Procalcitonin levels in plasma in oncohaematologic patients with and without bacterial infections.

2004

Abstract Background: The flogosis markers currently in use show both low sensitivity and specificity, particularly in neoplastic and degenerative diseases. Procalcitonin (PCT) is a pro-peptide of calcitonin produced mainly but not only in the C-cells of the thyroid glands and, as several studies show, PCT levels in plasma increase during infections. Bacterial infections are also the main cause of death in oncological patients. Furthermore, in patients with leukaemia in chemotherapy recovery, infections often induce relapses. The aim of the present study is to detect PCT levels in plasma in oncohaematologic patients with and without infections. Methods: The study was carried out on 54 patien…

PHEA-graft-polymethacrylate supramolecular aggregates for protein oral delivery

2013

Abstract Salmon calcitonin (sCT) is characterized by a poor oral availability. A new copolymer, β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-graft-{N-2-ethylene[2-poly(methacrylic acid sodium salt)isobutyrate]}- d , l -aspartamide (PHEA-IB-p(MANa + )), was designed for the oral administration of sCT through the formation of supramolecular aggregates (SAs) based on electrostatic interactions. Several sCT/PHEA-IB-p(MANa + ) weight ratios were characterized by turbidimetry, DLS, zeta potential, and microscopy analysis. After the incubation of sCT/PHEA-IB-p(MANa + ) complex with digestive enzymes, 10% (w/w) of loaded sCT was released in the native form. In vitro investigation was carried out to determine the copol…

Lower rim arylation of calix[n]arenes with extended perfluorinated domains

2006

Abstract Exhaustive O-arylation of p-tert -butylcalix[ n ]arenes 2 ( n  = 4–8) with an excess of 3-pentadecafluoroheptyl-5-pentafluorophenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole 3 and K 2 CO 3 in refluxing acetonitrile provides an easy entry to a new family of perfluorinated calix[ n ]arenes 1 . The cyclic tetramer furnishes a mixture of cone , partial cone , and 1,2-alternate conformers, while the larger macrocycles afford single products. The structures of all new compounds are substantiated by NMR techniques and MALDI-TOF mass spectral data. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies on the pentamer derivative 1b reveal a distorted cone-in conformation of the calixarene cup.

Fake Landscapes

2016

Camouflage was a strategic technique used during the Second World War mainly in California but aslo elsewhere. It consisted in a massive operation on the landscape. The essay analyses it…

The Muscleblind family of proteins: an emerging class of regulators of developmentally programmed alternative splicing.

2006

Alternative splicing is widely used to generate protein diversity and to control gene expression in many biological processes, including cell fate determination and apoptosis. In this review, we focus on the Muscleblind family of tissue-specific alternative splicing regulators. Muscleblind proteins bind pre-mRNA through an evolutionarily conserved tandem CCCH zinc finger domain. Human Muscleblind homologs MBNL1, MBNL2 and MBNL3 promote inclusion or exclusion of specific exons on different pre-mRNAs by antagonizing the activity of CUG-BP and ETR-3-like factors (CELF proteins) bound to distinct intronic sites. The relative activities of Muscleblind and CELF proteins control a key developmenta…

Salso-bromo-iodine thermal water: a nonpharmacological alternative treatment for postnasal drip-related cough in children with upper respiratory trac…

2018

Postnasal drip (PND)-related cough is a very common symptom in patients with upper respiratory tract infections (URTis). At present, there is not a standard treatment for postnasal drip and postnasal drip-related cough. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the efficacy of a specific salso-bromoiodine thermal water containing hyaluronic acid and grapefruit seed extract (SBI-H-GSE) comparing it with a normal saline solution in children with URTis who refer PND-related symptoms. The study was randomized, single-blind, and controlled. Study group (75 children) was treated with SBI-HGSE and control group (65 children) was treated with a normal saline solution; both compounds were administ…

Overview of Prognostic Systems for Hepatocellular Carcinoma and ITA.LI.CA External Validation of MESH and CNLC Classifications

2021

Simple Summary This review proposes a comprehensive overview of the main prognostic systems for HCC classified as prognostic scores, staging systems, or combined systems. Prognostic systems for HCC are usually compared in terms of homogeneity, monotonicity of gradients, and discrimination ability. However, despite the great number of published studies comparing HCC prognostic systems, it is rather difficult to identify a system that could be universally accepted as the best prognostic scheme for all HCC patients encountered in clinical practice. In order to give a contribute in this topic, we conducted a study aimed at externally validate the MESH score and the CNLC classification using the…

From traditional Chinese medicine to rational cancer therapy

2007

Many natural products and derivatives thereof belong to the standard repertoire of cancer chemotherapy. Examples are Vinca alkaloids, taxanes and camptothecins. In recent years, the potential of natural products from plants, notably from medicinal plants used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been recognized by the scientific community in the Western world. To provide an example of the most recent developments in this field, we have selected several compounds, namely artesunate, homoharringtonine, arsenic trioxide and cantharidin, that are found in natural TCM products and that have the potential for use in cancer therapy. Controlled clinical studies have shown that homoharringtoni…

The analysis of 51 genes in DSM-IV combined type attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: association signals in DRD4, DAT1 and 16 other genes.

2006

Contains fulltext : 35205.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder, starting in early childhood and persisting into adulthood in the majority of cases. Family and twin studies have demonstrated the importance of genetic factors and candidate gene association studies have identified several loci that exert small but significant effects on ADHD. To provide further clarification of reported associations and identify novel associated genes, we examined 1,038 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) spanning 51 candidate genes involved in the regulation of neurotransmitter pathways, particularly dopamine, nor…
