Long-term Results of Combined Cataract, IOL and Glaucoma Surgery

1994

OBJECTIVE: To determine the long-term intraocular pressure (IOP) control in patients that had undergone combined extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE), lens implant and glaucoma surgery and compare the results obtained by the longer and shorter follow-up groups. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study of postoperative results with a minimum follow-up of one year, maximum of 10 years and a mean of 33.1 months. SETTING: Department of Opthalmology, ‘La Fe’ University Hospital. Department of Surgery of Valencia School of Medicine, Valencia, Spain. PATIENTS: Ninety-five eyes examined of 72 patients presenting coexisting cataract and glaucoma who underwent combined surgery in the last 11 years. MAIN…

Argon laser suture lysis following glaucoma filtering surgery – A short introduction to the procedure

2010

Abstract Background Trabeculectomy is the most commonly performed glaucoma filtering surgery. The success of the outcome of an operation to reduce the intraocular pressure (IOP) is dependent on postoperative wound modulation by antimetabolite therapy and by flow regulation of the filtering bleb, which can be achieved by argon laser suture lysis. Methods and case report Postoperative IOP controls, examination of bleb formation and bleb massage can lead to the decision to perform up to four argon laser suture lyses in order to reduce IOP and enhance aqueous humor flow and bleb formation. The procedure is described here in a case report. Conclusion After glaucoma filtering surgery, argon laser…

Current Status of Epibulbar Anti-glaucoma Drainage Devices in Glaucoma Surgery

2012

SUMMARY Background: The term “glaucoma” covers a hetero geneous group of progressive optic neuropathies that are accompanied by characteristic visual-field defects. Primary open-angle glaucoma, the most common type, progresses insidiously and causes blindness if untreated. All current forms of treatment aim at lowering the intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients whose IOP is elevated. The implantation of anti-glaucoma drainage systems is one of the available options for surgical treatment. Methods: This review is based on pertinent literature retrieved by a selective search, including glaucoma treatment guidelines from Germany and abroad. Results: A paradigm shift is currently underway regar…

Latanoprost-induced iris darkening: a morphometric study of human peripheral iridectomies.

2003

Abstract Purpose. This microscopic study was undertaken to compare the melanocytes of peripheral iridectomy specimens from two eyes that had latanoprost-induced iris darkening (LIID) with iridectomies taken from the fellow untreated eyes. Methods. The two patients in this study were the ones who underwent LIID in the latanoprost treated eye from a series of 17 patients requiring bilateral trabeculectomy. The first trabeculectomy procedure provided a control peripheral iridectomy for each patient, whereas the second eye was treated with once daily 50 μg ml−1 latanoprost drops for 6 months. The four peripheral iridectomy specimens from the two LIID patients were subjected to quantitative morp…

Histology and Fine Structure of the Iris and Outflow System Following Latanoprost Therapy

2002

Latanoprost therapy can lead to iris darkening in susceptible individuals, particularly those with hazel eyes. Concerns have been raised about whether latanoprost, and for that matter other prostanoids, may have a harmful effect on the iris. In addition, it is unknown whether latanoprost causes increased pigmentation of the outflow pathways that might eventually lead to blockage and a type of pigmentary glaucoma. The present study summarizes findings from the authors' own laboratories on the effects of latanoprost as seen by light and electron microscopy of the iris and outflow tissues and reviews the as yet limited, relevant literature. The findings support the proposal that latanoprost-in…

Bleb grading by photographs versus bleb grading by slit‐lamp examination

2019

Purpose Using a bleb-grading system clinically facilitates long-term follow-up of patients with previous glaucoma surgery. Clinical evaluation of these patients can be challenging for untrained ophthalmologists. Morphological bleb configuration might influence planning of follow-up visits in glaucoma patients due to different and individual prognosis after trabeculectomy. In this study, we compared the MaBAGS (Mainz Bleb Appearance Grading System), a classification system for filtering blebs with other classification systems (MBGS/Moorfields Bleb Grading System, IBAGS/Indiana Bleb Appearance Grading Scale) in reference to usability and reliability and compare it to grading by bleb photograp…
