New High Voltage Interconnections with Islands in the Mediterranean Sea: Malta and Sicily. Analysis of the Effects on Renewable Energy Sources Integr…

2018

The present paper shows the benefits coming from the operation of the recent electrical high voltage (HV) interconnections between Sicily, Malta and mainland Italy. These new interconnections allow zonal prices of electricity considerably lower than in the past, ensuring greater flexibility to the system and a better integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES). After briefly illustrating the two high-voltage electrical systems (Sicily and Malta), and having provided a description of the interconnection cable with Malta and its protection devices, the authors hypothesized two modes of operation (Sicily-Malta system islanded or interconnected to the rest of Europe). For the first case (isla…

Anterograde tracing of retinohypothalamic afferents with Fluoro-Gold

1997

The anterograde neuronal tracing properties of Fluoro-Gold (FG) were characterized in this study by its ability to label the retinohypothalamic tract (RHT) upon pressure injection of the substance into the vitrous body of the eye in the Djungarian hamster, Phodopus sungorus. Tracing was compared to the anterograde neuronal transport of cholera toxin B subunit (CTB), Fast blue (FB), Phaseolous vulgaris leucoagglutinin (PHA-L) and biocytin. After survival times that ranged from 24 h to 4 weeks, a major projection was found to the bilateral hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). Labeling was also found in the anterior medial preoptic nucleus and, in relatively sparse amounts, in the latera…

Method to Define User Interfaces in the Requirements Analysis Phase

2018

Many requirements for quality in use are elicited in the late development phase. However, if requirements are elicited in the late development phase, the development may return to the previous phase or some requirements cannot be realized due to costs and schedules. To reduce these cases, we propose a method to elicit the requirements in the requirements analysis phase. First, software developers analyze the user characteristics (UCs) of the target users and specify important quality characteristics (QCs) for quality in use and UI design items based on the relationships among UC, QC, and UI design items. Because UI design items are considerations to develop UIs, the specified UI design item…

PCR-DGGE fingerprints of microbial succession during a manufacture of traditional water buffalo mozzarella cheese.

2004

D . E R C O L I N I , G . M A U R I E L L O , G . B L A I O T T A , G . M O S C H E T T I A N D S . C O P P O L A . 2003. Aims: To monitor the process and the starter effectiveness recording a series of fingerprints of the microbial diversity occurring at different steps of mozzarella cheese manufacture and to investigate the involvement of the natural starter to the achievement of the final product. Methods and Results: Samples of raw milk, natural whey culture (NWC) used as starter, curd after ripening and final product were collected during a mozzarella cheese manufacture. Total microbial DNA was directly extracted from the dairy samples as well as bulk colonies collected from the plates…

Non-Gaussian Signatures in the Lens Deformations of the CMB Sky. A New Ray-Tracing Procedure

2003

We work in the framework of an inflationary cold dark matter universe with cosmological constant, in which the cosmological inhomogeneities are considered as gravitational lenses for the CMB photons. This lensing deforms the angular distribution of the CMB maps in such a way that the induced deformations are not Gaussian. Our main goal is the estimation of the deviations with respect to Gaussianity appeared in the distribution of deformations. In the new approach used in this paper, matter is evolved with a particle-mesh N-body code and, then, an useful ray-tracing technique designed to calculate the correlations of the lens deformations induced by nonlinear structures is applied. Our appro…

Immunfluorescence study of neuropeptides in identified neurons of the rat auditory superior olivary complex.

1999

The present study was conducted to investigate the distribution and immunohistochemical characteristics of ascending and descending projection neurons of the rat superior olivary complex (SOC), a group of interrelated brainstem nuclei. Ascending neurons were identified by injection of cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) into the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (IC), descending neurons were labeled by application of Fluoro-Gold (FG) into the scala tympani of the cochlea, ipsilaterally to the IC injection. In accordance with the literature, we observed neurons innervating the IC located in the lateral superior olivary nucleus (LSO) and dorsal periolivary groups (DPO) on both sides, in th…

A New Numerical Approach to Estimate the Sunyaev–Zel’dovich Effect

2013

Several years ago, we designed a particular ray tracing method. Combined with a Hydra parallel code (without baryons), it may compute some CMB anisotropies: weak lensing (WL) and Rees–Sciama (RS) effects. Only dark matter is fully necessary to estimate these effects. For very small angular scales, we made an exhaustive study leading to a lensing contribution slightly—but significantly—greater than previous ones. Afterwards, the same ray tracing procedure was included in a parallel Hydra code with baryons. The resulting code was then tested. This code is being currently applied to the study of the thermal and kinetic Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (SZ) contributions to the CMB anisotropies. We present h…

Confidentiality and disclosure of HIV infection: HIV-positive persons' experience with HIV testing and coping with HIV infection in Latvia.

2000

The objective of the study was to explore retrospectively HIV-infected individuals experience with HIV testing counseling and the issue of confidentiality in the Latvian context. A qualitative study using grounded theory approach and based on semi-structured in-depth interviews was implemented. 13 HIV-positive individuals above 18 were selected using purposeful sampling from the 63 HIV-positive individuals registered in Latvia between 1987 and 1997. HIV-infected people are worried that doctors sometimes disrespect confidentiality. Confidentiality was found to be a basic prerequisite for building trusting relationships between an HIV-infected individual and a doctor within the counseling pro…

Poly(2-vinylpyridine)-Based Polymers as an Efficient Affinity Material for the Detection of Airborne Phenol

2015

Phenol is an omnipresent compound in various situations. Its acute toxicity makes alternative tracing methods desirable. Highly potent affinity materials based on polyvinyl pyridine allow an efficient tracing of this particular airborne compound. Their performance over, for example, benzene is tremendously superior. In combination with a simple cyclodextrin derivative an array allows differentiation among such aromatic competitors. Owing to the high affinity of these polymers for phenol, quartz microbalance-based tracing is able to detect phenol below the parts per million range. This was previously not possible with other affinity materials.
