Unravelling the heterogeneity of soft tissue and bone sarcoma patients’ health-related quality of life: a systematic literature review with focus on …

2020

Contains fulltext : 229532.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Patients with sarcoma experience many physical and psychological symptoms, adversely affecting their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). HRQoL assessment is challenging due to the diversity of the disease. This review aims to unravel the heterogeneity of HRQoL of patients with sarcoma with regard to tumour location and to summarise the used measures in research. English-language literature from four databases published between January 2000 and April 2019 was reviewed. Studies that described adult sarcoma HRQoL outcomes were included and classified according to primary sarcoma location. Eighty-seven articles met the incl…

Nonpegylated Liposomal Doxorubicin (TLC-D99), Paclitaxel, and Trastuzumab in HER-2-Overexpressing Breast Cancer: A Multicenter Phase I/II Study

2008

Abstract Purpose: To determine the recommended dose, cardiac safety, and antitumor activity of nonpegylated liposomal doxorubicin (TLC-D99), paclitaxel, and the anti-HER-2 monoclonal antibody trastuzumab in patients with HER-2-overexpressing locally advanced nonoperable breast cancer (LABC) and metastatic breast cancer (MBC). Experimental Design: Women with measurable, previously untreated, HER-2-overexpressing LABC and MBC with a baseline left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) >50% received weekly trastuzumab in combination with escalating doses of weekly paclitaxel and TLC-D99 every 3 weeks for 6 cycles. LVEF monitoring was done every 3 weeks for the first 18 weeks and every 8 w…

Treatment and outcomes of patients in the Brain Metastases in Breast Cancer Network Registry

2018

Brain metastases (BMs) have a major impact on life expectancy and quality of life for many breast cancer patients. Knowledge about treatment patterns and outcomes is limited. We analysed clinical data of 1712 patients diagnosed with BMs from breast cancer between January 2000 and December 2016 at 80 institutions.Median age at diagnosis of BMs was 56 years (22-90 years). About 47.8% (n = 732) of patients had HER2-positive, 21.4% (n = 328) had triple-negative and 30.8% (n = 471) had hormone receptor (HR)-positive, HER2-negative (luminal-like) primary tumours. The proportion of patients with HER2-positive BMs decreased comparing the years 2000-2009 with 2010-2015 (51%-44%), whereas the percenta…

Cryopreservation and autotransplantation of human ovarian tissue prior to cytotoxic therapy – A technique in its infancy but already successful in fe…

2008

Increasing survival rates in young cancer patients, new reproductive techniques and the growing interest in quality of life after gonadotoxic cancer therapies have placed fertility preservation as an important issue to oncologists, fertility specialists and patients. Several techniques are now available for fertility preservation in these patients. A new promising method is cryopreservation and transplantation of ovarian cortex. Ovarian tissue can be extracted by laparoscopy without any significant delay of gonadotoxic therapy. The tissue can be cryopreserved by specialised centres of reproductive medicine and transplanted in case the women experience premature ovarian failure (POF). This r…

Mesenchymal stromal cells and rheumatic diseases: new tools from pathogenesis to regenerative therapies

2015

In recent years, mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been largely investigated and tested as a new therapeutic tool for several clinical applications, including the treatment of different rheumatic diseases. MSCs are responsible for the normal turnover and maintenance of adult mesenchymal tissues as the result of their multipotent differentiation abilities and their secretion of a variety of cytokines and growth factors. Although initially derived from bone marrow, MSCs are present in many different tissues such as many peri-articular tissues. MSCs may exert immune-modulatory properties, modulating different immune cells in both in vitro and in vivo models, and they are considered immune-…

Survival After Transplantation of Corneas From a Rabies-Infected Donor

2011

To examine the tissue samples of 2 corneal recipients from a rabies-infected donor for the presence of rabies to explain their survival.Interventional case series with a review of the literature. The explanted corneal donor buttons were examined via nested reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. The patients were followed up ophthalmologically and neurologically. Antirabies antibodies were measured in blood samples, and skin biopsies were examined by direct fluorescent antibody staining. Two patients received corneas from the same multiorgan donor. Six weeks after transplantation, 3 of the donor's organ recipients became symptomatic and rabies virus was confirmed in tissue from the …

Efficacy of leukotriene receptor antagonist in chronic urticaria. A double-blind, placebo-controlled comparison of treatment with montelukast and cet…

2001

Background The cause and pathogenesis of chronic urticaria are still poorly understood. IgE-independent reactions, are common in adult patients with chronic urticaria, who have daily spontaneous occurrence of weals. H1-receptor antagonists (antihistamines) are the major class of therapeutic agents used in the management of urticaria and angioedema. Nevertheless, chronic urticaria is often difficult to treat and may not be controlled by antihistamines alone. It has been postulated that mediators other than histamine, such as kinins, prostaglandin and leukotrienes, may be responsible for some of the symptoms in urticaria which are not controlled by antihistamines. In this study, which was ran…

Humoral immunity and retrobulbar fibroblasts in endocrine ophthalmopathy

1992

The exact role of retrobulbar fibroblasts in the immunopathogenesis of endocrine ophthalmopathy still remains to be elucidated. To evaluate the in vitro influence of humoral immunity on retrobulbar fibroblasts, the effects of immunoglobulin G as well as of the sera of 50 euthyroid patients with endocrine ophthalmopathy and 30 controls on both porcine and human (patients' and controls') retrobulbar fibroblasts were measured by means of several assays: a colorimetric test involving a heterocyclic chemical, a tetrazolium bromide, was applied to quantify the activity of mitochondrial dehydrogenases; the incorporation of 3H-thymidine was determined as a sensitive parameter for cell proliferation…

Vertical Mandibular Alveolar Bone Distraction and Dental Implant Placement: A Case Report

2006

Abstract Extensive bone defects complicate the adequate placement of dental implants and the required angulation. In such cases, alveolar-ridge augmentation techniques such as guided bone regeneration, particulate or block grafting, and alveolar bone distraction are needed. The present study describes a case in which a large vertical bone defect in the anterior mandibular zone was corrected via vertical alveolar bone distraction. Six dental implants were posteriorly placed for implant-supported restoration of the mandible, with early implant loading. The clinical and radiologic control showed good implant and soft tissue conditions 12 months later.

Human pathology in NCL

2013

AbstractIn childhood the neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCL) are the most frequent lysosomal diseases and the most frequent neurodegenerative diseases but, in adulthood, they represent a small fraction among the neurodegenerative diseases. Their morphology is marked by: (i) loss of neurons, foremost in the cerebral and cerebellar cortices resulting in cerebral and cerebellar atrophy; (ii) an almost ubiquitous accumulation of lipopigments in nerve cells, but also in extracerebral tissues. Loss of cortical neurons is selective, indiscriminate depletion in early childhood forms occurring only at an advanced stage, whereas loss of neurons in subcortical grey-matter regions has not been quantit…
