EFFICACY OF REPETITIVE TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION/TRANSCRANIAL DIRECT CURRENT STIMULATION IN COGNITIVE NEUROREHABILITATION

2008

Summary: Cognitive deficits are a common consequence of neurologic disease, in particular, of traumatic brain injury, stroke, and neurodegenerative disorders, and there is evidence that specific cognitive training may be effective in cognitive rehabilitation. Several investigations emphasize the fact that interacting with cortical activity, by means of cortical stimulation, can positively affect the short-term cognitive performance and improve the rehabilitation potential of neurologic patients. In this respect, preliminary evidence suggests that cortical stimulation may play a role in treating aphasia, unilateral neglect, and other cognitive disorders. Several possible mechanisms can accou…

Managing Peripheral Artery Disease in Diabetic Patients: A Questionnaire Survey from Vascular Centers of the Mediterranean Federation for the Advanci…

2020

Background The Mediterranean Federation for the Advancing of Vascular Surgery (MeFAVS) was founded on October 1, 2018, to enhance cooperation among vascular professionals within Mediterranean countries. Due to its prominent social and economic impact on national health systems, diabetic arteriopathy has been selected as the very first topic to be investigated by the federation. Methods MeFAVS members were asked to reply to a questionnaire on the management of diabetic ischemic foot. Results were collected and analyzed statistically. The questionnaire consisted of 15 multiple choice answers regarding diabetic foot (DF) diagnosis and treatment. The questionnaire was submitted to 21 centers on…

Increased fascicle length but not patellar tendon stiffness after accentuated eccentric-load strength training in already-trained men

2020

Purpose This study examined whether additional external load during the eccentric phase of lower limb strength training exercises led to greater adaptations in knee extensor strength, muscle architecture, and patellar tendon properties than traditional concentric–eccentric training in already-trained men. Methods Twenty-eight men accustomed to strength training were randomized to undertake 10 weeks of supervised traditional (TRAD) or accentuated eccentric loading (AEL) or continue their habitual unsupervised (CON) strength training. TRAD and AEL trained 2∙week−1 with a six-repetition maximum (RM) session and a ten-RM session. TRAD used the same external load in both concentric and eccentric…

The Light Side of Passwords : Turning Motivation from the Extrinsic to the Intrinsic

2019

There are many good and bad aspects to password authentication. They are mostly without cost, securing many accounts and systems, and allowing users access from anywhere in the world. However, passwords can elicit dark side phenomena, including security technostress; with many users feeling negatively towards them, as they struggle to cope with the sheer numbers required in their everyday lives. Much research has attempted to understand users’ interactions with passwords, examining the trade-off between security, memorability, user convenience, and suggesting techniques to manage them better. However, users continue to struggle. Many studies have shown that users are more concerned with goa…

Fitness, body composition and blood lipids following three concurrent strength and endurance training modes

2016

This study investigated changes in physical fitness, body composition, and blood lipid profile following 24 weeks of 3 volume-equated concurrent strength and endurance training protocols. Physically active, healthy male and female participants (aged 18–40 years) performed strength and endurance sessions on different days (DD; men, n = 21; women, n = 18) or in the same session with endurance preceding strength (ES; men, n = 16; women, n = 15) or vice versa (SE; men, n = 18; women, n = 14). The training volume was matched in all groups. Maximal leg press strength (1-repetition maximum (1RM)) and endurance performance (maximal oxygen consumption during cycling), body composition (dual-energy X…

Dietary intake and strength training adaptation in 50-70 -year old men and women : with special reference to muscle mass, strength, serum anabolic ho…

2007

Frailty has been defined as an age-related decrease of the physiologic systems that results in weakness, weight loss and decreased functional performance, thus increasing the risk of disability. The physical characteristics of frailty are affected by the amount of muscle mass and strength. Strength training (ST) can alleviate age-related declines in muscle mass, strength and physical function. However, there is controversy regarding whether dietary intake can improve the effects of ST. The present thesis assessed the effects of dietary intake (DI) on muscular, hormonal and metabolic adaptations to ST in healthy 50-70 year old people. In cross-sectional study I, maximal strength of the leg e…

Leisure activities and well-being in midlife and older age with special reference to physical activity and resistance training

2019

Participation in leisure activities is related to better well-being. Participation in leisure time physical activity also has several positive effects on functional capacity and health. Notwithstanding, only a minor proportion of adults, including older adults, participate in physical activity at a sufficient level for maintaining or improving their health. This study investigated both cross- sectional and longitudinal associations between different types of leisure and physical activities and well-being. This dissertation is based on data from three research projects: the Finland 2014 – Consumption and Lifestyle postal survey, conducted with a random sample representative of the Finnish ad…
