Host’s genetic background determines the outcome of reciprocal faecal transplantation on life-history traits and microbiome composition
2022
Abstract Background Microbes play a role in their host's fundamental ecological, chemical, and physiological processes. Host life-history traits from defence to growth are therefore determined not only by the abiotic environment and genotype but also by microbiota composition. However, the relative importance and interactive effects of these factors may vary between organisms. Such connections remain particularly elusive in Lepidoptera, which have been argued to lack a permanent microbiome and have microbiota primarily determined by their diet and environment. We tested the microbiome specificity and its influence on life-history traits of two colour genotypes of the wood tiger moth (Arctia…
Tiger King and the Exegesis of COVID-19 Media Coverage of Nonhuman Animals
2022
Beginning with the premise that the media participates in the manufacturing of the societal consent that enables and perpetuates the systematized exploitation of nonhuman animals, this article explores how media coverage of such nonhuman animals (and of wildlife in particular) during the COVID-19 crisis may influence our consumption of popular entertainment in a way that centralizes the discussion on the implications of established speciesist practices. I specifically focus on the impact of the first season of Netflix’s successful docuseries Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness, directed by Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin, which was released in March 2020, a key moment in the world…
A survey of pathology specimens associated with impacted teeth over a 21-year period
2019
Background To compare the histologic diagnosis of lesions associated with impacted teeth from a South African population with literature data. Material and Methods A retrospective cross-sectional survey of tissue specimens associated with impacted teeth that were analyzed in the Department of Oral Pathology (University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa) between 1996 and 2016. Patient age, gender, impacted tooth location and the histologic diagnosis were recorded for statistical analysis. Results Odontogenic pathology was diagnosed in 389 (95.6%) specimens while dental follicle comprised 4.4% of tissue submissions. The mean age was 25.3 ±15.2 years with a male predilection (M:F=1.8:1). The …
Prevalence and distribution of odontogenic cysts in Sicily: 1986-2005.
2008
The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of odontogenic cysts (OCs) in Sicily and evaluate their distribution during a 20-year period. A cross-sectional retrospective study was carried out in 1,310 cysts of the jaw diagnosed in 12,197 individuals, who consecutively attended the Odontostomatologic Clinic of Palermo from 1986 to 2005. 1,273 cysts were classified as odontogenic, whereas only 37 were non-odontogenic. In the former group, the most frequent lesions were radicular cysts (84.5%), followed by dentigerous OCs (11.4%). Inflammatory radicular cysts were observed more in male gender, younger age at diagnosis and anterior maxilla as site of presentation. Unlike dentigerou…

Recovering Surface Temperature and Emissivity from Thermal Infrared Multispectral Data
1998
Abstract In 1992 Thermal Infrared Multispectral Scanner (TIMS) data were acquired from the NASA C-130 aircraft over the Sahelian region of West Africa as part of the Hydrological and Atmospheric Pilot Experiment in the Sahel (HAPEX). TIMS measures the radiation from the surface modified by the atmosphere in six channels located between 8 mm and 12.5 μm in the thermal infrared. By using a variety of techniques it is possible to extract both the surface temperature and surface emissivity from the areas over which TIMS data were acquired. One such technique was tested with the data acquired during this experiment. Several TIMS images of both the east and west central sites on 2 and 4 September…
Planktonic foraminifera in ODP Hole 160-963A
2006
New faunal and floral records from Ocean Drilling Project Hole 963A, resolved at ?80-year spacing, provide evidence of suborbital scale climate variability in the central Mediterranean Sea throughout Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5. Cold events in the central Mediterranean Sea, indicated by low abundances of warm species and high abundances of cold species, are also evident in a planktonic foraminifera paleoclimatic curve. They have been linked to NGRIP Greenland ice core “C” events and appear correlative with similar sub-millennial climate fluctuations identified in the North Atlantic region and in the Alboran Basin (Westernmost Mediterranean). Low-resolution benthic and planktonic Oxygen Iso…
Nemastoma bidentatum (Arachnida: Opiliones: Nemastomatidae): neu für Deutschland und die Tschechische Republik
2007
Nemastoma bidentatum (Arachnida: Opiliones: Nemastomatidae): first records for Germany and the Czech Republic. N. bidentatum Roewer, 1914 was found at two places in Germany: first on the island "Harriersand" in the Weser river (Lower Saxony), second on the banks of the river Elbe in the Elbsandsteingebirge (Saxony). Adjacent to the latter locality an occurrence in the Czech Republic could be located close to the German/Czech border in the floodplain of the river Elbe as well. These records are the first for Germany and the Czech Republic. They enlarge the distribution area of N. bidentatum remarkably in both a northern and a western direction. The two populations show conspicuous difference…
Prevalence and distribution of odontogenic cysts in a Mexican sample. A 753 cases study
2016
Background Odontogenic cysts (OC) are the most frequent lesions of the jaws and their constant epidemiological update is necessary and indispensable. Therefore the principal objective of this report was To determine prevalence and clinical-demographical characteristics of OC in a Mexican sample. Material and Methods 753 cases of OC coming from the archive of a head and neck histopathological teaching service, from January 2000 to December 2013, were included. OC cases were re-assessed according 2005 WHO classification. Chi square test was used to establish possible associations (p<0.05IC95%). Results From 753 OC, 369 were female and 384 male; 52.9% of them were in their 2nd- 4th decade of l…
Primordial odontogenic tumor with prominent calcifications: a rare case report
2019
Primordial odontogenic tumor (POT) is a rare odontogenic tumor. It is a new entity in the latest edition of the World Health Organization classification in 2017. In the English-language literature, only 14 cases have been documented. Most POTs show a well-defined unilocular radiolucency surrounding a crown of an unerupted molar, resembling a dentigerous cyst. Microscopically, POT may be difficult to distinguish from odontogenic myxoma, ameloblastic fibroma, hyperplastic dental follicle and dental papilla. Here, we reported a case of POT in a 17-year old female presenting with an asymptomatic bony hard swelling at the left posterior mandible. Interestingly, this case shows unique radiographi…
