Urinary luteinizing hormone (LH) testing has been proposed as a reliable method for the prediction of ovulation but its accuracy has been challenged by some studies. To check how accurately the oscillations of urinary LH reflected the plasma changes, surges of LH of different magnitude and duration were artificially induced in plasma and the hormone was measured simultaneously in urine. Methods: Self-rated weight loss, eating behaviors, and general psychopathology were assessed several months before treatment, when subjects were admitted, at discharge, and at the 6-, 12-, and 18-month follow-ups. In 6 of 7 acromegalic patients a single subcutaneous injection of 50 micrograms of a new octapeptide somatostatin analogue (SMS 201-995) reduced serum growth hormone (GH) from 30 +/- 12 ng/ml to 1.4 +/- 0.4 (mean +/- SEM). Serum GH remained below basal concentration for 9 h. In the remaining patient who had very high basal preprandial serum GH, SMS 201-995 produced a reduction in serum GH of only 20%. Plasma glucose concentrations were increased to the upper limits of the normal range when a high-carbohydrate meal was consumed 2 h after injection. In this paper, we present an online coupling of gel electrophoresis (GE) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the determination of iodine species (iodide and iodate) in liquid (seawater) and aerosol samples. For the first time, this approach is applied to the analysis of small molecules, and initial systematic investigations revealed that the migration behavior as well as the detection sensitivity strongly depends on the matrix (e.g., high concentrations of chloride). Open mini-invasive cholecystectomy in high risk elderly. A review of 121 consecutive procedures.

INTRODUCTION: the report describes the features of a low cost, open mini-invasive procedure for cholecystectomy in a sample of 121 consecutive high risk elderly (ASA score 3 to 5). PATIENTS AND METHODS: the surgery is performed through a 3 - 4 cm right subcostal skin incision. An optimal exposition of the operating field was achieved thanks to an innovative three valve retractor. RESULTS: a mean hospital stay of 3,02 days, low complication rate and 2,4% mortality are the results of the described procedure.
