Competition between liquid-crystalline ordering and glassy freezing in melts of semiflexible polymers: A monte carlo simulation

1999

We present results of a Monte Carlo simulation of dense melts of semiflexible polymers using the bond-fluctuation model. The chosen Hamiltonian increases the chain stiffness upon cooling which in turn leads to glass-transition like freezing of the polymer mobility. Employing an efficient simulation algorithm, which is able to equilibrate the simulated systems to lower temperature than the Rouse-type algorithm showing the glassy freezing, we are able to observe an isotropic-nematic phase transition. This transition lies above the glass transition temperature one would extrapolate from the observed freezing behavior.

Monte Carlo simulations of the polymer glass transition: From the test of theories to material modeling

1997

We present results on the glass transition in polymer melts using Monte Carlo simulations of the bond fluctuation lattice model. There are two questions we address in this work. What is the temperature dependence of the entropy density in such a model polymer melt and how well is it described by theories like the Gibbs-DiMarzio theory of the glass transition? And to what degree is one able to map the Hamiltonian of such an abstract lattice model onto a specific polymer material and use it to model the large scale and long time properties of a realistic polymer melt?

Electronic structure of polysilanes: influence of substitution and conformation

1993

Abstract The valence effective Hamiltonian (VEH) quantum-chemical approach is used to investigate the electronic properties of polysilane. The valence band structure calculated for this fully saturated polymer is analyzed in terms of orbital contributions and compared to that of the closely related carbon polymer, polyethylene. The effects of alkyl substitution and silicon backbone conformation are studied by elucidating the modifications that these structural changes induce on the electronic valence band structure of all-trans unsubstituted polysilane. The VEH results predict a decrease of the band gap upon alkyl substitution and on going from helical to all-trans conformations.

Some Physical Appearances of Vector Coherent States and CS Related to Degenerate Hamiltonians

2005

In the spirit of some earlier work on the construction of vector coherent states over matrix domains, we compute here such states associated to some physical Hamiltonians. In particular, we construct vector coherent states of the Gazeau-Klauder type. As a related problem, we also suggest a way to handle degeneracies in the Hamiltonian for building coherent states. Specific physical Hamiltonians studied include a single photon mode interacting with a pair of fermions, a Hamiltonian involving a single boson and a single fermion, a charged particle in a three dimensional harmonic force field and the case of a two-dimensional electron placed in a constant magnetic field, orthogonal to the plane…

$PT$-symmetric graphene under a magnetic field

2016

We propose a $PT$-symmetrically deformed version of the graphene tight-binding model under a magnetic field. We analyze the structure of the spectra and the eigenvectors of the Hamiltonians around the $K$ and $K'$ points, both in the $PT$-symmetric and $PT$-broken regions. In particular we show that the presence of the deformation parameter $V$ produces several interesting consequences, including the asymmetry of the zero-energy states of the Hamiltonians and the breakdown of the completeness of the eigenvector sets. We also discuss the biorthogonality of the eigenvectors, which {turns out to be} different in the $PT$-symmetric and $PT$-broken regions.

Effective Hamiltonians in Nonrelativistic Quantum Electrodynamics

2021

In this paper, we consider some second-order effective Hamiltonians describing the interaction of the quantum electromagnetic field with atoms or molecules in the nonrelativistic limit. Our procedure is valid only for off-energy-shell processes, specifically virtual processes such as those relevant for ground-state energy shifts and dispersion van der Waals and Casimir-Polder interactions, while on-energy-shell processes are excluded. These effective Hamiltonians allow for a considerable simplification of the calculation of radiative energy shifts, dispersion, and Casimir-Polder interactions, including in the presence of boundary conditions. They can also provide clear physical insights int…

Agricultural Policy and the Struggle over the Destiny of Collective Farms in Estonia

1999

The principal goal of several Estonian governments has been the privatization of agriculture, replacing large collective farms with western family farms. This has happened despite a clear majority of kolkhoz and sovkhoz workers who favoured preserving the system of large-scale farms. The abstract restitutionalist and ultra-liberalist ideas became a fixed dogma, unconnected with resolving immediate pragmatic problems, because government policy was not articulated with the interests of the agricultural population. Nevertheless, the large-scale system has been partially preserved thanks to the resistance of the rural population. In many respects the outcome of decollectivization also depended …

Using high-resolution stratigraphy and structural analysis to constrain a “polyphase” tectonics in wedge-top basins. Inferences from the Late Tortoni…

2012

Abstract The present paper aims to show, both from a stratigraphic and structural points of view, the main features of a wedge-top syntectonic basin which evolved recording polyphase and non-coaxial tectonics. The study area is the Scillato Basin ( SB ), a roughly N–S-oriented structural depression located in the central-northern sector of the Sicililian Maghrebides. There, an approximately 1300 m-thick upper Serravallian to upper Tortonian succession of clastic units outcrops as a portion of the Neogene syntectonic covers of the Sicilian fold and thrust belt. Within the outcropping succession the upper Tortonian Terravecchia Fm represents the main topic of this paper. A multidisciplinary a…
