Assessing the performance of thermal inertia and Hydrus models to estimate surface soil water content

2017

The knowledge of soil water content (SWC) dynamics in the upper soil layer is important for several hydrological processes. Due to the difficulty of assessing the spatial and temporal SWC dynamics in the field, some model-based approaches have been proposed during the last decade. The main objective of this work was to assess the performance of two approaches to estimate SWC in the upper soil layer under field conditions: the physically-based thermal inertia and the Hydrus model. Their validity was firstly assessed under controlled laboratory conditions. Thermal inertia was firstly validated in laboratory conditions using the transient line heat source (TLHS) method. Then, it was applied in…

An interpolation-based data fusion scheme for enhancing the resolution of thermal image sequences

2014

In several human activities, such as agriculture and forest management, the monitoring of radiometric surface temperature is key. In particular both high spatial resolution and high acquisition rate are desirable but, due to the hardware limitations, these two characteristics are not met by the same sensor. The fusion of remotely sensed data acquired by sensors with different spatial and temporal resolution is a profitable choice to face this issue. When the real-time requirement is relaxed, the data sequence can be processed as a whole, allowing to improve the final result. Within this framework, we propose a novel batch sharpening strategy, relying on interpolation, data fusion and Bayesi…

Measurements of anterior chamber depth, white-to-white distance, anterior chamber angle, and pupil diameter using two Scheimpflug imaging devices.

2014

Purpose: To compare the ocular anterior chamber depth, white-to-white distance, anterior chamber angle, and pupil diameter, as measured with two different Scheimpflug imaging devices. Methods: This transversal study included 80 right eyes from 80 subjects aged from 20 to 40 years. Their spherical equivalents ranged from -4.25 to +1.00 diopters (D). Each eye's anterior chamber depth, white-to-white distance, anterior chamber angle, and pupil diameter, were measured for far vision using both the Galilei G4 (double Scheimpflug camera) and the Pentacam HR (single Scheimpflug camera) systems. Results: Mean anterior chamber depths were calculated as 3.12 ± 0.23 mm and 3.19 ± 0.24 mm when measured…

A geostatistical approach to map near-surface soil moisture through hyperspatial resolution thermal inertia.

2021

Thermal inertia has been applied to map soil water content exploiting remote sensing data in the short and long wave regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Over the last years, optical and thermal cameras were sufficiently miniaturized to be loaded onboard of unmanned aerial systems (UASs), which provide unprecedented potentials to derive hyperspatial resolution thermal inertia for soil water content mapping. In this study, we apply a simplification of thermal inertia, the apparent thermal inertia (ATI), over pixels where underlying thermal inertia hypotheses are fulfilled (unshaded bare soil). Then, a kriging algorithm is used to spatialize the ATI to get a soil water content map. The pr…

La struttura diocesana nella Sicilia tardoantica e bizantina: i dati archeologici

2022

The reconstruction of ecclesiastical geography of Christian origins constitutes one of the most current fields of study of Postclassical Archeology in Europe. The contribution aims to update current knowledge on the state of research in Sicily in the light of the new data acquired from archeology.

Settore L-ANT/10 - Metodologie Della Ricerca ArcheologicaSettore L-ANT/09 - Topografia AnticaSettore L-ANT/08 - Archeologia Cristiana E Medievale

Automatic detection and agronomic characterization of olive groves using high-resolution imagery and LIDAR data

2014

The Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union grants subsidies for olive production. Areas of intensified olive farming will be of major importance for the increasing demand for oil production of the next decades, and countries with a high ratio of intensively and super-intensively managed olive groves will be more competitive than others, since they are able to reduce production costs. It can be estimated that about 25-40% of the Sicilian oliviculture must be defined as “marginal”. Modern olive cultivation systems, which permit the mechanization of pruning and harvest operations, are limited. Agronomists, landscape planners, policy decision-makers and other professionals have a grow…

I livelli neolitici della Grotta San Michele di Saracena (CS)

2021

The cave of San Michele lies on the right side of the narrow Garga valley, facing the modern settlement of Saracena (Cosenza) at an altitude of 750 m.a.s.l. Research conducted from 1998 to 2009 revealed an uninterrupted stratigraphic sequence from the Neolithic period to the Bronze Age. Studies of material from the Neolithic levels and the availability of radiocarbon dating allow for a reconstruction of the history of the Calabrian Sibaritide-Pollino populations in this period, highlighting the area as a meeting point of different cultural influences coming from south-east and south-west of Southern Italy.
