Reconstruction of Low Energy Neutrino Events with GPUs at IceCube

IceCube is a cubic kilometer neutrino observatory located at the South Pole that produces massive amounts of data by measuring individual Cherenkov photons from neutrino interaction events in the energy range from few GeV to several PeV. The actual reconstruction of neutrino events in the GeV range is computationally challenging due to the scarcity of data produced by single events. This can lead to run times of several weeks for the state-of-the-art reconstruction method – Pegleg – on CPUs for typical workloads of many ten-thousand events. BGSA: a bit-parallel global sequence alignment toolkit for multi-core and many-core architectures

Abstract Motivation Modern bioinformatics tools for analyzing large-scale NGS datasets often need to include fast implementations of core sequence alignment algorithms in order to achieve reasonable execution times. We address this need by presenting the BGSA toolkit for optimized implementations of popular bit-parallel global pairwise alignment algorithms on modern microprocessors. The dimeric titanium(III) and vanadium(III) complexes [M2(µ-Cl)2Cl4(thf)4](M = Ti 1 or V 2, thf = tetrahydrofuran) have been prepared by recrystallization of [MCl3(thf)3] from dichloromethane. In the dimers, composed of slightly distorted edge-sharing octahedra, the metal atoms separated by Ti ⋯ Ti and V ⋯ V distances of 3.711 (3) and 3.619(1)A, respectively, are surrounded by two terminal Cl atoms, two oxygen atoms of thf molecules and are linked by two bridging Cl atoms. The geometry around the titanium atoms differs from that around vanadium because the thf molecules and the terminal chlorine atoms are differently located with respect to the bridging chlorine atoms of the M2(µ-Cl)2 unit.…

Linked amido—cyclopentadienyl ligands were introduced by Bercaw and Shapiro in the late eighties with the catalysts of the type Sc(η5:η1-C5Me4SiMe2N t Bu)X (X = H, alkyl) [1]. These electronically more unsaturated and sterically more accessible analogs of ansa-scandocene complexes were found to be capable of catalyzing the living oligomerization of the α-olefins propylene, 1-butene, and 1-pentene. A spatially resolved investigation of oxygen adsorption on polycrystalline copper and titanium by means of photoemission electron microscopy

Abstract The interaction of oxygen with polycrystalline copper and titanium surfaces was studied by means of photoemission electron microscopy. Variations in the image brightness were used to determine the work function of different Cu crystallites. The change of the work function was monitored during oxygen adsorption on both, Cu and Ti. Those changes are smooth for Cu whereas different Ti crystallites exhibit a rather complicated behavior during oxygen adsorption. The transformation of brightness versus exposure curves into work function versus coverage curves allows to determine the initial dipole moment of the adsorbed oxygen atoms. It is well-known that protein-modified implant surfaces such as TiO(2) show a higher bioconductivity. Fibronectin is a glycoprotein from the extracellular matrix (ECM) with a major role in cell adhesion. It can be applied on titanium oxide surfaces to accelerate implant integration. Not only the surface concentration but also the presentation of the protein plays an important role for the cellular response. Non-fouling TiO2 surfaces are attractive for a wide range of applications such as biosensors and medical devices, where biologically inert surfaces are needed. Typically, this is achieved by controlled surface modifications which prevent protein adsorption.
