Circulating immune complexes in Fièvre boutonneuse.

1985

Circulating immune complexes (CIC) occurred in 36% of a group of 25 patients with Fièvre boutonneuse. CIC were present only in the first week of the disease and there was no evidence of other humoral immunological abnormalities or alterations of the coagulation factors studied. The presence of CIC was not associated with a more severe clinical manifestation or with symptoms or tissue injuries. It is considered that CIC do not play a major role in Fièvre boutonneuse.

A 4 tonne demonstrator for large-scale dual-phase liquid argon time projection chambers

A 10 kilo-tonne dual-phase liquid argon TPC is one of the detector options considered for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The detector technology relies on amplification of the ionisation charge in ultra-pure argon vapour and offers several advantages compared to the traditional single-phase liquid argon TPCs. A 4.2 tonne dual-phase liquid argon TPC prototype, the largest of its kind, with an active volume of \three has been constructed and operated at CERN. A contemporary challenge involves scientific education and the connection between new technologies and the heritage of the past. CubeHarmonic (CH) joins novelty and tradition, creativity and edu- cation, science and art. It takes shape as a novel musical instrument where magnetic 3D motion tracking technology meets musical per- formance and composition. Musical chords and chord relations can be described through mathematics. Abstract permutations can be visualized through the Rubik’s cube, born as a pedagogical device [7,21]. Permutations of notes can also be heard through the CubeHarmonic, a novel musical instru- ment. Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF) is a tick-borne disease caused by Rickettsia conorii. It is characterized by the symptomatologic triad of fever, exanthema and «tache noire» – the typical eschar at the site of the tick bite. Oral or parenteral administration of tetracyclines or chloramphenicol represent the standard treatment; however, both these drugs may cause significant adverse effects in children. Recent studies indicate that oral clarithromycin and azithromycin may represent an acceptable alternative for the treatment of children with MSF.
