Oral leukoplakia, a clinical-histopathological study in 412 patients

2020

Background A retrospective clinical-histopathological study was made of the evolution of oral leukoplakia over time, staging the disease according to the classification of van der Waal. Material and Methods A study was made of 412 patients with oral leukoplakia, analyzing the corresponding clinical factors and histopathological findings; assessing associations between the different clinical presentations and epithelial dysplasia; and evaluating the factors influencing malignant transformation of the lesions. Results Clinically, homogeneous presentations were seen to predominate (n = 336, 81.6%), while histologically most of the lesions exhibited no dysplastic changes (n = 271; 65.7%). Stage…

TGF-beta regulates airway responses via T cells.

2003

Abstract Allergic asthma is characterized by airway hyperreactivity, inflammation, and a Th2-type cytokine profile favoring IgE production. Beneficial effects of TGF-β and conflicting results regarding the role of Th1 cytokines have been reported from murine asthma models. In this study, we examined the T cell as a target cell of TGF-β-mediated immune regulation in a mouse model of asthma. We demonstrate that impairment of TGF-β signaling in T cells of transgenic mice expressing a dominant-negative TGF-β type II receptor leads to a decrease in airway reactivity in a non-Ag-dependent model. Increased serum levels of IFN-γ can be detected in these animals. In contrast, after injection of OVA …

Antibodies against homogeneous epoxide hydratase provide evidence for a single enzyme hydrating styrene oxide and benz(a)pyrene 4,5-oxide

1976

THE microsomal enzyme epoxide hydratase (EC 4.2.1.63) is potentially important in the inactivation of metabolically produced epoxides which may be responsible for the mutagenic and/or carcinogenic properties of polycyclic hydrocarbons (for reviews see refs 1–3). Reports4,5 suggest that the enzyme plays a dual role in (a) producing proximate carcinogens which, after biotransformation to carcinogens by microsomal mono-oxygenase(s) are (b) inactivated by epoxide hydratase. As this enzyme can be induced6–8, activated9–10 and inhibited9–13 it should be useful in studies of the mechanism of chemical carcinogenesis: some inverse correlations have been reported between susceptibility to carcinogene…

The telltale structures of epoxide hydrolases.

2003

Traditionally, epoxide hydrolases (EH) have been regarded as xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes implicated in the detoxification of foreign compounds. They are known to play a key role in the control of potentially genotoxic epoxides that arise during metabolism of many lipophilic compounds. Although this is apparently the main function for the mammalian microsomal epoxide hydrolase (mEH), evidence is now accumulating that the mammalian soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH), despite its proven role in xenobiotic metabolism, also has a central role in the formation and breakdown of physiological signaling molecules. In addition, a certain class of microbial epoxide hydrolases has recently been identi…

Characterisation of electric alloys for electric drives

1996

Knowledge of the magnetic and loss charactenstics of electric alloys is necessary for the computation and design of electrical machines. Over a long period of time, and more recently, many devices have been proposed for this characterisation. They test ferromagnetic sheets under conditions of unidirectional magnetic flux density. Other methods are derived from some of these devices, but they use conditions of rotating flux density. In the paper the authors show with the use of numerical computation that, in all these testing systems, the distribution of the magnetic flux density through the thickness of the sheet is uniform and does not take into account the edge effect which exists in rota…

Logarithmic Equal-Letter Runs for BWT of Purely Morphic Words

2022

In this paper we study the number r(bwt) of equal-letter runs produced by the Burrows-Wheeler transform (BWT) when it is applied to purely morphic finite words, which are words generated by iterating prolongable morphisms. Such a parameter r(bwt) is very significant since it provides a measure of the performances of the BWT, in terms of both compressibility and indexing. In particular, we prove that, when BWT is applied to whichever purely morphic finite word on a binary alphabet, r(bwt) is O(log n), where n is the length of the word. Moreover, we prove that r(bwt) is Theta(log n) for the binary words generated by a large class of prolongable binary morphisms. These bounds are proved by pro…

High-pressure structural and elastic properties of Tl2O3

2014

The structural properties of Thallium (III) oxide (Tl2O3) have been studied both experimentally and theoretically under compression at room temperature. X-ray powder diffraction measurements up to 37.7 GPa have been complemented with ab initio total-energy calculations. The equation of state of Tl2O3 has been determined and compared to related compounds. It has been found experimentally that Tl2O3 remains in its initial cubic bixbyite-type structure up to 22.0 GPa. At this pressure, the onset of amorphization is observed, being the sample fully amorphous at 25.2 GPa. The sample retains the amorphous state after pressure release. To understand the pressure-induced amorphization process, we h…

First-order linear differential equations whose data are complex random variables: Probabilistic solution and stability analysis via densities

2022

[EN] Random initial value problems to non-homogeneous first-order linear differential equations with complex coefficients are probabilistically solved by computing the first probability density of the solution. For the sake of generality, coefficients and initial condition are assumed to be absolutely continuous complex random variables with an arbitrary joint probability density function. The probability of stability, as well as the density of the equilibrium point, are explicitly determined. The Random Variable Transformation technique is extensively utilized to conduct the overall analysis. Several examples are included to illustrate all the theoretical findings.

Varieties of agencies during working life changes

2020

The aim of this study is to shed light on the varieties of workers´ agencies in working life change situations, which is an under-researched topic in the literature of workplace learning and in working life studies. The research questions are what kinds of agencies there are to be found when workers encounter changes and how the different kinds of agencies are connected together. The understanding of agency is grounded on the subject-centered socio-cultural approach, whereas the methodological approach is based on applying life-course perspective on research material consisting of 48 working life narratives written by Finnish adults. The narratives are analyzed by abductive content analysis…
