The feasibility of partial least squares (PLS) regression modeling of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectra of estuarine sediments has been evaluated as a tool for rapid trace element content monitoring. Multivariate PLS calibration models were developed to predict the concentration of Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, V and Zn in sediments collected from different locations across the estuary of the Nerbioi-Ibaizabal River (Metropolitan Bilbao, Bay of Biscay, Basque Country). Trace metal concentrations were measured in different tissues of Sabella spallanzanii, Styela plicata and Mytilus galloprovincialis collected in Termini Imerese harbor, located in Sicily (Italy), in order to evaluate the potential use of these species as bioindicators. The higher bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) were calculated in tube of Sabella spallanzanii, except for As which shows the higher BAF in branchial crown of the same specie. Regarding the other species analyzed, higher BAFs were found in the digestive gland of Mytilus galloprovincialis. There is concern that the use of natural volcanic CO2 vents as analogs for studies of the impacts of ocean acidification on marine organisms are biased due to physiochemical influences other than seawater pH alone. Earth's deep convecting upper mantle is believed to represent a rather homogenous geochemical reservoir of spinel or garnet lherzolite with primitive major element and moderately depleted trace element composition. Only where subduction occurs is this homogeneity disrupted by a suite of rocks ranging from eclogites/garnet pyroxenites (former oceanic crust) to residual harzburgites. Mirror of Venus lake (MV) is a small (1.5 km2) endorheic alkaline lake located in a calderic depression on the northern side of Pantelleria Island (South Italy), a quiescent Pleistocenic stratovolcano located in the NW-SE trending continental rift developed between North Africa and Sicily. The lake, sub-squared in shape (around ca 450 m long and ca 350 m wide and 13 m depth) water input contribution is essentially from the thermal springs situated on its shores (Q = 0.1 l.s-1) and from meteoric waters. High-grade metamorphic tourmaline and white mica from the Broken Hill area, NSW, Australia, were analyzed with laser-ablation ICP–MS and ion-probe techniques to investigate the partitioning of trace elements and fractionation of boron isotopes between these two coexisting phases. The results indicate that most trace elements show partition coefficients close to one; only elements such as Zn, Sr, the light rare-earth elements La and Ce, and Th, partition preferentially into tourmaline, whereas Rb, Ba, W, Sn, and Nb and Ta are preferentially partitioned into coexisting mica.
