What Gender-Neutral Legislation Owes to Grammar: The Concept of ‘Gender’ in Legal English and the Italian Guidelines for Use of Gender-Sensitive Lang…

2022

Gender-neutral language, also called non-sexist, genderinclusive, or non-gender-specific language, refers to language that includes words or expressions that cannot be taken to refer to one gender only. As a matter of fact, languages vary widely in terms of gender systems showing differences in the number of classes, underlying assignment rules and how and where gender is marked. In everyday speech, the word gender is usually associated with the biological and social differences between men and women (as in the case of Italian), and the view that grammatical gender mirrors natural gender is still evident in the terms masculine, feminine, and neuter that are used to label individual gender d…

Social Media and Crowd Diagnosis

2022

The chapter aims at exploring social media platforms as used by individuals to obtain (first or second) opinions in the form of crowd-diagnosis (Nobles et al. 2019) within a social media-critical discourse study (SM-CDS, KhosranoviNik 2018a) perspective. This study explores the communicative ‘territory’ of medical history presentation and, more particularly, it reports results on the communicative skills used by online users to present their own history and design it as challenging. Transcreation and the professions

2014

In Cultus 6 David Crystal said "I don't expect my translator to be a mind-reader [...] knowing about the presuppositions and intentions underlying the utterances made by the participants". Issue 7 will focus on this very point. Who should translate, and who is translating the presuppositions and intentions underlying the utterances made by the participants in the real world? A term for this process is "transcreation", which has been used in the Arts (in particular poetry and drama) to talk about transposition into a different language or into a different medium (a poem is transcreated into an art form or onto the stage). Transcreation has also been closely linked with localisation, but diff…

Ritradurre Kleiner Mann – was nun? di Hans Fallada. Per uno studio contrastivo delle traduzioni

2013
