A New FEC Scheme for Real-time Transmission of High Definition Video over IP Network

2007

Increasing the applicability of ubiquitous computing, minimizing energy consumption and hardware cost are mandatory in real world applications. In this paper we present our platform prototype for ubiquitous computing, which has been implemented based on commercial Bluetooth off-the-shelf components. It allows every object to be augmented with processing and communication capabilities in order to make them "smart". We validate our proposal by evaluating the trade-off between power consumption and performance of the experimental prototype.

Building a research prototype to provide pervasive services in hospitals

2008

Research into the nature of pervasive computing has now been around for more than a decade. Nowadays pervasive applications exploit mobile wireless communication technologies to interconnect computing devices along with various sensing technologies, setting up a new kind of intelligent environment where applications can transparently search and use services without userspsila intervention. However, there are few examples of real world deployment of pervasive computing moving out from academic laboratories into our everyday life. We present BlueHospital - a research prototype that provides context-aware information and location based services to clinicians in hospitalspsila recovery wards. T…

Software Requirements for Ubiquitous Ad Hoc Mobile Networks: An Example of a Bluetooth Application

2009

In contrast with the simple and elegant concept of global computing, also called ubiquitous computing - where daily life objects get now computing capacity and interact among them to provide a wide range of services to users - a major difficulty is arising with the software engineering process to develop applications for these devices. This article discusses the additional parameters that should be taken into account when designing and developing software for ubiquitous devices in ad-hoc networks. In these networks the mobility of the devices could increase the complexity of the requirements to be considered. As a case study, we present a Bluetooth application that has been developed to ful…

Fracture resistance of roots filled with three different obturation techniques

2012

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare in vitro root fracture resistance following root canal filling with AH 26 using lateral condensation, BeeFill, and Thermafil techniques. Study Design: Eighty extracted human mandibular premolars with similar dimensions were selected. In order to standardize the roots, measurements were taken in two separate regions of the teeth—at the cemento-enamel junction and 8 mm apically from the junction—buccolingual as well as mesiodistal for every tooth. Teeth were then randomly divided into five groups (n=16). With the exception of the non-prepared group (Group 1), instrumentation was done in all groups. In group 2, instrumentation but no filling was…

Effects of preemptive analgesia with intravenous acetaminophen on postoperative pain relief in patients undergoing third molar surgery: a prospective…

2020

Background The efficacy of preemptive analgesia in managing postoperative pain remains controversial. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of intravenous (IV) acetaminophen administered before or immediately after the surgical extraction of an impacted mandibular third molar. Material and Methods This prospective randomized clinical trial included 120 patients. The patients were assigned to one of three groups: the preoperative-treatment group (pre-group), which received 1000 mg of IV acetaminophen 20 min before surgery; the postoperative-treatment group (post-group), which received 1000 mg of IV acetaminophen after surgery; the no-treatment group (control-group), which did not…

Hyaluronic acid treatment outcome on the post-extraction wound healing in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes: A randomized controlled sp…

2020

Background Hyaluronic acid is widely used in the medical field. However, there is a lack of research about its effect on patients with certain risks, such as compromised wound healing commonly found in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes. The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy of hyaluronic acid on the post-extraction wound healing and pain in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes. Material and Methods The randomized controlled split-mouth study was designed, which included 30 patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes with a bilaterally same teeth in the lower jaw for extraction. The sockets treated with 0.8% hyaluronic acid represented the study gr…

Effective hemostasis during minor surgery in a case of hereditary combined deficiency of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors.

2009

Combined deficiency of the vitamin K-dependent clotting factors (VKCFD) is a rare bleeding disorder involving defective gamma-carboxylation of coagulation factors II , VII, IX and X as well as natural anticoagulants protein C and protein S. The disease is characterized by a cluster of different, often life threatening, bleeding symptoms occurring both spontaneously and in a surgical setting. In the present paper we describe two different treatment modalities to be used both in a programmed surgical procedure and in an emergency scenario. As this disease is a natural model that resembles oral anticoagulation, our experience discloses a possible rationale in the use of recombinant activated …

Evaluation of the effect of different enamel surface treatments and waiting times on the staining prevention after bleaching

2017

Background Bleached dental enamel can be more susceptible to staining than the enamel that has never been bleached, especially right after tooth bleaching. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of surface treatments and waiting time prior to contact with dye on bleached enamel staining susceptibility. Material and Methods One hundred teeth were bleached with 35% hydrogen peroxide (Whiteness HP, FGM) and randomly assigned to G1 artificial saliva, G2 2% sodium fluoride (Flugel, Nova DFL), G3 casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate fluoride paste (CPP-ACPF, MI Paste Plus, GC America), G4 rinse for color maintenance after bleaching (Keep White Rinse, DMC) and G5 polishing wi…

A Java-based Wrapper for Wireless Communications

2008

The increasing number of new applications for mobile devices in pervasive environments, do not cope with changes in the wireless communications. Developers of such applications have to deal with problems arising from the available wireless connections in the given environment. A middleware is a solution that allows to overcome some of these problems. It provides to the applications a set of functions that facilitate their development. In this paper we present a Java-based communication wrapper, called SmartTraffic, which allows programmers to seamlessly use TCP or UDP protocols over Bluetooth or any IP-based wireless network. Developers can use SmartTraffic within their Java applications, t…
