Melatonin formation in different parts of the guinea-pig pineal complex as assessed over 24 hours.
1985
There is morphological evidence that the pineal gland is not a uniformly built organ but rather a complex. In the guinea-pig the gland is 6--7 mm in length and dumbbell-shaped, the proximal part coming into intimate contact with central commissural fibres. The aim of the present 24-hour study was to examine in male guinea-pigs whether the proximal, intermediate and distal areas of the gland are involved in melatonin formation and to compare their rhythmicities. Levels of melatonin in serum and the whole pineal gland as assessed by RIA show day/night ratios of 1 : 1.25 and 1 : 3.3, respectively. Serotonin N-acetyltransferase activity was found to exhibit ratios of 1 : 1.75 (Experiment I) and…
Response of pineal serotonin N-acetyltransferase activity in male guinea pigs exposed to light pulses at night.
1988
Serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT), which is crucial for the formation of melatonin, undergoes a typical day/night rhythm in the pineal gland with low levels during daytime and high levels at night. Short pulses of light given at night have been shown to rapidly depress NAT activity in some species, but not in others, the reasons for this difference being unclear. As diurnality and nocturnality of the experimental animals may play a role and since diurnally active animals have been little investigated in this respect, in the present study the diurnally active guinea pig was investigated. Male guinea pigs kept under a lighting regimen of LD 12:12 (lights off at 1700 hrs) were killed between…
Neuropeptide Y effects on pineal melatonin synthesis in the rat
1987
Neuropeptide Y (NPY)-like immunoreactivity is present in the rodent pineal gland. To elucidate possible effects on pineal melatonin synthesis NPY (5 nmol/kg body wt.) was injected into the common carotid artery of male rats. Activities of the melatonin biosynthetic enzymes, serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT) and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT) were determined by means of radioenzymatic methods. Intact light-exposed animal showed increased NAT activity at day- and at nighttime. Blinded animals showed a more than 10-fold reduction of NAT activity after nocturnal NPY injections. HIOMT activity was only slightly influenced at either time. These results are discussed in terms of the p…

Synthesis of 3-Oxa-guaianolides from Santonin
2000
Abstract This article reports on the transformation of santonin into two C10-epimeric 3-oxa-guaianolides which are 8-deoxyderivatives of several natural 3-oxaguaianolides isolated from Achillea species. The synthesis involved the photochemical rearrangement of the eudesmane skeleton into a guaiane skeleton and the transformation of the cyclopentane ring into a furan moiety with the concomitant loss of C3. Comparison of the NMR data of the synthetic products with those of the natural products confirms the β orientation of the hydroxyl group at C10 in the products isolated from Achillea.
Aminosäureester als chirale Hilfsgruppen in Lewis-Säure-katalysierten Diels-Alder-Reaktionen
1990
Amino Acid Esters as Chiral Auxiliaries in Lewis Acid Catalyzed Diels-Alder Reactions Cyclopentadiene, cyclohexadiene and alkyl-substituted butadienes react with N-acryloyl-, N-crotonoyl- and N-(4-nitro-cinnamoyl)-(S)-proline benzyl and allyl ester in the presence of Lewis acids to give the cycloadducts in high yields and with stereoselectivities of up to 97:3 for the endo isomers. The sense of the asymmetric induction in these reactions can be directed by the use of differently coordinating catalysts (e.g. TiCl4: (2R):(2S) = 96:4; EtAlCl2: (2R):(2S) = 10:90 at 0°C). In the TiCl4-catalyzed reactions with the fumaric acid derivatives the ratio of the diastereomers reaches values of up to 112…
Darstellung und polymerisation von diestern aus 2,2′-methylendiphenolen und acryl-, methacryl- bzw. Crotonsäure
1984
Several mono- and diesters of four selected 2,2′-methylenediphenols with acrylic, methacrylic, and crotonic acid were synthesized for the first time. Special emphasis was paid to the preparation of diesters with two different acyl groups which could be obtained via the corresponding monoesters. The radical polymerization of these esters with AIBN (mainly in benzene) gave insoluble (crosslinked) products from dimethacrylates and soluble (linear) polymers from mixed diesters with methacrylic and crotonic acid, while the dicrotonates are not reactive.
Rete di centri minori. Temi e progetti nel territorio di Tindari
2019
The protection of natural and cultural resources in small towns is a topic of growing interest within the European context and aims to enhance the local heritage toward an interaction consciously balanced between human activities. The project Tindari 2030: Natural emotion led by the research group LabCity Architecture aims to indicate and enhance the territory of Tindari with regard to its natural, cultural and religious resources, such as the Sanctuary of the Black Madonna, an archaeological site (396 BC), the sandy naturalistic system of the 'Laghetti di Marinello',the 'Coda di Volpe' trail, which is the remaining part of the 'Via Francigena Palermo-Messina per la marina'. This project in…
Surface plasmon-polariton amplifiers
2012
Propagation of surface plasmons at metal surfaces is receiving much interest nowadays because of its broad range of potential applications, like subwavelength photonics or biosensing. Although plasmonic devices achieve unique properties, surface plasmons suffer from high attenuation because of the absorption losses in the metal. This limitation can be overcome by providing the material adjacent to the metal with optical gain. Under these conditions, absorption losses are compensated and the propagation length of the plasmon is significantly increased. In this work, a review of plasmonic amplifiers is presented. To this end, the state of the art of such devices and the propagation characteri…
Active deformation evidence in the offshore of western Calabria (southern Tyrrhenian Sea) from ultra-resolution multichannel seismic reflection data:…
2020

An ultra-resolution, multichannel seismic reflection data set was collected during an oceanographic cruise organised in the frame of the “Earthquake Potential of Active Faults using offshore Geological and Morphological Indicators” (EPAF) project, which was founded by the Scientific and Technological Cooperation (Scientific Track 2017) between the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Space of the State of Israel. The data acquisition approach was based on innovative technologies for the offshore imaging of stratigraphy and structures alo…
