On fixed points of the Burrows-Wheeler transform

The Burrows-Wheeler Transform is a well known transformation widely used in Data Compression: important competitive compression software, such as Bzip (cf. [1]) and Szip (cf. [2]) and some indexing software, like the FM-index (cf. [3]), are deeply based on the Burrows Wheeler Transform. The main advantage of using BWT for data compression consists in its feature of "clustering" together equal characters. A bijection between words and multisets of necklaces

Two of the present authors have given in 1993 a bijection Phi between words on a totally ordered alphabet and multisets of primitive necklaces. At the same time and independently, Burrows and Wheeler gave a data compression algorithm which turns out to be a particular case of the inverse of Phi. In the present article, we show that if one replaces in Phi the standard permutation of a word by the co-standard one (reading the word from right to left), then the inverse bijection is computed using the alternate lexicographic order (which is the order of real numbers given by continued fractions) on necklaces, instead of the lexicographic order as for Phi(-1). Dimensions of random affine code tree fractals

We calculate the almost sure Hausdorff dimension for a general class of random affine planar code tree fractals. The set of probability measures describing the randomness includes natural measures in random $V$-variable and homogeneous Markov constructions.

Derived categories of irreducible projective curves of arithmetic genus one

We investigate the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on irreducible singular projective curves of arithmetic genus one. A description of the group of exact auto-equivalences and the set of all $t$ -structures of this category is given. We describe the moduli space of stability conditions, obtain a complete classification of all spherical objects in this category and show that the group of exact auto-equivalences acts transitively on them. Harder–Narasimhan filtrations in the sense of Bridgeland are used as our main technical tool.

On the computational power of affine automata

We investigate the computational power of affine automata (AfAs) introduced in [4]. In particular, we present a simpler proof for how to change the cutpoint for any affine language and a method how to reduce error in bounded error case. Moreover, we address to the question of [4] by showing that any affine language can be recognized by an AfA with certain limitation on the entries of affine states and transition matrices. Lastly, we present the first languages shown to be not recognized by AfAs with bounded-error.

Abstract The Burrows-Wheeler Transform (BWT) is a word transformation introduced in 1994 for Data Compression. It has become a fundamental tool for designing self-indexing data structures, with important applications in several areas in science and engineering. The Alternating Burrows-Wheeler Transform (ABWT) is another transformation recently introduced in Gessel et al. (2012) [21] and studied in the field of Combinatorics on Words. On a Conjecture by Christian Choffrut

It is one of the most famous open problems to determine the minimum amount of states required by a deterministic finite automaton to distinguish a pair of strings, which was stated by Christian Choffrut more than thirty years ago. We investigate the same question for different automata models and we obtain new upper and lower bounds for some of them including alternating, ultrametric, quantum, and affine finite automata.

Affine Automata Verifiers

We initiate the study of the verification power of Affine finite automata (AfA) as a part of Arthur-Merlin (AM) proof systems. We show that every unary language is verified by a real-valued AfA verifier. Then, we focus on the verifiers restricted to have only integer-valued or rational-valued transitions. We observe that rational-valued verifiers can be simulated by integer-valued verifiers, and their protocols can be simulated in nondeterministic polynomial time. We show that this upper bound is tight by presenting an AfA verifier for NP-complete problem SUBSETSUM. We also show that AfAs can verify certain non-affine and non-stochastic unary languages.

Balancing and clustering of words in the Burrows–Wheeler transform

AbstractCompression algorithms based on Burrows–Wheeler transform (BWT) take advantage of the fact that the word output of BWT shows a local similarity and then turns out to be highly compressible. The aim of the present paper is to study such “clustering effect” by using notions and methods from Combinatorics on Words.The notion of balance of a word plays a central role in our investigation. Empirical observations suggest that balance is actually the combinatorial property of input word that ensure optimal BWT compression. Moreover, it is reasonable to assume that the more balanced the input word is, the more local similarity we have after BWT (and therefore the better the compression is).…

SCHUR MULTIPLIERS AND SPHERICAL FUNCTIONS ON HOMOGENEOUS TREES

Let X be a homogeneous tree of degree q + 1 (2 ≤ q ≤ ∞) and let ψ : X × X → ℂ be a function for which ψ(x, y) only depends on the distance between x, y ∈ X. Our main result gives a necessary and sufficient condition for such a function to be a Schur multiplier on X × X. Moreover, we find a closed expression for the Schur norm ||ψ||S of ψ. As applications, we obtaina closed expression for the completely bounded Fourier multiplier norm ||⋅||M0A(G) of the radial functions on the free (non-abelian) group 𝔽N on N generators (2 ≤ N ≤ ∞) and of the spherical functions on the q-adic group PGL2(ℚq) for every prime number q.
