Distribution of oxygen partial pressure in a two-dimensional tissue supplied by capillary meshes and concurrent and countercurrent systems

1969

Abstract For the calculations of oxygen partial pressure in a two-dimensional tissue model supplied by a capillary network (inhomogeneously perfused tissue), two differential equations are given that describe the process in the tissue and capillaries. The differential equations are coupled by the boundary conditions. Results obtained by using the method of successive displacements are given for the two-dimensional problem. This method exhibits a satisfactory convergence. The accuracy of the results is about ±5% based on the initial concentration. The results for the network model are compared with those for equivalent concurrent and countercurrent systems. Equivalence means in this connecti…

Peripheral T-cell lymphoma classification: the matter of cellular derivation.

2011

Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) represent approximately 12% of all non-Hodgkin's lymphomas in Western countries. They are quite heterogeneous as far as morphology and phenotype are concerned. Furthermore, until now, PTCLs could not be referred to specific normal counterparts, in contrast to B-cell-derived non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. In particular, in the last edition of the WHO classification of Tumors of the Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues, for the majority of nodal PTCLs (including the not otherwise specified type and anaplastic large-cell lymphoma), the postulated cell of origin remained undefined. However, in the last few years, high-throughput genomic techniques, especially gene-ex…

TCR V alpha chain expression influences reactivity to the hapten TNP.

1997

We have recently demonstrated a remarkable selection of in vitro cultivated, TNP-specific polyclonal T cell lines for the expression of a TCR beta chain encoded by the V beta 8.2 gene. The goal of the present study was to analyse V alpha usage in V beta 8.2 T cells responsive to TNP, using TNP-specific T cell lines derived from three common strains of mice, as well as from V beta 8.2 transgenic mice. Results indicate that in vitro TNP stimulation of T cells from TNP-immune mice results in significant skewing of V alpha usage among responding V beta 8.2+ T cells, with overexpression observed for V alpha 3.2 and V alpha 8. These results indicate that V alpha expression influences recognition …

Interventistica eco-guidata per l’articolazione d’anca

2013

The purpose of this work is to review the main applications of ultrasound-guided hip intervention al procedures describing the indications and methodology. Ultrasound is a method considered safe for patients as it has not been shown a possible damage due to ultrasound energy transmitted towards the patient's tissues as opposed to methods that make use of ionizing radiation such as conventional radiography and computed tomography. In addition ultrasound is quick and effective in guiding the needle to the desired location avoiding vascular and/or nerve structures thus enabling greater security compared to the techniques performed in interventional fluoroscopy which also have the disadvantage of a large delivery of ionizing radiation for both patient and operator. Several authors have described the main techniques of ultrasound-guided hip intervention and its various applications that can be both diagnostic (as in the case of joint fluid aspiration to assess the presence or absence of septic arthritis) and therapeutic (as in the case of drugs inoculations or evacuation of exceeding intra-articular fluid).

iGEMS : an integrated model for identification of alternative exon usage events

2016

DNA microarrays and RNAseq are complementary methods for studying RNA molecules. Current computational methods to determine alternative exon usage (AEU) using such data require impractical visual inspection and still yield high false-positive rates. Integrated Gene and Exon Model of Splicing (iGEMS) adapts a gene-level residuals model with a gene size adjusted false discovery rate and exon-level analysis to circumvent these limitations. iGEMS was applied to two new DNA microarray datasets, including the high coverage Human Transcriptome Arrays 2.0 and performance was validated using RT-qPCR. First, AEU was studied in adipocytes treated with (n = 9) or without (n = 8) the anti-diabetes drug,…

Estimation of Leaf Area in Bell Pepper Plant using Image Processing techniques and Artificial Neural Networks

2021

Measurement and estimation of physical properties of plant leaves have always been considered as important requirements for monitoring and optimizing of plant growth. This study aimed at utilization of image processing and artificial intelligence techniques for non-invasive and non-destructive estimation of bell pepper leaves properties in the first month of growth. Physical properties of bell pepper plant leaves were extracted from RGB images. The algorithm makes use of gradient magnitude and watershed image. Leaf area as the most important index of growth was estimated as a function of other physical parameters including leaf length, width, perimeter etc. Using stereo imaging, the leaf di…

Analysis of an Experimental Model of In Vitro Cardiac Tissue Using Phase Space Reconstruction

2014

International audience; The in vitro cultures of cardiac cells represent valuable models to study the mechanism of the arrhythmias at the cellular level. But the dynamics of these experimental models cannot be characterized precisely, as they include a lot of parameters that depend on experimental conditions. This paper is devoted to the investigation of the dynamics of an in vitro model using a phase space reconstruction. Our model, based on the heart cells of new born rats, generates electrical field potentials acquired using a microelectrode technology, which are analyzed in normal and under external stimulation conditions. Phase space reconstructions of electrical field potential signal…

Role of polysialic acid (PSA) in the control of food intake and body weight

2013

Hypothalamus plays a major role in the regulation of energy homeostasis by the presence of neural circuits controlling food intake. These circuits are plastic and can be rewired during adulthood. We hypothesized that synaptic plasticity can occur during physiological conditions. We have shown that synaptic contact on hypothalamic anorexigen POMC neurons are rewired in mouse upon high fat diet (HFD). This synaptic process is mandatory to adjust energy intake and requires the glycan PSA (polysialic acid). PSA promotes synaptic plasticity in the brain by the weakening of cell-to-cell interaction by addition on NCAM (neural cell adhesion molecule). We hypothesized that a defect in brain synapti…
