Der pikareske Roman als Katalysator in geschichtlichen Abläufen : erzählerische Kommunikationsmodelle in Das Leben des Lazarillo von Tormes, bei Thom…

2005

Anna-Riitta Tunturi tutki väitöskirjassaan pikareski- eli veijariromaanin eri ilmenemismuotoja historiallisena läpileikkauksena, sosiologisena ilmiönä ja romaanitaiteen osa-alueena. Sana ”pícaro” tulee kastiliankielen verbistä ”picar”, joka tarkoittaa alempiarvoisten ammattien harjoittamista, kuten picador de toros, pikadori härkätaistelussa, toreadorin avustaja. Saksaksi sana on Schelm, joten oma sanamme kelmi on saksalaista lainaa. Lisäksi suomen kielessä on veijari, huijari, heittiö tai hulttio, ja lisääkin varmasti löytyy. This dissertation in comparative literature examines several Finnish picaresque novels of 20th century in relation to some classical continental European novels such …

Interaction of somatoform and vestibular disorders

2006

The high coincidence of organic vestibular and somatoform vertigo syndromes has appeared to support pathogenic models showing a strong linkage between them. It was hypothesised that a persisting vestibular dysfunction causes the development of anxiety disorders. To determine the relation between vestibular deficits and somatoform vertigo disorders in an interdisciplinary prospective study.Participants were divided into eight diagnostic groups: healthy volunteers (n=26) and patients with benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo (BPPV, n=11), vestibular neuritis (n=11), Menière's disease (n=7), vestibular migraine (n=15), anxiety (n=23), depression (n=12), or somatoform disorders (n=22). Search for extra dimensions in diphoton events from proton-proton collisions at root s=7 TeV in the ATLAS detector at the LHC

2013

The large difference between the Planck scale and the electroweak scale, known as the hierarchy problem, is addressed in certain models through the postulate of extra spatial dimensions. A search for evidence of extra spatial dimensions in the diphoton channel has been performed using the full set of proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV recorded in 2011 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. This dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.9fb[superscript −1]. The diphoton invariant mass spectrum is observed to be in good agreement with the Standard Model expectation. In the context of the model proposed by Arkani–Hamed, Dimopoulos and Dvali, 95% confidence le…

Diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma and its precursor lesions

2007

Improvement of survival rate and quality of life after treatment of oral squamous cell carcinoma as well as cost reduction requires reliable early diagnosis of the tumor and its precursor lesions. Four different screening methods are primarily employed: toluidine blue staining (visually detected lesions: sensitivity 70-100%, specificity 25-67%), photodynamic diagnosis (sensitivity 94-99%, specificity 60-89%), autofluorescence (no data published so far) and modern oral cytology (sensitivity 80%,specificity 95-100%). Additional analytic procedures such automated image analysis, DNA image cytometry and immunocytochemistry can be used to enhance the low sensitivity of conventional oral cytology…

Autofluorescence Imaging of the Skin Is an Objective Non-Invasive Technique for Diagnosing Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum

2021

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a rare multisystemic autosomal recessive connective tissue disease. In most cases, skin manifestations of PXE are the first to develop, followed later by severe ocular and cardiovascular complications. In our present study, in addition to dermoscopy, we introduced novel techniques, autofluorescence (AF) and diffuse reflectance (DR) imaging for the assessment of affected skin sites of five PXE patients. PXE-affected skin areas in most skin sites showed a previously observed pattern upon dermoscopic examination. With the novel imaging, PXE-affected skin lesions displayed high AF intensity. During our measurements, significantly higher mean, minimum and maximu…

SELDI-TOF-MS ProteinChip array profiling of tears from patients with dry eye.

2005

Protein and peptides in tears play an important role in ocular surface diseases. In previous studies, changes have been demonstrated in the electrophoretic protein profiles of patients with dry eye. The purpose of this work was to determine the usefulness of surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS) ProteinChip Array (Ciphergen Biosystems, Inc., Fremont, CA) technology for the automated analysis of proteins and peptides in tear fluid.Patients with dry eye (DRY, n = 88) and healthy subjects (CTRL, n = 71) were examined. Their tear proteins were analyzed using SELDI-TOF-MS ProteinChip Arrays with three different chromatographic surfaces (CM10…

Combination of Autofluorescence imaging and salivary protoporphyrin in Oral precancerous and cancerous lesions: non-invasive tools

2014

Background: Normal and cancerous tissues have distinct auto-fluorescence properties because of differences in their biophysical and biochemical agents. Scientific evidences related to diagnostic fluorescence imaging for detection of oral precancerous and cancerous lesions are very limited. Objectives: The aim of this study was to find out potential relationships between serum, salivary and tissue protoporphyrin IX ( PX) levels in subjects with or without oral precancerous and cancerous lesions. Also, to find out diagnostic value of fluorescence imaging (VELscope® system, LED Dental Inc., White Rock, B.C.) and salivary protoporphyrin IX (PX) in oral precancerous and cancerous lesions. Furthe…

Nonepithelial skin tumors with multinucleated giant cells

2013

Recognition of the different types of multinucleated giant cells in neoplastic and pseudotumoral lesions of the skin may be helpful in the differential diagnosis of these tumors. In this review, we will analyze the different types of multinucleated giant cells that can be found in nonepithelial cutaneous tumors and, more importantly, the clinicopathological context in which they are found. Touton giant cells are typically present in juvenile xanthogranuloma, necrobiotic xanthogranuloma, and some subtypes of xanthomas. Giant cells with a ground glass appearance are typically present in the solitary reticulohistiocytoma and multicentric reticulohistiocytosis. Osteoclast-like cells are found i…

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans: a comprehensive review and update on diagnosis and management

2013

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare superficial tumor characterized by high rates of local recurrence and low risk of metastasis. DFSP occurs most commonly on the trunk and proximal extremities, affects all races, and often develops between the second and fifth decade of life. The tumor grows slowly, typically over years. Histologically, several variants of DFSP have been described and should be well characterized to avoid misdiagnosis with other tumors. These include pigmented (Bednar tumor), myxoid, myoid, granular cell, sclerotic, atrophic DFSP, giant cell fibroblastoma, and DFSP with fibrosarcomatous areas. Of all these variants, only the DFSP with fibrosarcomatous areas is…
