Abstract This study was designed to examine whether the depletion of l -carnitine may induce compensatory mechanisms allowing higher fatty acid oxidative activities in liver, particularly with regard to mitochondrial carnitine palmitoyltransferase I activity and peroxisomal fatty acid oxidation. Wistar rats received d -carnitine for 2 days and 3-(2,2,2-trimethylhydrazinium)propionate (mildronate), a non-competitive inhibitor of γ-butyrobetaine hydroxylase, for 10 days. They were starved for 20 hr before being sacrificed. A dramatic reduction in carnitine concentration was observed in heart, skeletal muscles and kidneys, and to a lesser extent, in liver. E stato determinato il rapporto tra forma «piridossalica» e forma «piridossaminica» dell'aspartato aminotransferasi nell'encefalo totale di ratti albini durante l'ipoglicemia da insulina e l'iperglicemia da allossana. Il rapporto tra le due forme catalitiche dell'enzima e stato considerato un indice dell'efficienza del ciclo degli acidi tricarbossilici, ed e stata prospettata la possibilita che l'aspartato aminotransferasi abbia una funzione regolativa nei riguardi del ciclo.

Involvement of plasmalogens in post-natal retinal vascular development

Objective: Proper development of retinal blood vessels is essential to ensure sufficient oxygen and nutrient supplies to the retina. It was shown that polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) could modulate factors involved in tissue vascularization. A congenital deficiency in ether-phospholipids, also termed "plasmalogens'', was shown to lead to abnormal ocular vascularization. The G428A Nonsense Mutation in FUT2 Provides Strong but Not Absolute Protection against Symptomatic GII.4 Norovirus Infection

In November 2004, 116 individuals in an elderly nursing home in El Grao de Castellón, Spain were symptomatically infected with genogroup II.4 (GII.4) norovirus. The global attack rate was 54.2%. Genotyping of 34 symptomatic individuals regarding the FUT2 gene revealed that one patient was, surprisingly, a non-secretor, hence indicating secretor-independent infection. Lewis genotyping revealed that Lewis-positive and negative individuals were susceptible to symptomatic norovirus infection indicating that Lewis status did not predict susceptibility. The DNA repair protein O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) removes alkyl groups from the O6 position of guanine in DNA and thus may protect cells against genotoxic effects of agents inducing this lesion. Characterization of cryopreserved rat liver parenchymal cells by metabolism of diagnostic substrates and activities of related enzymes

The metabolism of testosterone and benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) which is mediated by diverse enzymes was determined in cryopreserved rat liver parenchymal cells and compared with that found in freshly isolated cells. In addition, the activities of single xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes were measured by using specific substrates. The cytochrome P450 (P450)-mediated total metabolic conversion of testosterone was reduced to 55% in cryopreserved cells.
