Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

2014

Our man stands with his face turned towards bygone times. He must spin around to catch a glimpse of the new days waiting to rise. The tornithologist has also arrived at the very essence of his own being, the point of embarkation, from which he can set off in search of the roots of each present moment. For the Torni, being a tower involves a twin-layered perceptual dimension. The height of the tower allows views to far-off places. From the top the gaze of an observer can pick out distant landscapes. Rising into the heavens also means standing out from one’s surroundings and this makes it impossible for a tower to conceal itself. In other words, it is gazed from and gazed upon. Even though th…

Bounds on models with one latticized extra dimension

2003

We study an extension of the standard model with one latticized extra dimension accessible to all fields. The model is characterized by the size of the extra dimension and the number of sites, and contains a tower of massive particles. At energies lower than the mass of the new particles there are no tree-level effects. Therefore, bounds on the scale of new physics can only be set from one-loop processes. We calculate several observables sensitive to loop-effects, such as the $\rho$ parameter, $b\to s \gamma$, $Z\to b\bar b$, and the $B^0\rightleftharpoons\bar{B}^0$ mixing, and use them to set limits on the lightest new particles for different number of sites. It turns out that the continuo…

Extensible Wind Towers

2014

The diffusion of wind energy generators is restricted by their strong landscape impact. The PERIMA project is about the development of an extensible wind tower able to support a wind machine for several hundred kW at its optimal working height, up to more than 50 m. The wind tower has a telescopic structure, made by several tubes located inside each other with their axis in vertical direction. The lifting force is given by a jack-up system confined inside a shaft, drilled below the ground level. In the retracted tower configuration, at rest, tower tubes are hidden in the foundation of the telescopic structure, located below the ground surface, and the wind machine is the only emerging part …

Observations of molecular hydrogen mixing ratio and stable isotopic composition at the Cabauw tall tower in the Netherlands

2016

AbstractMeasurements of the stable isotopic composition (δD(H2) or δD) of atmospheric molecular hydrogen (H2) are a useful addition to mixing ratio (χ(H2)) measurements for understanding the atmospheric H2 cycle. δD datasets published so far consist mostly of observations at background locations. We complement these with observations from the Cabauw tall tower at the CESAR site, situated in a densely populated region of the Netherlands. Our measurements show a large anthropogenic influence on the local H2 cycle, with frequently occurring pollution events that are characterized by χ(H2) values that reach up to ≈1 ppm and low δD values. An isotopic source signature analysis yields an apparent…

La traduzione costruttiva lituana negli edifici di culto in legno tra i secc. XVIII e XIX

2014

Lithuania is situated in a highly forested Northeastern Europe area and has a variety of wooden buildings. Among the wooden structures we enumerate the religious buildings, churches and bell towers, rich of historic values, presenting different forms and sizes, a complex design and stratified construction phases. The present work aims to study this interesting topic and intends not only to analyze the architectural typology but even more the technological and structural aspects, that had suggested the most influences on building techniques during the centuries.

Il dibattito culturale attorno alle prime sperimentazioni di tutela attiva dei monumenti architettonici

2022

In Sicily the first service of active protection of monuments was experimented with a law of Ferdinand IV Borbone, who named the princes of Biscari and Torremuzza ‘royal guardians’ and Carlo Chenchi ‘architect of antiquities’. In that period, the temple of Segesta was restored, which had been damaged by lightning in 1726 which struck the eastern façade and a column was built with different stones which, a few years later, was declared too distinguishable. In the cathedral of Palermo in 1835 the construction of a neo-Gothic bell tower was completed based on a project by the architect Emanuele Palazzotto, which replaced the Baroque one built after the earthquake of 1726. Restoration has perha…

The Southeast Asian Lady {Boy}

2021

A telescopic wind tower with reduced environmental impact - The Perima Project

2019

A prototype of a telescopic pole for wind energy production with low environmental impact and its lifting system for a 60 to 250 kW turbine and a height of 30 m have been designed and manufactured. A telescopic tower, which is raised and lowered by automation or by remote control, allows to differentiate the presence of the generator within the landscape over time. Research target: the optimal design of the telescopic coupling, the design for maintaining the preload and for the rotational decoupling, the optimization of the pairs of sleeves, the design of the pegs and the bushes of the jack-up lifting system. All the components of the wind tower have been preliminary analyzed through FEM st…
