Oxidative stress in young subjects with acute myocardial infarction: evaluation at the initial stage and after 12 months.

2007

In 105 subjects (97 men and 8 women) aged <46 years (mean age 39.6 ± 5.5 years), with recent acute myocardial infarction (T1), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and total antioxidant status were determined; NO production was evaluated by measuring the nitrite and nitrate (NOx) concentration. The patients with acute myocardial infarction were subdivided according to the main risk factors, number of risk factors, and extent of coronary lesions. The evaluation was repeated after 12 months (T2). In these subjects, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and NOx were significantly increased and total antioxidant status was significantly decreased at T1. In single risk factor, only NO m…

Fatty replacement of bone marrow after radiation therapy for Hodgkin disease: Quantification with chemical shift imaging

1993

The authors studied the long-term fatty replacement of bone marrow in 23 patients who had received radiation therapy for Hodgkin disease, with T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and quantitative chemical shift imaging. T1-weighted images revealed a mostly homogeneous high-signal-intensity pattern, in contrast to the hypointense pattern of nonirradiated marrow. The degree of fatty replacement was objectively assessed with chemical shift imaging, comparing patients to age-matched healthy volunteers. The authors found an increase in relative fat signal of 37% in the thoracic spine and 34% in the lumbar spine. The relative fat signal of nonirradiated pelvic and femoral marrow was decreased …

Addition of rituximab to standard therapy improves response rate and progression-free survival in relapsed or refractory thrombotic thrombocytopenic …

2007

SummaryTreatment of relapsed or refractory autoimmune mediated haemolytic syndromes, such as autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), represents a therapeutic challenge. Here we report on our experience with the monoclonal anti-CD20 antibody rituximab (R) compared to standard treatment in these diseases. Patients with non-familialTTP orAIHA and no underlying malignancy were included in our analysis. Safety and efficacy of R-treatment were compared to results obtained in standard treatment approaches. Altogether, 27 patients were analyzed, comprising 15 patients withTTP and 12 patients with AIHA. The patients’ average age at the time of diagnosis wa…

Long-Term Effects of the Substituted Benzamide Derivative Amisulpride on Baseline and Stimulated Prolactin Levels

2002

In the present study, we investigated the long-term effects of treatment with amisulpride, a substituted benzamide derivative, as compared with the effects of treatment with flupenthixol, a thioxanthene, on the prolactin levels in schizophrenic patients. After completing 6 weeks of medication with either amisulpride or flupenthixol, the patients entered a long-term maintenance treatment with amisulpride 200–600 mg/day or flupenthixol 5–15 mg/day for a maximum of 12 months with a subsequent drug-free follow-up until month 15. Eighteen initially included patients were still participating in the study at month 6. In the flupenthixol group, only 1 patient treated reached month 12, and none of t…

The time course of temporal discrimination: An ERP study

2009

Objective: The question of how temporal information is processed by the brain is still a matter of debate. This study aimed to elucidate the brain electrical activity associated with a visual temporal discrimination task. Methods: For this purpose, 44 participants were required to compare pairs of sequentially presented time intervals: a fixed standard interval (1000 ms), and an equal-to-standard, longer (1200 ms) or shorter (800 ms) comparison interval. Behavioural data and event-related potentials (ERPs) were analyzed. Results: Long intervals were more rapidly identified than short intervals. The amplitude of the contingent negative variation (CNV) found at frontocentral sites before the …

Chronic graft-versus-host disease: long-term results from a randomized trial on graft-versus-host disease prophylaxis with or without anti-T-cell glo…

2011

Abstract Previous randomized graft-versus-host disease (GVHD)-prophylaxis trials have failed to demonstrate reduced incidence and severity of chronic GVHD (cGVHD). Here we reanalyzed and updated a randomized phase 3 trial comparing standard GVHD prophylaxis with or without pretransplantation ATG-Fresenius (ATG-F) in 201 adult patients receiving myeloablative conditioning before transplantation from unrelated donors. The cumulative incidence of extensive cGVHD after 3 years was 12.2% in the ATG-F group versus 45.0% in the control group (P < .0001). The 3-year cumulative incidence of relapse and of nonrelapse mortality was 32.6% and 19.4% in the ATG-F group and 28.2% and 33.5% in the contr…

Adalimumab efficacy in enteropathic spondyloarthritis: A 12-mo observational multidisciplinary study

2017

AIM To report adalimumab (Ada) efficacy on articular-gastrointestinal disease and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with enteropathic spondyloarthritis (ES). METHODS A cohort of 52 patients with ES was evaluated in the departments of gastroenterology and internal medicine. At baseline, all patients underwent assessment by an integrated gastro-rheumatologic evaluation of articular and gastrointestinal activity, as well patient reported outcomes (PROs) of the HRQoL questionnaires. After this integrated evaluation and following a specific working flowchart, the Ada anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-inhibitor was assigned to a cohort of 30 patients and its clinical efficacy was …

Total polyphenol intake, polyphenol subtypes and incidence of cardiovascular disease: The SUN cohort study.

2018

Abstract Background and aims Polyphenol-rich diets have been associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, few prospective epidemiological studies have examined the relationship between classes of ingested polyphenols and risk of CVD. Our aim was to evaluate the association between polyphenol intake and risk of major cardiovascular events in a prospective Spanish cohort. Methods and results We included 17,065 university graduates (60.7% women, mean age: 37.2 years, age range: 20–89) followed-up for a mean of 10.1 years. Polyphenol intake was assessed at baseline using a validated semi-quantitative 136-item food frequency questionnaire and matching food consumption d…

Simplified Orthotopic Ileocecal Pouch (Mainz Pouch) for Bladder Substitution

2003

Objective To report operative modifications that render construction of the orthotopic Mainz pouch more simple, namely formation of the pouch using absorbable staples and utilization of the ileocecal valve as an antireflux mechanism. Patients and methods Between January 2001 and May 2002 out of 92 cystectomy cases, 21 patients (20 males and 1 female) underwent a simplified orthotopic Mainz pouch. The ureters were implanted via Wallace or Nesbit technique in the supravalvular portion of the ileocecal valve. The mean (range) age was 58 (43 - 74) years and the mean follow-up is 11.6 months (range 1 - 27). Results No staple-related complications were encountered. Four renal units (8.8 %) were d…
