Accounting for previous events to model and predict traffic accidents at the road segment level: A study in Valencia (Spain)

2022

Abstract Predicting the occurrence of traffic accidents is essential for establishing preventive measures and reducing the impact of traffic accidents. In particular, it is fundamental to make predictions using fine spatio-temporal units. In this paper, the daily risk of traffic accident occurrence across the road network of Valencia (Spain) is modeled through logistic regression models. The spatio-temporal dependence between the observations is accounted for through the inclusion of lagged binary covariates representing the previous occurrence of a traffic accident within a spatio-temporal window centered at each combination of day and segment of the network. A temporal distance of 28 days…

Social Intervention in Traffic Safety

2001

Traffic accidents during the transport of merchandise or passengers on roads and highways have, from the beginning, taken by surprise those who have experienced them themselves or involving persons close to them, as well as those who have witnessed accidents or, in one way or another, helped to alleviate their effects. They say that Albert Einstein commented after the death of a friend: “The worst thing is not only the fact that traffic accidents occur, but also how little we know about why they happen and how little we do to prevent them...”

Motivational and Emotional Aspects Involved in Driving

2001

It is evident that individuals display different behaviors when driving and especially when involved in accidents. These differences seem to be related in various ways to physical, mental and socio-environmental characteristics of the driver. It is also known that a wide range of situational variables that are all too common in our daily lives, such as fatigue, use of drugs, alcohol or certain medication; sleepiness and transitory behavioral alterations such as stress or anxiety, have a negative influence on driving.

Lethal rupture of post-traumatic aneurysm of the vertebral artery case report.

2009

Abstract Traumatic aneurysms or dissections of the vertebral artery have been reported in patients who have suffered minor craniofacial injuries in traffic accidents. A case is reported of ruptured traumatic vertebral artery aneurysm due to closed head injury without without penetrating injuries or skull fractures. The macroscopic and histological findings relevant to the vertebral wall were compatible with post-traumatic aneurysm; the rupture of the wall was assumed to be caused by sepsis and local infiltration of inflammatory cells.

Self-inflicted long bone fractures for insurance fraud.

2018

Self-inflicted fractures simulating traffic accident represent a new social fraud opportunity for criminality. Recognising scams through an increase of awareness of existence of self-inflicted arm fractures for insurance fraud could help community health workers to report these injuries to the competent authorities. In this article, authors have recognised an unusual but consistent pattern of upper and lower limb fractures whose incidence does not coincide in numerical terms with what is reported in literature. The aim of the present study is to describe fracture patterns observed over the past 2 years. Further, authors describe clinical presentations of these fractures and attempt to defin…

Actigraphic and Self-reported Sleep in Traffic Accident Victims

2021

Background: Some accident victims report poorer sleep during the months after the trauma, which may double the risk for and is a mediator of the development of a PTSD. Furthermore, subjective and objective sleep measures are often discrepant in PTSD-patients, which is why a ‘sleep state misperception’ of PTSD patients is often hypothesized. Objective: The goal of this study is to assess differences in sleep quality in victims of a traffic accident compared to healthy participants without an accident history as well as differences between objective and subjective sleep quality measures. Methods: We recruited 25 hospitalized accident victims within ten days of an accident and 31 age and sex-m…

Traffic Safety Basic Facts 2012 : Cyclists

2013

The CARE database brings together the disaggregate details of road accidents and casualties across Europe, by combining the national accident databases that are maintained by all EU member states. Access to the CARE database is restricted, however, so it is important that a comprehensive range of publications based on these data be accessible to the general public. This process was begun in the SafetyNet project that was carried out between 2004 and 2008, and the concept of the Basic Fact Sheet (BFS) Basic Fact Sheets and Annual Statistical Report (ASR) was developed. By 2008, twelve Fact Sheets were being prepared annually by researchers at five institutes. This Fact Sheet presents an over…
