This thesis concentrates on studies of AlOx based tunnel junctions and their feasibility for cooling, thermometry and strain sensing in suspended nanostructures. The main result of the thesis is cooling of one dimensional phonon modes of a suspended nanowire with normal metal insulator superconductor (NIS) tunnel junctions. Simultaneous cooling of both electrons and phonons was achieved, and the lowest phonon temperature reached in the system was 42 mK with an initial temperature of 100 mK. In addition, suspended devices show cooling still at a bath temperature of 600 mK. The impact of a short auditory training on L2 pronunciation in languages with different orthographic depth

It is sometimes assumed that the pronunciation of an L2 is more predictable and thus easier to learn if its orthography is transparent. This study aims to find out whether this assumption holds true in the first stages of L2 learning in languages with different orthographic depth. The study also examines the effect that a short auditory training (supported by simultaneous orthographic input) has on L2 pronunciation. A central finding was that the pronunciation of an L2 with a transparent orthography was not easier to learn for a naïve learner when compared to an L2 with an opaque orthography. Tractional Motion Machines extend GPAC-generable functions

In late 17th century there appeared the Tractional Motion instruments, mechanical devices which plot the curves solving differential equations by the management of the tangent. In early 20th century Vannevar Bush’s Differential Analyzer got the same aim: in this paper we’ll compare the Differential Analyzer mathematical model (the Shannon’s General Purpose Analog Computer, or GPAC) with the Tractional Motion Machine potentials. Even if we will not arrive in defining the class of the functions generated by Tractional Motion Machines, we’ll see how this class will strictly extend the GPAC-generable functions.
