This randomized, controlled, high-intensity strength and sprint training trial in middle-aged and older male sprint athletes showed significant improvements in mid-tibial structure and strength. The study reveals the adaptability of aging bone, suggesting that through a novel, intensive training stimulus it is possible to strengthen bones during aging. High-load, high-speed and impact-type exercise may be an efficient way of improving bone strength even in old age. International audience; We examined how motor responses to a stimulus evolve as individuals learn to predict when a stimulus will appear, by comparing responses to a regular versus irregular stimulus train. The study was conducted with two groups of adults — one responded to the regular appearance of a visual stimulus every 3 s (R group) and the second responded to the irregular presentation of the same stimulus (IR group) at intervals varying between 2 and 4 s. Purpose As result of the current demographic changes, osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures are becoming an increasing social and economic burden. In this experimental study, extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT), was evaluated as a treatment option for the improvement of osteoporotic fracture healing. Objectives To evaluate the effect of platelet-derived growth factor (rhPDGF-BB) on the promotion of osteogenesis around variable-thread tapered implants in an animal model. Material and methods Twenty-four variable-thread tapered implants were inserted in the tibia of 12 rabbits. Twelve sites received additional rhPDGF-BB released from a presoaked xenogenic bone block that was fixed supracrestally. The data presented in this article are related to the research paper entitled “Intensified mitophagy in skeletal muscle with aging is downregulated by PGC-1alpha overexpression in vivo” (Yeo et al., 2019). The data explained the surgical procedure of in vivo local transfection by electroporation method in aged mouse tibialis anterior muscle, and plasmid DNA preparation and verification protocol. The data also showed the transfection efficiency levels of GFP or GFP-tagged PGC-1alpha through immunohistochemistry method for frozen muscle cross-sections.

In vivo vibrational wave propagation in human tibiae at different ages

Vibrational wave propagation was tested in vivo on the tibial bone of both legs of 56 female volunteers. The impact was produced by a hammer with a force strain gauge and the response was monitored by two accelerometers. The peak amplitude of the accelerations, the velocity of the acceleration wave propagation and damping were analysed for comparison among the different age groups. The results showed significant negative correlations between age and the peak amplitude of acceleration, and the velocity of acceleration wave propagation (p less than 0.01).
