Impact of viewing distance on relative depth judgements for stimuli in physical space

2019

In natural viewing, numerous depth cues are available to the visual system, but their significance varies considerably depending on the viewing distance. How is it reflected in the outcome of depth judgements? We have designed a psychophysical experiment with a limited number of depth cues to examine distance-related changes in the correct response rate and time. Twenty young adults evaluated relative depth of stimuli in physical space. Each time four constant angular size achromatic stimuli were presented on a volumetric multi-planar display. One of these stimuli was demonstrated closer to the observer comparing to others. The experiment followed the four-interval forced-choice procedure. …

Modeling solid waste decomposition.

2004

The hydrolysis rate coefficients of sorted municipal waste were evaluated from the biochemical methane potential tests using non-linear regression. A distributed mathematical model of anaerobic digestion of rich (food) and lean (non-food) solid wastes with greatly different rates of polymer hydrolysis/acidogenesis was developed to describe the balance between the rates of hydrolysis/acidogenesis and methanogenesis. The model was calibrated using previously published experimental data [Biores. Technol. 52 (1995) 245] obtained upon various initial food waste loadings. Simulations of one- and two-stage digestion systems were carried out. The results showed that initial spatial separation of fo…

Rapid, cost-effective, sensitive and quantitative detection of Acinetobacter baumannii from pneumonia patients

2011

Background and Objectives: Pneumonia with Acinetobacter baumannii has a major therapeutic problem in health care settings. Decision to initiate correct antibiotic therapy requires rapid identification and quantification of organism. The aim of this study was to develop a rapid and sensitive method for direct detection of A. baumannii from respiratory specimens. Materials and Methods: A Taqman real time PCR based on the sequence of blaoxa-51 was designed and used for direct detection of A. baumannii from 361 respiratory specimens of patients with pneumonia. All specimens were checked by conventional bacteriology in parallel. Results: The new real time PCR could detect less than 200 cfu per m…

Reflexionsakustische Lagebestimmung von Trachealkanülen

1997

Non-invasive acoustic airway monitoring was evaluated in an experimental study. Recording amplitude and travel time of acoustic pulse response, an area-distance function of the cross sectional dimensions of the endotracheal tube and the adjacent airway was calculated to obtain an acoustic pattern of the airway. Measurements on models and excised human cadaver lungs were performed to discover whether displacement or obstruction of the artificial airway can be detected in the acoustic equivalent. Regression analysis revealed a close correlation between displacement of tracheostomy tubes and the shifting of the acoustic area-distance function (corr. coeff. 0.97-1). Dispersion analysis confirme…

A SYMMETRIC AND POSITIVE DEFINITE BEM FOR 2-D FORCED VIBRATIONS

1997

A BEM formulation for 2D elastodynamics in the time domain has been presented. The formulation gives a resolving system that involves boundary displacements only. The stiffness and mass matrices of the boundary discretized body are frequency independent, symmetric and positive definite

Acoustic monitoring of the artificial airway — experimental results

1997

Non-invasive acoustic airway-monitoring was evaluated in an experimental study. Recording amplitude and travel time of acoustic pulse response, an acoustic pattern of airway's geometry was then calculated. Measurements on models and excised human cadaver lungs were performed to discover whether displacement or obstruction of the artificial airway could be detected by its acoustic equivalent. Regression analysis revealed a close correlation between displacement of tracheostomy tubes and the shifting of the acoustic area-distance function (corr. coeff.: 0.97-1) and an adequate correlation between acoustic and planimetrical determination of cross-sectional area within the tubes (corr. coeff.: …

An Augmented Reality System for the Treatment of Acrophobia: The Sense of Presence Using Immersive Photography

2006

This paper describes an augmented reality (AR) system for the treatment of acrophobia. First, the technical characteristics of the original prototype are described. Second, the capacity of the immersive photography used in the AR system to provoke sense of presence in users is tested. Forty-one participants without fear of heights walked around a staircase in both a real environment and an immersive photography environment. Immediately after their experience, participants were given the SUS questionnaire to assess their subjective sense of presence. The users' scores in the immersive photography were very high. Results indicate that the acrophobic context can be useful for the treatment of…

Root uptake, storage and remobilisation of autumn applied nitrogen to kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) vines

2000
