Transforming growth factor-β1, β2, and β3, urokinase and parathyroid hormone-related peptide expression in 8701-BC breast cancer cells and clones
1993
8701-BC is a recently characterized cell line isolated from a primary ductal infiltrating carcinoma of the breast (d.i.c.), showing some pleomorphism in cell microanatomy at an ultrastructural level. We have obtained different sublines of 8701-BC cells by cloning in soft agar at different concentrations (0.3% and 0.6%), and we have characterized the cloned lines by some morphological and growth parameters. 8701-BC cells and clones have been submitted to analysis by reverse transcriptase-linked polymerase chain reaction to detect mRNAs of various cytokines (transforming growth factor-beta s, tumour necrosis factors, interleukin 1s, interleukin 6, parathyroid hormone-related peptide, gamma in…
Quasi-Stationary Distribution and Gibbs Measure of Expanding Systems
1996
Let T be an expanding transformation defined on A —(J A{, i= 1being a finite collection of connected open bounded subsets of 2Rn,such that T Acontains strictly Aand Tis Markovian. We prove the existence of a quasi-stationary distrition for T. We show that the T-invariant probability on the limit Cantor set is Gibbsian with potential Log|_DT|. Using the Hilbert projective metric we prove that both distributions are weak limits of conditional laws of probabilities, the speed of convergence being exponential. These results develop a previous work by G. Pianigiani and J.A. Yorke.
The mixed capacitated general routing problem with turn penalties
2011
In this paper we deal with the mixed capacitated general routing problem with turn penalties. This problem generalizes many important arc and node routing problems, and it takes into account turn penalties and forbidden turns, which are crucial in many real-life applications, such as mail delivery, waste collection and street maintenance operations. Through a polynomial transformation of the considered problem into a Generalized Vehicle routing problem, we suggest a new approach for solving this new problem by transforming it into an Asymmetric Capacitated Vehicle routing problem. In this way, we can solve the new problem both optimally and heuristically using existing algorithms. A powerfu…
Power-Line Communication in Medium-Voltage System: Simulation Model and Onfield Experimental Tests
2012
The aim of this paper is to develop a complete model of a power-line communication (PLC) system operating on a medium-voltage (MV) network. The core-shield configuration was chosen for signal transmission in the power cables. In order to validate the developed model experimental, the medium-voltage network of the Favignana island was used to carry out detailed testing. The transmission was performed between two transformer substations in the presence of mains voltage (i.e., 24 kV). ST7540 FSK power-line transceivers, together with capacitive coupling interfaces, were used for the transmission and the reception of the communication signal. The correlation between the experimental measurement…
Drying enhances immunoactivity of spent brewer's yeast cell wall β-D-glucans.
2015
Due to immunological activity, microbial cell wall polysaccharides are defined as 'biological response modifiers' (BRM). Cell walls of spent brewer's yeast also have some BRM activity. However, up to date there is no consensus on the use of spent brewer's yeast D-glucan as specific BRM in humans or animals. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the potential of spent brewer's yeast β-D-glucans as BRM, and drying as an efficient pretreatment to increase β-D-glucan's immunogenic activity. Our results revealed that drying does not change spent brewer's yeast biomass carbohydrate content as well as the chemical structure of purified β-D-glucan. However, drying increased purified β-D-glucan TN…
Evaluation of nutritional parameters in infant formulas and powdered milk by Raman spectroscopy
2007
It has been made a critical evaluation of the application of near infrared Fourier transform-Raman spectroscopy for the simultaneous determination of the most important nutritional parameters such as energetic value, carbohydrate, protein and fat contents of infant formula and powdered milk samples based on the use of partial least squares (PLS) regression analysis. A highly heterogeneous population of 23 samples, covering a wide range of infant food formula and powdered milk, were obtained from the Spanish market. Raman spectra, obtained by excitation with a Nd:YAG laser at 1064 nm, show no disturbing fluorescence effects; therefore sample spectra can be recorded without any previous prepa…
Influence of krypton atoms on the structure of amorphous hydrogenated carbon deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition
2010
Hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films were prepared by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition using methane (CH4 ) plus krypton (Kr) mixed atmosphere. The depositions were performed as function of the bias voltage and krypton partial pressure. The goal of this work was to study the influence of krypton gas on the physical properties of a-C:H films deposited on the cathode electrode. Krypton concentration up to 1.6 at. %, determined by Rutherford Back-Scattering, was obtained at high Kr partial pressure and bias of -120 V. The structure of the films was analyzed by means of optical transmission spectroscopy, multi-wavelength Raman scattering and Fourier Transform Infrared spectrosco…

Cytotoxic effects and degradation products of three mycotoxins: Alternariol, 3-acetyl-deoxynivalenol and 15-acetyl-deoxynivalenol in liver hepatocell…
2015
This work is focused in studying the cytotoxic effects on HepG2 cells of the mycotoxins alternariol (AOH), 3-acetyl-deoxynivalenol (3-ADON) and 15-acetyl-deoxynivalenol (15-ADON) by the MTT assay, as well as in the identification of the degradation products and/or metabolites originated after treatment by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) equipment and extracted from culture media. HepG2 cells were treated at different concentrations over 24, 48 and 72 h. The IC50 values were from 65 to 96 μM, from 3.6 to 6.2 μM and from 5.2 to 8.1 μM for AOH, 3-ADON and 15-ADON, respectively. Among all three mycotoxins assayed, deoxynivalenol (DON) derivated presented the highest to…
Loss of response of carnitine palmitoyltransferase I to okadaic acid in transformed hepatic cells
1998
The specific activity of carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (CPT-I) was similar in mitochondria isolated from rat Fao and human HepG2 hepatoma cells and from rat hepatocytes, but almost twofold higher in permeabilized hepatoma cells than in permeabilized hepatocytes. Short-term exposure to okadaic acid induced a ca. 80% stimulation of CPT-I in hepatocytes, whereas no significant response of the enzyme from hepatoma cells was evident. Thus, the high CPT-I activity displayed by hepatoma cells may be reached by hepatocytes upon challenge to okadaic acid. Reconstitution experiments with purified mitochondrial and cytoskeletal fractions showed that the cytoskeleton of hepatocytes produced a more r…
