One of the characteristics of Alzheimer´s disease (AD) is an increased amyloid load and an enhanced level of reactive oxidative species (ROS). Vitamin E has known beneficial neuroprotective effects, and previously, some studies suggested that vitamin E is associated with a reduced risk of AD due to its antioxidative properties. However, epidemiological studies and nutritional approaches of vitamin E treatment are controversial. Garcinoic acid prevents β-amyloid (Aβ) deposition in the mouse brain

Garcinoic acid (GA or δ-T3-13'COOH), is a natural vitamin E metabolite that has preliminarily been identified as a modulator of nuclear receptors involved in β-amyloid (Aβ) metabolism and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, we investigated GA's effects on Aβ oligomer formation and deposition. Specifically, we compared them with those of other vitamin E analogs and the soy isoflavone genistein, a natural agonist of peroxisome proliferator–activated receptor γ (PPARγ) that has therapeutic potential for managing AD. Abstract Seeds of Raphanus sativus L. subjected to accelerated ageing were investigated for reactive oxygen species (ROS) release and for content of vitamin E (tocopherol, TOC, and tocotrienol, TOC-3), fatty acids and phytosterols in seed coats, cotyledons and embryonic axes during germination. In unaged seeds, ROS release occurred mainly in seed coats of non-imbibed seeds and in seedlings (48 h of imbibition). TOC and TOC-3 were mainly represented by the c-isoform, abundant in embryonic axes. Fatty acids were mainly found in cotyledons. Determination of tocopherols in vegetable oils by CEC using methacrylate ester-based monolithic columns

The separation and determination of tocopherols (Ts) in vegetable oils by CEC using methacrylate ester-based monolithic columns has been developed. The effects of pore size of the monolithic columns were studied, and the composition of mobile phase was optimized. The optimal pore size of the monolith was obtained with 12 wt% 1,4-butanediol in the polymerization mixture. Excellent resolution between tocopherols was achieved within 10 min analysis time with a 99:1 v/v MeOH-aqueous buffer containing 5 mM tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane at pH 8.0. Radical cations of vitamin E

Radical cations of vitamin E compounds (α-, β-, γ- and δ-tocopherols and α-, β-, γ- and δ-tocotrienols) were for the first time successfully prepared in different solvents. Their unpaired electron distribution was solved by means of EPR and ENDOR spectroscopy and assignment of isotropic hyperfine couplings was performed. The isotropic hyperfine coupling constants calculated theoretically (UB3LYP) were comparable to those studied experimentally. Radical cations were observed to exist as an intermediate product in the formation of the neutral radical. Extraction of wheat germ oil by supercritical CO2 : Oil and defatted cake characterization

In this paper the working conditions for the extraction of wheat germ oil in a supercritical CO2 pilot plant of 1-L extraction capacity were studied. The best conditions were: pressure, 38 MPa; temperature, 55degreesC; wheat germ particle size, about 0.35 mm; CO2 flow rate, 1.5 L min(-1). These conditions gave yields of about 92% of total oil after 3 h of processing. The obtained oils and the partially defatted cake were investigated with regard to their FA, tocol (tocopherol and tocotrienol), carotenoid, and sterol compositions and to their quality characteristics (FFA, PV, para-anisidine value, and color of the by-product).
