On the Choice of the Most Suitable Period to Map Hill Lakes via Spectral Separability and Object-Based Image Analyses

2023

Technological advances in Earth observation made images characterized by high spatial and temporal resolutions available, nevertheless bringing with them the radiometric heterogeneity of small geographical entities, often also changing in time. Among small geographical entities, hill lakes exhibit a widespread distribution, and their census is sometimes partial or shows unreliable data. High resolution and heterogeneity have boosted the development of geographic object-based image analysis algorithms. This research analyzes which is the most suitable period for acquiring satellite images to identify and delimitate hill lakes. This is achieved by analyzing the spectral separability of the su…

Digital orthophotos at a scale of 1:5000 from high resolution satellite images

2004

This paper describes the first results of a study, carried out within the national research program “Cofin2001”, on the potential use of high resolution satellite images for making digital orthophotos at a scale of 1:5000 and 1:10,000. Particularly, images from IKONOS II and QuickBird of four different types of areas were employed: the first area is the city of Palermo, a greatly urbanized area; the second area is the extra-urban territory near the town of Contessa Entellina in south-western Sicily; the third area is the famous tourist resort of Scopello, in the western Sicily; the last area is the Caselle Airport, a flat zone near Torino. The first three images were orthorectified by using…

Remote Sensing applications in archaeology

2011

In recent years Remote Sensing applications in archaeology have become increasingly frequent. This plurality of applications depends mostly on the rising interest of the scientific community in modern methods for surveying geographic data, which have become increasingly powerful, automatic and reliable. Remote Sensing, with its various techniques, offers the rapid acquisition of a huge quantity of metric and qualitative data in order to describe or to identify archaeological sites. For an appropriate and widespread use of these data, it is still necessary to have recourse to GIS techniques; as a matter of fact, only the combined use of both methodologies provides a full exploitation of thei…

SPIE Proceedings Vol. 8538 Earth Resources and Environmental Remote Sensing/GIS Applications III

2012

These proceedings contain 53 papers that were presented at the SPIE Conference “Earth Resources and Environmental Remote Sensing/GIS Applications” (Conference 8538A) formerly known under the title ‘Remote Sensing for Environmental Monitoring, GIS Applications, and Geology’. The Conference took place in Edinburgh, United Kingdom from 24 September to 27 September 2012. It was the twelfth Conference with this topic after its inauguration in Toulouse, France, in 2001. The Conference sessions with presented papers and interactive posters were grouped into the following themes: Processing Methodologies, Hazard Mitigation Geologic Application, Processing Methodologies, Infrastructures and Urban Ar…

EDITORIAL FOR SPECIAL ISSUE: “GEOMATICS APPLICATION FOR GEOGRAPHY (GAG)” in GEOGRAPHIA TECHNICA

2021

Geomatics or Geography, that is the question! This is how the authors' idea of merging Geomatics and Geography in this special issue begins, paraphrasing a Shakespearean citation. The common principle that unites these two scientific disciplines, which attempt to describe the territory in the most straightforward way possible. On the other hand, Geomatics and Geography derived from “gèo- “[greek γεω-], as first element of composed words in learned and scientific terminology, meaning “earth”, “globe”, “land surface”.

Object oriented methodology for change detection technique: the case of Scopello-Sicily

2014

This paper describes a change detection approach based on an object-based classification of remote sensing data for the change detection. The history of urban growth and urbanisation reveals that urban areas belong to the most dynamic land cover types on earth. The trend of urban growth is usually towards the urban-rural fringe where there are less built areas, irrigation and other water management systems. Regardless of the regional economic importance, urban growth, particularly the expansion of residential and commercial land use towards the periphery of urban areas, has an impact on the ecosystem. It is evident that such trend of urban growth has an impact on natural resources and on la…

Reservoir monitoring using satellite SAR and GNSS: a case study in southern Italy

2018

Recently, it has been demonstrated that it is possible to relate water levels of a reservoir with its dam displacements. Water levels were determined via remote sensing, while dam displacements were measured via Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Results have shown that displacements and water levels are correlated.Water levels at the Magazzolo reservoir in southern Italy were firstly retrieved using two remote sensing approaches: by visual matching between the reservoir shoreline and contour lines, and by evaluating the surface extent via unsupervised classification to estimate the water levels with an area/depth relation. Dam displacements were measured using GPS receivers on the …

A reverse engineering approach to measure the deformations of a sailing yacht

2016

In this work, a multidisciplinary experience, aimed to study the permanent deformations of the hull of a regatta sailing yacht is described. In particular, a procedure to compare two different surfaces of the hull of a small sailing yacht, designed and manufactured at the University of Palermo, has been developed. The first one represents the original CAD model while the second one has been obtained by means of a reverse engineering approach. The reverse engineering process was performed through an automatic close-range photogrammetry survey, that has allowed to obtain very accurate measures of the hull, and a 3D modelling step by the well-known 3D computer graphics software Rhinoceros. The…
