Dermatophytosis is a superficial fungal infection of keratinized tissues. Dermatophytes can cause discomfort but are not usually life threatening. However, the infection can spread and may lead to systemic fungal infections in immunocompromised patients. Currently available diagnostic methods include potassium hydroxide (KOH) testing and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining. However, most diagnostic techniques cannot be performed rapidly; days to weeks may be required for conclusive results. German randomized double-blind multicentre comparison of terbinafine and itraconazole for the treatment of toenail tinea infection

Summary One–hundred and ninety–five patients with toenail tinea unguium were recruited to a multicentre double–blind clinical trial. Patients were given 250mg terbinafine or 200 mg itraconazole daily for 12 weeks, with follow–up for a further 40 weeks. At the end of the study, mycological cure rates were 81% (70/86 assessed) for terbinafine and 63% (53/84 assessed) for itraconazole (two–tailed, P < 0·05). The length of unaffected nail was 9·44 mm in the terbinafine group and 7·85 mm in the itraconazole group (two–tailed, P < 0·05). Zusammenfassung: In zwei Dorfern des Gogol Valley (Papua-Neuguinea) wurden satliche 47 an Tinea imbricata erkrankten Personen erfas, wovon 39 einer Griseofuhin®- bzw. Mycan-den®-Therapie oder Kombination zugefuhrt wurden. Die Zuweisung zu den unterschiedlichen Behandlungsgruppen erfolgte anhand des Alters und des prozentualen Befalls der Korperoberflache. Die Therapiedauer betrug maximal 4 Wochen, der Beobachtungszeitraum insgesamt 6 Wochen. Eine Remission des Hautbefalls erfolgte fur beide Therapeutika von der 2. Behand-lungswoche an. The aim of this thesis is to examine and interpret the sophisticated composition of Rodrigo Fresán’s “house of books” or “intertextual series”. Our research will demonstrate that the nine books of the Argentinean writer, in spite of their different generic classifications and their significant thematic diversity, form a coherent whole and they cannot be therefore analyzed separately. The continuity, the logic and, most importantly, the systematic nature of this literary project, that unites all the books of the author in an original and fractal intertextual series “in progress”, will be showed. The Parasitic Colonization of the Horny Layer in Tinea Versicolor

Observations of vertical sections and of tape strippings of areas infested with tinea versicolor indicate that because of their dimorphic state, these parasites can colonize the horny layer. Mycelial hyphae progress downwards into the intercellular spaces of the horny cells where they feed on nonkeratinous substances and extrude proliferating yeast cells which form clusters in nest-like cavities. The yeast-mycelial conversion gives rise to new mycelial hyphae and the cycle is complete. The parasites are actually lodged in tunnels and nests hollowed out in the horny layer. AIM This study evaluated the prevalence of infectious diseases and immunisation status of children adopted from Africa. METHODS We studied 762 African children referred to 11 Italian paediatric centres in 2009-2015. Clinical and laboratory data were retrospectively collected and analysed. RESULTS The median age of the children (60.3% males) was 3 years and 6 months, 52.6% came from Ethiopia and 50.1% had at least one infectious disease.
