In an open clinical trial the authors treated 18 hospitalized patients suffering from endogenous depression with brofaromine (CGP 11305A), a competitive, selective, and short-acting inhibitor of type A monoamine oxidase (MAO). Four patients were defined as good responders, as they had a final HAMD score of between 0 and 7 points. Four patients were judged as improved, with final HAMD scores of between 8 and 15 points, while the remaining eight patients failed to respond (final HAMD score greater than or equal to 16 points). Platelet-activating factor type activity in plasma from patients with septicemia and other diseases

The purpose of the present study was to determine whether increased levels of platelet-activating factor (PAF) type activity can be detected in plasma from patients with septicemia and other diseases. A level of PAF below 0.5 ng/mL of plasma was considered normal. We found that plasma from a patient with adverse anaphylactoidic reaction to intravenous analgetics contained 2.1 ng PAF/mL. In seven patients with septicemia, including urosepsis, endocarditis and peritonitis, and with positive blood culture, increased plasma PAF levels (1-20 ng PAF/mL) were observed. Effects of cigarette smoking or ingestion of nicotine on platelet 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) levels in smokers and non-smokers.

Platelets of healthy smokers and non-smokers were prepared and their content of 5-hydroxytryptamine was determined by HPLC with electrochemical detection. Platelet 5-HT levels in smokers (728 +/- 156 pmol per 10(8) platelets, mean +/- SEM, n = 9) were significantly higher than those in non-smokers (353 +/- 156 pmol per 10(8) platelets, n = 11). Smoking of a single cigarette caused a transient increase in platelet 5-HT levels by about 350% in non-smokers, but had no additional effect in smokers. Similarly, chewing of nicotine gum (4-8 mg nicotine) resulted in a transient increase in platelet 5-HT by about 100% in non-smokers, but not in smokers. The case of a 25 year old female patient with pseudohypoparathyroidism type I (PHP) and hypercalcitoninaemia is reported. She was referred to our clinic because of recurrent hypocalcaemia associated with paraesthesias and muscle cramps. She had no signs of Albright hereditary osteodystrophy (AHO), a normal mental status and no family history of hypocalcaemia or any other endocrine disease.
