Optical and visual performance of diffractive intraocular lens implantation after myopic laser in situ keratomileusis

2008

To evaluate the optical and visual quality in eyes with diffractive intraocular lenses (IOLs) after myopic laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK).Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Oviedo, Spain. The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA [distance]) at 12.5%, 25.0%, and 100% contrasts under photopic and mesopic conditions; best distance-corrected near acuity; corneal total higher-order aberrations (HOAs); and optical quality by modulation transfer function (MTF) were measured after myopic LASIK in eyes with a spherical AcrySof ReSTOR SN60D3 IOL or an aspheric Acri.LISA 366D IOL and phakic eyes (control).Under photopic conditions at 100% contrast, the BCVA was 0.1 logMAR or better in all g…

Visual quality after diffractive intraocular lens implantation in eyes with previous hyperopic laser in situ keratomileusis

2010

To evaluate distance, intermediate, and near visual quality in eyes with diffractive intraocular lens (IOL) implantation after previous hyperopic laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK).Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Oviedo, Spain.Cohort study.Corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) at 12.5%, 25.0%, and 100% contrast levels under photopic and mesopic conditions; uncorrected (UNVA) and distance-corrected (DCNVA) near visual acuity, defocus curves, and corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs) were measured in eyes that had AcrySof Restor SN60D3 spherical IOL implantation (study group) and in phakic eyes (control group) after hyperopic LASIK.Under photopic conditions at 100% contrast, …

The carotid pulse check revisited: What if there is no pulse?

2000

This study was undertaken to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and time required by first responders to assess the carotid pulse in potentially pulseless patients. We conducted a prospective, randomized study of first responders (n = 206; four different training levels) and were blinded as to the patients' conditions in the cardiac operating rooms of a university hospital. Sixteen patients underwent coronary artery bypass surgery on nonpulsatile cardiopulmonary bypasses. Carotid pulse check was performed either during pulsatile (spontaneous) or during nonpulsatile (extracorporeal) circulation. Patients' hemodynamic status at the time of assessment, diagnostic accuracy of the first responders…

The effects of enzalutamide and abiraterone on skeletal related events and bone radiological progression free survival in castration resistant prosta…

2017

Two new drugs, the CYP17 inhibitor abiraterone acetate and the androgen receptor (AR) antagonist enzalutamide, have recently shown to prolong OS prior chemotherapy or in docetaxel treated mCRPC patients, using steroidal therapy or placebo as control group. Updated analyses underlined the role of these new agents on two prostate-specific endpoints as radiographic progression-free survival (rPFS) and time to first skeletal-related event (tSRE). On the basis of these reports, we made an indirect comparison between abiraterone and enzalutamide. We obtained a clinically but not significant difference favouring enzalutamide over abiraterone in terms of rPFS (HR 0.48, 95% CI 0.22–1.02). No signi…

Hepatitis C Virus Infection Is Associated With Increased Cardiovascular Mortality: A Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies

2015

There have been many studies of the effects of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection on cardiovascular risk, but these have produced ambiguous results. We performed a meta-analysis of these studies to systematically assess the risk of HCV infection on cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related morbidity and mortality. We searched PubMed Central, Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Library, as well as reference lists of articles, for studies published through July 2015 that compared the occurrence of CVD between HCV-infected and HCV-uninfected subjects, or assessed the prevalence of HCV infection among subjects with CVDs. In total, 22 studies were analyzed. Data on the patient populations and outcomes were e…

The "red umbilicus": a diagnostic sign of cow's milk protein intolerance

2006

Introduction: Red umbilicus is considered to be an infectious disease typical of neonates. In our experience, umbilical erythema could be due to cow's milk protein intolerance (CMPI). Aims: To evaluate the frequency and clinical significance of umbilical erythema in a series of consecutive children referred for suspected CMPI. Patients and Methods: Seven hundred ninety-six consecutive patients (median age, 18 months) referred for suspected CMPI diagnosis were studied. CMPI diagnosis was based on the disappearance of symptoms on elimination diet and their subsequent reappearance on double-blind placebo-controlled cow's milk challenge. Results: CMPI was diagnosed in 384 patients: 120 with res…

Effects of statins on lipid profile in chronic kidney disease patients: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

2013

The available data on statin effects in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients are still conflicting. We investigated the impact of short- and long-term statin therapy on lipid profiles in CKD patients requiring or not requiring dialysis.Data from Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library from 1966 to May 2012 were searched for studies that investigated this effect. We included all randomized controlled clinical trials that investigated the impact of statin therapy on lipids and lipoproteins. The final analysis included 16 trials with 3594 subjects. In CKD patients, statin therapy significantly reduced total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG) and low-density lipoprotein chole…

Rates and correlates of suicidal ideation among stroke survivors: a meta-Analysis

2017

BACKGROUND: A better understanding of the epidemiological impact of suicidal ideation after stroke is required to identify subjects needing personalised interventions. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this meta-analysis was to estimate rates and correlates of suicidal ideation among stroke survivors. METHODS: We searched via Ovid, Medline, Embase and PsycInfo from database inception until August 2016. Predefined outcomes were (1) rates of suicidal ideation based on random-effects pooled proportion and (2) relevant sociodemographic and clinical correlates, using random-effects odds ratio (OR) or standardised mean difference (SMD) for categorical and continuous variables, respectively. RESULTS: Fifteen …

Evaluation of post-myocardial infarction regional and global left ventricular function by monoplane ventriculography: superiority of right versus lef…

1996

OBJECTIVES To study the significance of serial quantitative regional wall motion analysis, volumes, and ejection fraction findings as well as their prognostic implications derived from cineventriculography in 30 degrees right anterior oblique (RAO) projection in comparison with 60 degrees left anterior oblique (LAO) projection in post-myocardial infarction patients. Ventriculographic left ventricular parameters are accepted surrogates of mortality in myocardial infarction. Nowadays, in contrast to a biplanar approach in most institutions and clinical trials, the investigation is reduced to monoplanar ventriculography. However, it is not known whether the relevance of the two established pro…
