Statics and dynamics of colloid-polymer mixtures near their critical point of phase separation: A computer simulation study of a continuous Asakura–O…

2008

We propose a new coarse-grained model for the description of liquid-vapor phase separation of colloid-polymer mixtures. The hard-sphere repulsion between colloids and between colloids and polymers, which is used in the well-known Asakura-Oosawa (AO) model, is replaced by Weeks-Chandler-Anderson potentials. Similarly, a soft potential of height comparable to thermal energy is used for the polymer-polymer interaction, rather than treating polymers as ideal gas particles. It is shown by grand-canonical Monte Carlo simulations that this model leads to a coexistence curve that almost coincides with that of the AO model and the Ising critical behavior of static quantities is reproduced. Then the …

Enhanced quantification of wollastonite and calcite in limestone using fluorescence correction based on continuous wavelet transformation for Raman

2020

Raman spectroscopy offers a nondestructive means to identify minerals in rocks, but the ability to use the technology for quantitative mineralogical analysis is limited by fluorescence that can mask the spectral features of minerals. In this paper we apply continuous wavelet transformation (CWT) to remove fluoresence from Raman data acquired from 26 carbonate rock samples. We then record the intensity values of individual spectral features, proxies for mineral abundances, using the original Raman data and the thus inferred CWT data. The intensity values are then compared against the known mineral abundances determined using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) technology. This comparison …

Elastic configurations of self-supported oxide membranes for fuel cells

2013

Abstract Ultra-thin oxide films are of interest in energy conversion technologies such as low temperature solid oxide fuel cells and permeation membranes. Understanding their thermo-mechanical stability is an important problem. Edge clamped, self-supported thin film membranes show hierarchical wrinkles; with the largest wavelengths in the center, while smaller ones arise near the clamped boundary; correspondingly the largest strains, with tensile stress comparable to the residual stress, are in the vicinity of the clamped boundary. Our results can be understood by simple scaling arguments and are valid for membranes in the post-buckling regime far from threshold. We confirm the validity of …

Exact analytic expressions for electromagnetic propagation and optical nonlinear generation in finite one-dimensional periodic multilayers.

2004

Translation Matrix Formalism has been used to find an exact analytic solution for linear light propagation in a finite one-dimensional (1D) periodic stratified structure. This modal approach allows to derive a closed formula for the electric field in every point of the structure, by simply imposing a convenient form for the boundary conditions. We show how to apply this result to Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) in the undepleted pump regime.

Towards a Theory of Life

2015

In this paper, I set out the contributions made by some European biologists, as well as other more heterodox ones, to the recent development of theoretical thinking in biology. Theoretical biology is a relatively new discipline when compared with theoretical physics, in part because the formal languages of logic and computing which it uses have only emerged recently. Finally, I suggest that in order to build a theory of life we need to combine a cell theory based on a proper description of the laws that map the genotype in the phenotype and vice versa with the laws of evolution. Only then will we be able to properly explain the transformation and complexity of living things.

A novel heuristics-based energy management system for a multi-carrier hub enriched with solid hydrogen storage

2014

In this paper, an efficient optimization algorithm for the energy management of a grid-connected energy hub plant is proposed. The Simulated Annealing algorithm is adopted for the solution of the energy management problem aiming at the profit maximization for the owner of the energy hub plant. The use of a heuristic algorithm was required by the non-linearity of the efficiencies of each component in the energy transformation stages. The proposed heuristics is applied to a large energy hub, corresponding to the simulation of the test-bed that is being designed and developed inside the ongoing INGRID European research project.

The Rural Postman Problem on mixed graphs with turn penalties

2002

In this paper we deal with a problem which generalizes the Rural Postman Problem defined on a mixed graph (MRPP). The generalization consists of associating a non-negative penalty to every turn as well as considering the existence of forbidden turns. This new problem fits real-world situations more closely than other simpler problems. A solution tour must traverse all the requiring service arcs and edges of the graph while not making forbidden turns. Its total cost will be the sum of the costs of the traversed arcs and edges together with the penalties associated with the turns done. The Mixed Rural Postman Problem with Turn Penalties (MRPPTP) consists of finding such a tour with a total mi…

Cut-First Branch-and-Price-Second for the Capacitated Arc-Routing Problem

2012

This paper presents the first full-fledged branch-and-price (bap) algorithm for the capacitated arc-routing problem (CARP). Prior exact solution techniques either rely on cutting planes or the transformation of the CARP into a node-routing problem. The drawbacks are either models with inherent symmetry, dense underlying networks, or a formulation where edge flows in a potential solution do not allow the reconstruction of unique CARP tours. The proposed algorithm circumvents all these drawbacks by taking the beneficial ingredients from existing CARP methods and combining them in a new way. The first step is the solution of the one-index formulation of the CARP in order to produce strong cut…

Deflation-Based FastICA With Adaptive Choices of Nonlinearities

2014

Deflation-based FastICA is a popular method for independent component analysis. In the standard deflation-base d approach the row vectors of the unmixing matrix are extracted one after another always using the same nonlinearities. In prac- tice the user has to choose the nonlinearities and the efficiency and robustness of the estimation procedure then strongly depends on this choice as well as on the order in which the components are extracted. In this paper we propose a novel adaptive two- stage deflation-based FastICA algorithm that (i) allows one to use different nonlinearities for different components and (ii) optimizes the order in which the components are extracted. Based on a consist…

Local Gauge Conditions for Ellipticity in Conformal Geometry

2013

In this article we introduce local gauge conditions under which many curvature tensors appearing in conformal geometry, such as the Weyl, Cotton, Bach, and Fefferman-Graham obstruction tensors, become elliptic operators. The gauge conditions amount to fixing an $n$-harmonic coordinate system and normalizing the determinant of the metric. We also give corresponding elliptic regularity results and characterizations of local conformal flatness in low regularity settings.
