Metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb arthrodesis using intramedullary interlocking screws XMCP™

Abstract The study objective was to assess the results of a thumb metacarpophalangeal joint (MCPJ) arthrodesis using intramedullary interlocking screws at 25°, XMCP ™ (Extremity Medical, Parsippany, NJ). Radiographs evaluated the angle of arthrodesis, time of fusion and fixation of the implant. Clinical and functional outcomes were assessed using the DASH questionnaire and the VAS scale. Any complications found during surgery or the follow-up period were noted. We studied 9 patients. The mean follow-up was 27.6 months. Rubinstein–Taybi syndrome 2 with cerebellar abnormality and neural tube defect

Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RSTS) is a rare dominant disorder with intellectual disability, postnatal growth deficiency, and multiple congenital anomalies. Approximately 50-70% of the patients have a mutation in the CREBBP gene (RSTS1) and 5-10% display an EP300 gene mutation (RSTS2). Craniospinal abnormalities such as microcranium, scoliosis, and lordosis are frequent findings in RSTS1, but malformations of the brain or spinal cord are seen only occasionally. Efficacy of obidoxime in human organophosphorus poisoning: determination by neuromuscular transmission studies.

Six patients with organophosphorus compound intoxications developed an intermediate syndrome (weakness and fasciculations) and obidoxime was given on eight occasions. The efficacy of the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) reactivator was monitored electrophysiologically by neuromuscular transmission studies using single and repetitive nerve stimulation (20 and 50 Hz) and the activity of the serum (butyryl) cholinesterase (ChE). Dramatic electrophysiologic improvement was seen when obidoxime was given early within 12 h in 3 patients, although evidence of AChE inhibition did not subside completely. We describe for the first time the radial sesamoid or “false thumb” of the spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus), showing its great morphological similarities with that of the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) and the differences with that of the rest of the Ursidae. This points to the existence of a common origin for this structure in both species, but considering the accepted phylogenies of ursids, the sharing of a “false thumb” in T. ornatus and A. melanoleuca would be a plesiomorphy for these groups, whereas in the rest of the ursids the radial sesamoid was probably reduced, lacking the specialised function that this bone has in Tremarctinae and Ailuropodinae.

Abstract Following the interesting arguments raised in a recent letter to the editor, about a paper recently published in this journal, the authors are happy to take a cue from them to clarify some facts that have not been sufficiently treated for space. After a description of the methods used, arguments regarding a blunt trauma on the right shoulder with consequent dislocation, the position of the hands on the pubis with brachial plexus injury, and the wrist nailing that caused retracted thumbs are discussed in detail.

Fully automatic saliency-based subjects extraction in digital images

In this paper we present a novel saliency-based technique for the automatic extraction of relevant subjects in digital images. We use enhanced saliency maps to determine the most relevant parts of the images and an image cropping technique on the map itself to extract one or more relevant subjects. The contribution of the paper is two-fold as we propose a technique to enhance the standard GBVS saliency map and a technique to extract the most salient parts of the image. KERNEL ESTIMATION OF THE TRANSITION DENSITY IN BIFURCATING MARKOV CHAINS

We study the kernel estimator of the transition density of bifurcating Markov chains. Under some ergodic and regularity properties, we prove that this estimator is consistent and asymptotically normal. Next, in the numerical studies, we propose two data-driven methods to choose the bandwidth parameters. These methods are based on the so-called two bandwidths approach.
