Does cutting back the public sector improve efficiency? Some evidence from 15 European countries
2013
The successful development of the welfare state that transpired for three decades after WWII in the developed countries, came to a halt around the end of the 1980s. Since then, the number of articles and books dedicated to the crisis of the welfare state has increased. We can now assert that at the turn of the century, almost all industrialized countries had cut at least “some” entitlements in their welfare program along with other expenditure items, and the trend continued in the first decade of this century. To defend the cuts and possibly to justify continuing cuts, several economic reasons, both theoretical and empirical, have been highlighted. From mention of Baumol’s disease to the fi…
How Does the Public Spending Affect Technical Efficiency? Some Evidence from 15 European Countries
2019
The relationship between government size and economic growth has been widely debated. Departing from this issue, we provide an empirical analysis of the impact of government size on technical efficiency. The aim of this paper is to estimate by using a True Random Effect model the impact of public sector’s size and of public expenditure components on 15 European countries’ technical efficiency from 1996 to 2011. Using the total public expenditure as a proxy for the government size we estimate simultaneously national optimal production function and technical efficiency model by controlling for income distribution and institutional quality. Our main findings show that the effect of public sect…
Productivity change of the Spanish Port System: impact of the economic crisis
2016
The main goal of this study was to assess the impact of the economic crisis on the productivity growth of the Spanish Port System (SPS). The Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) was estimated for the 28 Port Authorities of the SPS, for a 'non-crisis period' (2005-2008) and a 'crisis period' (2008-2011). From a policy perspective, the MPI is a very useful approach for assessing the productivity change because it can be decomposed into the catching-up index and the frontier productivity index. The results showed that the economic crisis did not impact all of the Spanish Port Authorities equally. Some Port Authorities presented higher productivity growth during the crisis period than in the non-…
Names for trace fossils: a uniform approach.
2006
The taxonomic treatment of trace fossils needs a uniform approach, independent of the ethologic groups concerned. To this aim, trace fossils are rigorously defined with regard to biological taxa and physical sedimentary structures. Potential ichnotaxobases are evaluated, with morphology resulting as the most important criterion. For trace fossils related to bioerosion and herbivory, substrate plays a key role, as well as composition for coprolites. Size, producer, age, facies and preservation are rejected as ichnotaxobases. Separate names for undertracks and other poorly preserved material should gradually be replaced by ichnotaxa based on well-preserved specimens. Recent traces may be iden…
Role of extension and compression in the evolution of the eastem margin of Iberia: the ESCI- València Trough seismic profile
1994
Carlos.Santisteban@uv.es The ESCI-València Trough deep seismic reflection profile crosses the eastern margin of Iberia and can be divided into three regions according to crustal structure. From NW to SE they are: a) the Ebro Basin, whit a 33 km thick continental crust wich remained almost undeformed during the Cenozoic and is very reflective in its lower part; b) the Continental Margin, made up of the Catalan-Valencian Domain and the Balearic Promontory with a thin (12 to 30 km thick) continental crust wich was deformed during the Cenozoic, extensional structures predominating the first domain and contractional structures in the second; and c) the Algerian Basin, with a 9 km thick oceanic c…
Late Quaternary nearshore molluscan patterns from Patagonia: Windows to southern southwestern Atlantic-Southern Ocean palaeoclimate and biodiversity …
2019
Varied approaches (palaeobiodiversity, palaeobiogeography, bioerosion, geochemistry) to unique Patagonian late Quaternary molluscan assemblages in the southwestern Atlantic, with ages especially from interglacial Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5e and MIS 1, provide large-scale and long-temporal palaeoenvironmental data for the southern SWA. Together with new patterns of δ18O and δ13C variations in modern, mid-Holocene, and Late to Middle Pleistocene shells of Protothaca antiqua (Bivalvia) and the coeval Pleistocene Tegula atra (Gastropoda), the overall sources of evidence illustrate possible responses to recent palaeoclimate and sea-ice changes around the southernmost SWA-western Antarctica, le…
Late Cenozoic brittle deformation in the Southern Patagonian Andes: Record of plate coupling/decoupling during variable subduction?
2018
The Andes of southern Patagonia experienced a Miocene shift towards faster and higher angle subduction followed by the approach and collision of the Chile oceanic ridge. We present a kinematic study characterizing palaeostress fields computed from brittle tectonics to better constrain upper crustal deformation during this complex scenario. Although previous studies already suggested variable kinematics, it is striking that in a long-lasting subduction environment, the computed palaeostress tensors are mostly strike-slip (55%), while 35% are extensional, and only 10% compressive which are concentrated along a main frontal thrust. Cross-cutting relationships and synsedimentary deformation ind…
