Early science learning with a virtual tutor through multimedia explanations and feedback on spoken questions

The purpose of this pilot study with a within-subject design was to gain a deeper understanding about the promise and restrictions of a virtual tutoring system designed to teach science to first grade students in Finland. Participants were 61 students who received six tutoring science sessions of approximately 20 min each. Sessions consisted of a sequence of narrated multimedia science presentations during which a virtual tutor explained science phenomena displayed in pictures. Chardonnay wine malolactic fermentations were carried out to evaluate the chemical transfers occurring at the wood/wine interface in the presence of two different bacterial lifestyles. To do this, Oenococcus oeni was inoculated into must and wine in its planktonic and biofilm lifestyles, whether adhering or not to oak chips, leading to three distinct enological conditions: (i) post-alcoholic fermentation inoculation in wine in the absence of oak chips, (ii) post-alcoholic fermentation inoculation in wine in the presence of oak chips, and (iii) co-inoculation of both Saccharomyces cerevisiae and O. oeni directly in Chardonnay musts in the presence of oak chips. Solar radiative effects of a Saharan dust plume observed during SAMUM assuming spheroidal model particles

The solar optical properties of Saharan mineral dust observed during the Saharan Mineral Dust Experiment (SAMUM) were explored based on measured size-number distributions and chemical composition. The size-resolved complex refractive index of the dust was derived with real parts of 1.51–1.55 and imaginary parts of 0.0008–0.006 at 550 nm wavelength. At this spectral range a single scattering albedo ω o and an asymmetry parameter g of about 0.8 were derived. These values were largely determined by the presence of coarse particles. Backscatter coefficients and lidar ratios calculated with Mie theory (spherical particles) were not found to be in agreement with independently measured lidar data.…

Tutkimuksen tarkoitus oli kartoittaa sanaston siirtovaikutusta suomenkielisten yläkoululaisten B-ruotsin kirjoitelmissa. Tarkoitus oli saada vastaus siihen, kuinka paljon suomen kielen ja englannin kielen sanoja koululaiset käyttävät opiskeltuaan ruotsia noin vuoden verran. Lisäksi halusin selvittää kuinka paljon kirjoitelman aihe vaikuttaa sanavarastoon. Tutkimus oli määrällinen ja vertasi kahta aiheeltaan erilaista kirjoitustehtävää. 48 B-ruotsia lukevan 8-luokkalaisen yläkoululaisen kirjoitelmat on kerätty Jyväskylän yliopiston Topling-projektia varten syksyllä 2010. Carbon Dioxide Activation and Reaction Induced by Electron Transfer at an Oxide-Metal Interface

A model system has been created to shuttle electrons through a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure to induce the formation of a CO2 anion radical from adsorbed gas-phase carbon dioxide that subsequently reacts to form an oxalate species. The process is completely reversible, and thus allows the elementary steps involved to be studied at the atomic level. The oxalate species at the MIM interface have been identified locally by scanning tunneling microscopy, chemically by IR spectroscopy, and their formation verified by density functional calculations.

[N,N-bis(1-methyl-2-benzimidazolyl)methyl-N-(bis-2-pyridylmethyl)amine] ( L 1 ) and [N,N-bis(2-quinolylmethyl)-N-bis(2-pyridyl)methylamine] ( L 2 ) were employed to prepare Cu II and Cu I complexes for spectroscopic and structural characterization. [ L 1 Cu II (H 2 O)](NO 3 ) 2 and [ L 2 Cu II (NO 3 )]NO 3 have Jahn-Teller distorted octahedral geometries, and give rise to isotropic EPR spectra in frozen solution. Epigenetic siRNA and Chemical Screens Identify SETD8 Inhibition as a Therapeutic Strategy for p53 Activation in High-Risk Neuroblastoma

Given the paucity of druggable mutations in high-risk neuroblastoma (NB), we undertook chromatin-focused small interfering RNA and chemical screens to uncover epigenetic regulators critical for the differentiation block in high-risk NB. High-content Opera imaging identified 53 genes whose loss of expression led to a decrease in NB cell proliferation and 16 also induced differentiation. From these, the secondary chemical screen identified SETD8, the H4K20me1 methyltransferase, as a druggable NB target. Functional studies revealed that SETD8 ablation rescued the pro-apoptotic and cell-cycle arrest functions of p53 by decreasing p53K382me1, leading to activation of the p53 canonical pathway. I…

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest określenie przyczyn zmiany przynależności klubowej w Sejmie w latach 2001-2015. Pod pojęciem „transferu” rozumiane są wszelkie zmiany przynależności klubowej mające miejsce w trakcie kadencji Sejmu, takie jak: rozłamy, odejścia, przejścia. Transfery takie mogą istotnie zmienić układ sil wewnątrz parlamentu ukształtowany w wyborach. Intencją autora jest wskazanie przyczyn tego zjawiska w Sejmie oraz jego kategoryzacja. Dokonana analiza pokazuje zasadnicze metodologiczne trudności z określeniem obiektywnych przyczyn transferów. Najczęściej wskazuje się różnice ideowo-programowe, jednakże analiza uwarunkowań, w których transfery się dokonują sugeruje, że często …
