Picturing Dorian Gray: Portrait of an Adaptation
2016
‘Strange old Italian dresses’: Walter Pater, Victorian fashionista?
2019
This article discusses Aesthetic dress as conceived by Walter Pater. Indeed in “Leonardo Da Vinci” (1869), the unfinished Gaston de Latour (1888-1894?), “The School of Giorgione” (1877) and “A Prince of Court Painters” (1885), Pater mentions and describes dress with special emphasis on details. Such descriptions belong to a series of writings on Aesthetic dress, admittedly a core component of British Aestheticism. Pater’s descriptions should therefore be contrasted to the 1870s portraits of Whistler, and to the 1880s-1890s writings of Whistler, Oscar Wilde and Max Beerbohm, along with the caricatures of Aesthetes by George du Maurier and Sir Leslie Ward. Pater responds by progressively deli…

L’artisan, son comptable et sa retraite. Etude d’un profil d’indépendants établis
2017

This doctoral thesis combines historical and communication approaches, focusing on how old age is portrayed in contemporary French society. Whether through the analysis of political speeches, commercials, or by studying cinematic and literary characters, we discover that there is a consistent approach in the portrayal of old age. This doctoral research demonstrates why these portrayals result in an historical evolution, in an ideology of « youthism », as well as reflecting current society’s views. The assumption elaborated in this paper is that Western society conceals old age, which it deems unpleasant to look at, and which is therefore hidden from the general public. In doing so, millions…
Contribution to the study of interaction between residual stress and oxygen diffusion in a deformable and reactive solid
2011
The aim of this PhD work is to highlight the interactions between the mechanical stress and the chemical composition within diffusion of matter process for a reactive solid. The chronological evolution of our work goes from a parametric numerical study to an experimental study and reveals the role of mechanical stresses on the oxygen diffusion process.Different origins of mechanical stress were first numerically analysed from the point of view of their impacts on the process of oxygen diffusion into a metal (Zr) or a ceramic (UO2) subjected to an oxidizing environment. This approach allowed us: to identify a surface treatment (shot-peening) able to generate a residual specific stress field,…
La sous-traitance de la messagerie urbaine : logiques économiques et rapports de dépendance
2014
Subcontracting is a common practice in road transport, especially in parcel transport operations. Parcel transport is defined as the collection and distribution of shipments of less than three tons. Deliveries and pick-up rounds in urban areas present some specificities (such as difficult traffic and parking situations) which contribute in the high the use of subcontracting within the parcel transport sector. Sub-contracting allows parcel carriers to minimize the costs of urban trips and to provide a flexible and cost-efficient service to shippers. We analyzed a 2012 'carriers' survey done in the Paris region as well as an earlier survey made in the Lyon region. We also interviewed several …
Characterisation of mechanical behavior of a sub surface drilled polymer, under hertzian contact load
2013
This research concerns the understanding of the sub-surface behaviour of a component presenting controlled heterogeneities and subjected to a Hertzian type load. The purpose is to qualify the stress field in the subsurface. Practically, defects of cylindrical shape are located where the stress field is maximal in sub surface. The contact is sized to be able to observe, by photoelasticity, the stress field and to develop a numerical model to simulate the behaviour (static and dynamic) of the friction area. It is highlighted that the presence of a hole on the z axis of symmetry (x = 0) is the dominating factor. The characteristics which allow decreasing the shearing stress on the symmetry axi…

Many practical tasks in industry, such as automatic inspection or robot vision, often require scanning of three-dimensional shapes with non-contact techniques. However, transparent objects, such as those made of glass, still pose difficulties for classical scanning techniques. The reconstruction of surface geometry for transparent objects is complicated by the fact that light is transmitted through, refracted and in some cases reflected by the surface. Current approaches can only deal relatively well with sub-classes of objects. The algorithms are still very specific and not generally applicable. Furthermore, many techniques require considerable acquisition effort and careful calibration. T…
