Respiratory Muscle Strengths and Their Association with Lean Mass and Handgrip Strengths in Older Institutionalized Individuals

2020

The study of reduced respiratory muscle strengths in relation to the loss of muscular function associated with ageing is of great interest in the study of sarcopenia in older institutionalized individuals. The present study assesses the association between respiratory muscle parameters and skeletal mass content and strength, and analyzes associations with blood cell counts and biochemical parameters related to protein, lipid, glucose and ion profiles. A multicenter cross-sectional study was performed among patients institutionalized in nursing homes. The respiratory muscle function was evaluated by peak expiratory flow, maximal respiratory pressures and spirometry parameters, and skeletal m…

Effects of propanil on the European eel Anguilla anguilla and post-exposure recovery using selected biomarkers as effect criteria

2008

Abstract The aim of this study was to assess the physiological response of Anguilla anguilla to propanil and the degree of recovery after being moved to clean water. Preliminary acute toxicity test was carried out in the laboratory and the median lethal concentration (LC50) at 96 h was calculated as 31.33 mg/L (29.60–33.59 mg/L). NOEC and LOEC values (at 96 h) were also calculated as 20 and 25 mg/L, respectively. The fish were exposed to 0.63 and 3.16 mg/L of propanil for 72 h and allowed to recover for 144 h. Total proteins (TPs), γ -glutamil transpeptidase ( γ -GT), alanin aminotransferase (AlAT), alkaline phosphatase (AP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and water content (WC) were assayed i…

Results of the TOP Study: Prospectively Randomized Multicenter Trial of an Ex Vivo Tacrolimus Rinse Before Transplantation in EDC Livers

2016

Background. Organ shortage results in the transplantation of extended donor criteria (EDC) livers which is associated with increased ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). Experimental studies indicate that an organ rinse with the calcineurin inhibitor tacrolimus before implantation protects against IRI. The tacrolimus organ perfusion study was initiated to examine the effects of ex vivo tacrolimus perfusion on IRI in transplantation of EDC livers. Methods. A prospective randomized multicenter trial comparing ex vivo perfusion of marginal liver grafts (>= 2 EDC according to Eurotransplant manual) with tacrolimus (20 ng/mL) or histidine-tryptophane-ketoglutarate solution (control) was carried ou…

Effects of Pulp and Paper Mill Effluent (BKME) on Physiology and Biochemistry of the Roach (Rutilus rutilus L.)

1996

The effects of bleached kraft pulp and paper mill effluent (BKME) on the roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) were studied under experimental and natural field conditions. In the acute experiment (72 h exposure to the concentrated BKME), the roach suffered from a general stress syndrome, characterized by a significant increase of cortisol and blood glucose, as well as a significant decrease of leucocrit and total plasma protein. In three weeks' exposure in a polluted and an unpolluted lake and in fish caught from the same lakes, the more specific effects of BKME treatments appeared. During the three weeks' exposure, slight hyperglycaemia as well as a decrease in a transaminase activity (GPT) and incr…

Messung der gesamtaktivität von glutamat-oxalacetat-transaminase in leberhomogenaten

1971

Abstract A method is described, suitable for routine measurements of the total glutamicoxaloacetic transaminase activity in a large number of liver samples by treatment of homogenates with the detergent Triton X-100. Comparison with other methods and with results of other investigators shows that this method is superior. Neither sonic treatment nor freezing and thawing leads to a complete liberation of the mitochondrial transaminase activity. A number of other enzyme activities can be assayed in Triton-treated homogenates, such as glutamic-pyruvic transaminase, glutamate dehydrogenase, NADP-isocitric dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, and malate dehy drogenase, β-Hydroxybutyrate dehydrog…

Analysis of kynurenine transaminase activity in Drosophila by high performance liquid chromatography

1991

Abstract A sensitive assay for kynurenine transaminase activity (E.C. 2.6.1.7) based on rapid separation of the reaction product by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has been developed. Drosophila sordidula extracts have been assayed by this new method and this is the first time that kynurenine transaminase activity has been demonstrated in Drosophila . The method of assay developed can be extended to any other organism. Kynurenine and 3-hydroxykynurenine were both used as substrates, and they were transaminated to kynurenic acid and xanthruenic acid, respectively. HPLC is used to separate and quantitate these reaction products from all other components in the reaction mixture. …

Biosynthesis of xanthurenic acid 8-O-beta-D-glucoside in Drosophila. Characterization of the xanthurenic acid:UDP-glucosyltransferase activity.

1990

Xanthurenic acid 8-glucoside is a side metabolite of the tryptophan-xanthommatin pathway in Drosophila. From 3-hydroxykynurenine, two biosynthetic pathways can be envisaged, one via xanthurenic acid, and another via 3-O-glucoside of 3-hydroxykynurenine. In this report evidence is presented to show that the synthesis takes place via xanthurenic acid. (a) We have demonstrated that the Drosophila melanogaster vermilion purple mutant (unable to synthesize 3-hydroxykynurenine) synthesizes xanthurenic acid 8-glucoside when fed with xanthurenic acid; and (b) the activities required for its synthesis via xanthurenic acid have been found (3-hydroxykynurenine transaminase and xanthurenic acid:UDP-glu…
