Monitoring of Enzyme Substitution Using the Cholesteryl Octanoate Breath Test

The efficiency of enzyme replacement therapy in pancreatic insufficiency is usually judged on the grounds of clinical improvement and the effect on steatorrhea: treatment is thought to be successful if steatorrhea is abolished or, at least, reduced. In the majority of patients, the amount of enzyme necessary to alleviate steatorrhea can be reduced if lipase is protected against acidic inactivation either by blocking H2 secretion of the stomach or by protecting enzymes by pH-sensitive enteric coating. However, steatorrhea is frequently not abolished and a differential treatment may be necessary in each patient.

Measurments of collisional line widths in the stimulated Raman Q-branch of the ν1 band of silane

Self-broadened widths of 28SiH4 in the ν1Q-branch have been measured at room temperature (295 K) using high-resolution stimulated Raman Spectroscopy. These collisional widths have been obtained by fitting a super-position of Voigt profiles to the experimental spectra in the pressure range 28–154 Torr. No evidence for line mixing within the tetrahedral components of a Q(J) line has been found. The line broadening coefficients for J up to 13 depend weakly on the rotational quantum number. The mean value is 103.7 × 10−3 cm−1 atm−1.

Enhancement of sensitivity in high-resolution stimulated Raman spectroscopy of gases: Applicaion to the 2ν2 (1285 cm−1) band of CO2

The application of a multiple-pass gas cell to quasi-cw stimulated Raman scattering is demonstrated to be a powerful method for significantly increasing the sensitivity. As a consequence, such a device offers the possibility of working in the 0.1–1 Torr pressure range for weak bands. As a striking example, experimental results are given for the 2ν2 band of CO2 at 1285 cm−1. The band is almost completely resolved with a very good signal-to-noise ratio. Open Cell Al-Si Foams by a Sintering and Dissolution Process

Open cell foams from AlSi12 alloy were successfully fabricated by the Sintering and Dissolution Process, using NaCl as space holder (60 %). The size of the aluminum alloy powder is less than 45 μm, while the space holder powder size is 315-500 μm, 630-800 μm and 800-1250 μm respectively. The appropriate quantities of alloy powder and salt were mixed and cold pressed at 250 MPa. The sintering process was done at 500 °C and 545 °C, in vacuum (10-5 torr) for 10, 20 and 30 minutes respectively. The space holder was eliminated by holding the sintered samples in running hot water (70 °C). After the salt was dissolved, the samples were dried and the mass loss was analyzed. Removal of nitrogen from wastewaters (WW) represents a global problem. The low nitrification rate during WW treatment is often caused by ecotoxicity. This problem is attributed mostly to the industrial WW.
