The formation of peak rings in large impact craters.

2016

The Chicxulub impact crater, known for its link to the demise of the dinosaurs, also provides an opportunity to study rocks from a large impact structure. Large impact craters have “peak rings” that define a complex crater morphology. Morgan et al. looked at rocks from a drilling expedition through the peak rings of the Chicxulub impact crater (see the Perspective by Barton). The drill cores have features consistent with a model that postulates that a single over-heightened central peak collapsed into the multiple-peak-ring structure. The validity of this model has implications for far-ranging subjects, from how giant impacts alter the climate on Earth to the morphology of crater-dominated …

A homotopy fixed point theorem in 0-complete partial metric space

2015

We generalize a result of Feng and Liu, on multi-valued contractive mappings, for studying the relationship between fixed point sets and homotopy fixed point sets. The presented results are discussed in the generalized setting of 0-complete partial metric spaces. An example and a nonlinear alternative of Leray-Schauder type are given to support our theorems.

Homotopy limits for 2-categories

2008

AbstractWe study homotopy limits for 2-categories using the theory of Quillen model categories. In order to do so, we establish the existence of projective and injective model structures on diagram 2-categories. Using these results, we describe the homotopical behaviour not only of conical limits but also of weighted limits. Finally, pseudo-limits are related to homotopy limits.

Editor's Choice – Follow-up of Patients After Revascularisation for Peripheral Arterial Diseases: A Consensus Document From the European Society of C…

2019

International audience; Peripheral arterial diseases comprise different clinical presentations, from cerebrovascular disease down to lower extremity artery disease, from subclinical to disabling symptoms and events. According to clinical presentation, the patient's general condition, anatomical location and extension of lesions, revascularisation may be needed in addition to best medical treatment. The 2017 European Society of Cardiology guidelines in collaboration with the European Society for Vascular Surgery have addressed the indications for revascularisation. While most cases are amenable to either endovascular or surgical revascularisation, maintaining long-term patency is often chall…

Di nuovo schiave. Donne e distopia (2007-2022)

2022

Dietary methods and biomarkers of omega 3 fatty acids: a systematic review

2012

The aims of the present study were to review the validity of dietary methods used to measure the usual long chain (LC) omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 PUFA) intake of a population and to assess the usefulness of different biomarkers ofn-3 PUFA in healthy humans. Two systematic literature searches were conducted until May 2011 to update previous systematic reviews. The first literature search aimed to find studies validating the methodology used for measuring the dietary intake ofn-3 PUFA. The second search aimed to find human intervention studies in whichn-3 PUFA status changed after 2 weeks ofn-3 PUFA supplementation. Sixteen studies were identified for inclusion in the first revie…

Articaine versus lidocaine inferior alveolar nerve block in posterior mandible implant surgeries: a randomized controlled trial

2023

Background: The aim of this study is to compare the effects of %4 articaine and %2 lidocaine on inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) for implant surgery in the posterior mandible.Material and Methods: The patients who have inserted implants in the posterior mandible were divided into 2 groups for IANB: lidocaine and articaine. VAS = visual analog scale, pain during surgery and injection, lip numb-ness time, mandibular canal-implant apex distance, age, gender, bone density, implant number, release incision, adjacent teeth, and duration of surgery were analyzed using t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Spearman's coefficient, and, Pearson's chi-squared test. This trial followed the recommendations o…

Spontaneous Epileptic Manifestations in a DCX Knockdown Model of Human Double Cortex

2010

Previous reports indicate that in utero knockdown of doublecortin (DCX) results in the genesis of a subcortical heterotopia reminiscent of the doublecortex observed in female patients with DCX mutations. It has also been shown that these rats display an increased susceptibility to convulsant agents and increased cortical neurons excitability; but it is presently unknown whether they display spontaneous seizures. Furthermore, the link between the size of heterotopia and the clinical manifestation remained to be elucidated. Using video--electrocorticogram recordings, we now report that DCX knockdown induces frequent spontaneous seizures commonly associated with myoclonic jerks in adult rats. …

Interspecific transgenic analysis of basal versus heat-shock-induced expression of a Drosophila pseudoobscura hsp82-neo fusion gene in D. melanogaster

1994

Drosophila melanogaster transformants containing a D. pseudoobscura hsp82-neo fusion gene were used to examine the relationship between chromosome structure and its variation to transcriptional activation and gene expression. At normal temperatures (25° C) transgenic hsp82-neo was transcribed in diffuse polytene chromosomal bands encoding antibiotic G418-resistance without intensive puff formation. Substantial basal expression of the transgene was observed in all tissues examined: salivary glands, brain, ventral ganglion, foregut, gastric caeca, midgut, imaginal discs, nurse cells and oocytes. In addition, basal hsp82-neo expression occurred throughout embryogenesis. In third-instar larvae …
