“Houses for One Euro” and the Territory. Some Estimation Issues for the “Geographic Debt” Reduction

2020

The phenomenon of the “houses for one Euro” is the epitome of the progressive and increasing abandonment of the inland territories in which many small towns are affected by continuous and unstoppable depopulation. This process, mostly affecting the southern and insular Italian regions, have been triggered by the quick industrial development started after the second post-war, led by the northern regions, that deeply and irreversibly modified the anthropography of the whole country until now. The impoverishment of a wide part of the Italian territory, is one of the many issues connected to the social-territorial justice that is the original topic by which appraisal and valuation, that is scie…

Selective oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane over MoVSbO mixed oxide catalysts

2006

Abstract Mo–V–Sb–O mixed metal oxides were prepared, characterized and tested for the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODH). These catalysts are active and selective in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane to ethylene, although their catalytic performance depends strongly on the calcination temperature. The best catalytic results were obtained on samples heat-treated at 600 °C in N 2 (with selectivities to ethylene higher than 80% at ethane conversions about 65%). Moreover, a loss in the catalyst activity is initially observed on these catalysts as a consequence of modifications in the nature of the crystalline phases. Changes on the oxidation state of antimony ions on the surface of…

Las perturbaciones mentales en el corpus hippocraticum. El concepto "manía"

1991

LA MEDICINA HIPOCRATICA MUESTRA GRAN INTERES POR LOS ESTADOS PATOLOGICOS DE LA MENTE. EL CORPUS HIPPOCRATICUM UTILIZA UNA AMPLIA GAMA DE LOCUCIONES PARA EXPRESAR LOS TRASTORNOS MENTALES, TANTO LOS DE CARACTER TRANSITORIO COMO LOS PERMANENTES O CRONICOS. EN GENERAL, LOS AUTORES CONTINUAN APLICANDO TERMINOS USADOS YA EN LA TRAGEDIA GRIEGA, AUNQUE APORTAN LA ORIGINALIDAD DE LA CREACION DE ALGUNOS NEOLOGISMOS, COMO EL TERMINO "FRENITIS", CON UN SENTIDO ESPECIFICO MEDICO. ENTRE LOS TERMINOS EMPLEADOS DESTACAN LAS LOCUCIONES QUE SE RELACIONAN CON LA RAIZ INDOEUROPEA MEN-, "PENSAR", TALES COMO MANIA Y MAINOMAI. EL SENTIDO DE MANIA ES EL QUE YA APARECE A PARTIR DEL SIGLO V A.C. EN LA TRAGEDIA GRIEG…

Depositional environment and biofacies characterisation of the Triassic (Carnian to Rhaetian) carbonate succession of Punta Bassano (Marettimo Island…

2007

AThe aims of this study are to reconstruct the geological setting of the Punta Bassano series (Marettimo Island, Egadi Archipelago, western Sicily) and its palaeogeographic evolution. The reference section for the Upper Triassic of Marettimo shows an alternation of marl and limestone beds together with brecciated levels. The limestones are both homogeneous mudstones with evaporite pseudomorphs and laminated with fenestrae. Foraminiferal, palynomorph, and ostracod associations constrain the Punta Bassano sequence to the Carnian-Rhaetian interval. The Punta Bassano succession represents a shallow inner ramp, ranging from open-marine environment with good water circulation to lagoonal and peri…

A Multimodal Guide for Virtual 3D Models of Cultural Heritage Artifacts

2008

The area of cultural heritage preservation and fruition has drawn an ever growing attention of artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction research in the last decades. The common aim is to develop systems that can interact with the user in a variety of modes and in the most natural way. In this paper, a multimodal guide for virtual 3D environment navigation is presented. The proposed system integrates X3D environment with a multimodal interface. The application scenario is to provide a visitor assistance and guidance during the visit of one of the halls in the historical Palazzo Steri, the headquarters of the University of Palermo.

Estimation of causal effects with small data in the presence of trapdoor variables

2021

We consider the problem of estimating causal effects of interventions from observational data when well-known back-door and front-door adjustments are not applicable. We show that when an identifiable causal effect is subject to an implicit functional constraint that is not deducible from conditional independence relations, the estimator of the causal effect can exhibit bias in small samples. This bias is related to variables that we call trapdoor variables. We use simulated data to study different strategies to account for trapdoor variables and suggest how the related trapdoor bias might be minimized. The importance of trapdoor variables in causal effect estimation is illustrated with rea…

Asymptotic and bootstrap tests for subspace dimension

2022

Most linear dimension reduction methods proposed in the literature can be formulated using an appropriate pair of scatter matrices, see e.g. Ye and Weiss (2003), Tyler et al. (2009), Bura and Yang (2011), Liski et al. (2014) and Luo and Li (2016). The eigen-decomposition of one scatter matrix with respect to another is then often used to determine the dimension of the signal subspace and to separate signal and noise parts of the data. Three popular dimension reduction methods, namely principal component analysis (PCA), fourth order blind identification (FOBI) and sliced inverse regression (SIR) are considered in detail and the first two moments of subsets of the eigenvalues are used to test…

Numerical study on localized defect modes in two-dimensional lattices: a high Q-resonant cavity

2003

Abstract The spectral widths and the quality factors of defect modes localized for different defects structures formed in a 2D photonic crystal composed of a square lattice of circular rods of indium antimonide (InSb) are theoretically investigated. It is first shown that some factors such as the lattice nature, the line defect orientation, the nature and the defect width have a significant influence on the optical properties of the studied structures and can improve the Q factor and defect peak transmission intensity. Particularly, the transmission spectra of the defects calculated by means the transfer-matrix-method for a particular structure of eight line defects introduced in its center…

Social media as a strategic marketing tool in the Sicilian wine industry: Evidence from Facebook

2017

Abstract Over the last few years, many companies have integrated social media, and social networking sites in particular, into their communication and media plan, leading to a deep transformation of the organizational models and changing the companies׳ marketing dynamics. This study has dual aims: first, to recognize and validate the firm׳s social media (SM) efforts in its use of the Facebook platform; second, to examine the relationships among the firm׳s SM efforts and some firm and managerial characteristics. In order to achieve these research aims, data on 45 wineries were collected and analysed, using a model that considers three different dimensions of the firms׳ activity on the social…
