Deep-seated gravitational slope deformations in western Sicily: Controlling factors, triggering mechanisms, and morphoevolutionary models
2014
Abstract A study of deep-seated gravitational slope deformation (DSGSD) phenomena affecting areas of various geological and geomorphological settings in western Sicily is described. Western Sicily is underlain by a thin-skinned imbricate wedge of Meso–Cenozoic carbonate and siliciclastic rocks that formed by the stacking of several thrust nappes over the Iblean foreland. Locally, the original thrust sheets are folded and cut by high-angle faults. Large areas of western Sicily now display high relief energy due to Plio-Pleistocene block-faulting and uplifting, and the Quaternary morphogenetic phases are characterised by incision, thereby triggering widespread DSGSDs. To identify controlling …
CONCEPTUAL DESIGN OF BOWSTRING BRIDGES WITH STRESS RIBBON TIE
2011
In this paper the conceptual design of tied-arch bridges is examined. A proposal for a particular kind of bowstring bridges, with an upper deck and a stress ribbon footbridge placed between the arch footings is discussed. The double structure allows to avoid horizontal forces into foundations when functional requirements lead to differentiate pedestrian and road traffic. After a general discussion about classical tied-arches, the main parameters involved in the design of the proposed solution are discussed and a case-study is presented.
A Ferrite Tubular Linear Motor (FTLM): Analysis and design
2015
The electromagnetic linear machines have wide applications in the electromagnetic aircraft launch systems [1] and in transportation systems [2]. Additional energy saving and efficiency can be achieved using a linear motor in the refrigeration application [3]. Linear electromagnetic machines are also very suitable for high-speed packaging, manufacturing sectors and precision positioning. There are different linear motor topologies. Tubular permanent-magnets are particularly attractive since they have a high thrust force density and high efficiency, no end windings, and zero net attractive force between stator and armature. There are various tubular motor topologies, in which the armature may…
Transition from thin- to thick-skinned tectonics and consequences for nappe formation: Numerical simulations and applications to the Helvetic nappe s…
2015
Abstract We use two-dimensional numerical simulations to study the deformation style and the formation of nappes during the shortening of basement–cover systems with half-grabens. We perform simulations with only linear and power-law viscous rheology, and also thermo-mechanical simulations with viscoelastoplastic rheology and temperature-dependent viscosities. The accumulated, area-averaged strain is calculated for the sediments, es, and for the basement, eb, to quantify the deformation style. The results show that the transition from thin-skinned dominated (es/eb > 1) to thick-skinned dominated (es/eb ≤ 1) deformation is controlled by two effective viscosity ratios: the ratio of viscosity …

Active tectonics, sedimentation history and geomorphological features in the northern Sicily continental margin: implications for the marine geohazar…
2020
Starting from the assumption that seismic events in the active margins are accompanied by evidence of a depositional, geomorphologic and structural type, which constitutes the geological record of their activity, we analysed different features of the Northern Sicily continental margin (NSCM) to reconstruct the deformational field and related stress field in the Southern Tyrrhenian sea. As an outcome of this project we were going to obtain seismotectonic setting and mapping to provide a powerful tool in managing and assessing the marine geological hazards. The study area extends from the San Vito Peninsula to the Termini Gulf along the NSCM, including the Ustica island, and is located in a t…
Solution-mass-transfer deformation adjacent to the Glarus Thrust, with implications for the tectonic evolution of the Alpine wedge in eastern Switzer…
2001
Abstract We have studied aspects of absolute finite strain of sandstones and the deformation history above and below the Glarus Thrust in eastern Switzerland. The dominant deformation mechanism is solution mass transfer (SMT), which resulted in the formation of a semi-penetrative cleavage. Our analysis indicates that the Verrucano and Melser sandstones, which lie above the thrust, were deformed coaxially, with pronounced contraction in a subvertical Z direction and minor extension in a subhorizontal X direction, trending at ∼200°. Most of the contraction in Z was balanced by mass-loss volume strains, averaging ∼36%. Below the Glarus Thrust, sandstones of the North Helvetic flysch have small…
