Therapeutic implications of Cancer Initiating Cells.

2009

Background: Until few years ago, all neoplastic cells within a tumour were suggested to have tumorigenic capacity, but recent evidences hint to the possibility that such feature is confined to a subset of Cancer Initiating Cells (CICs), also called Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs). These cells are the reservoir of the heterogeneous populations of differentiated cancer cells constituting the tumour bulk. Mechanisms shared with somatic stem cells, such as quiescence, self-renewal ability, asymmetric division and multidrug resistance, allow to these cells to drive tumour growth and to evade conventional therapy. Objective: Here, we give a brief overview on the origin of CICs, the mechanisms involved i…

Family Transformation: The Case of the Textile and Clothing Industry Workers in Valencia / La transformación de la familia: el caso de los trabajador…

2014

The main goal of this article is to assess the infl uence of the individualisation process on working-class family relationships. This is a relevant analysis, bearing in mind the importance of the family in welfare provision in Spain and the transformative capacity that the individualisation process has had for the conception and management of family bonds; however, the main theoretical work which has dealt with this process to date has failed to address the working class. The in-depth interviews conducted with workers from the textile and clothing industry of the Valencian regions of l’Alcoia, Comtat and Vall d’Albaida led to the conclusion that their concept of family and care responsibil…

2015

Cohesion, reuse and transformation are key concepts of the project of sustainable regeneration of the built environment. They are also essential for the development and control of territory. In a perspective of sustainable regeneration also the transformation and reuse "creative" of depressed urban areas and abandoned buildings, are crucial for the protection of the environment and against the land consumption. For many years the sustainable regeneration is a key concept of Community policies: "It is imperative to reuse urban areas unused, derelict or contaminated. Today these urban areas are in excess of any other period of the industrial urban history. The reuse of land and abandoned buil…

Decreased temperature increases the expression of a disordered bacterial late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) protein that enhances natural transformati…

2021

Late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins are important players in the management of responses to stressful conditions, such as drought, high salinity, and changes in temperature. Many LEA proteins do not have defined three-dimensional structures, so they are intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) and are often highly hydrophilic. Although LEA-like sequences have been identified in bacterial genomes, the functions of bacterial LEA proteins have been studied only recently. Sequence analysis of outer membrane interleukin receptor I (BilRI) from the oral pathogen Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans indicated that it shared sequence similarity with group 3/3b/4 LEA proteins. Comprehensive …

Distributed pedagogical leadership in support of student transitions

2012

This article examines how, through uncovering collaborative leadership, the whole school staff is able to understand its common endeavours to support heterogeneous students’ fluent learning paths. For this, a notion of distributed pedagogical leadership (DPL) is drawn upon. DPL concerns everyone in the school community, not only leaders and management. It means abandoning role, instrumental or process centricity and moving towards leadership that is characterized as the innermost qualities of a professional learning community. This kind of leadership is best described with 10 ‘keys’ as 10 key attributes. To understand DPL in practice, quantitative data both from a nationwide Finnish survey…

Search for supersymmetry in events with large missing transverse momentum, jets, and at least one tau lepton in 7 TeV proton-proton collision data wi…

2012

A search for supersymmetry (SUSY) in events with large missing transverse momentum, jets, and at least one hadronically decaying τ lepton, with zero or one additional light lepton (e/μ), has been performed using 4.7 fb[superscript −1] of proton-proton collision data at √s = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No excess above the Standard Model background expectation is observed and a 95 % confidence level visible cross-sectionupper limit for new phenomena is set. In the framework of gauge-mediated SUSY-breaking models, lower limits on the mass scale Λ are set at 54 TeV in the regions where the [bar over τ]1 is the next-to-lightest SUSY particle (tanβ > 20). …

A variant of Smurf2 protects mice against colitis-associated colon cancer by inducing transforming growth factor β signaling.

2011

Background & Aims Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β signaling, which is down-regulated by the E3 ubiquitin ligase Smad ubiquitin regulating factor 2 (Smurf2), promotes development of cancer. We identified a splice variant of Smurf2 (ΔE2Smurf2) and investigated its role in colon carcinogenesis in mice. Methods Colitis-associated colon cancer was induced in mice by administration of azoxymethane, followed by 3 cycles of oral administration of dextran sodium sulfate. Messenger RNA levels of Smurf2 in colon tumors and control tissue were measured by quantitative polymerase chain reaction; lymphocyte and cytokine levels were measured in tumor and tissue samples. Results Tumor-infiltrating CD4 +…
