Patterns of action transitions in online collaborative problem solving : A network analysis approach
2022
AbstractIn today’s digital society, computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) and collaborative problem solving (CPS) have received increasing attention. CPS studies have often emphasized outcomes such as skill levels of CPS, whereas the action transitions in the paths to solve the problems related to these outcomes have been scarcely studied. The patterns within action transitions are able to capture the mutual influence of actions conducted by pairs and demonstrate the productivity of students’ CPS. The purpose of the study presented in this paper is to examine Finnish sixth graders’ (N = 166) patterns of action transitions during CPS in a computer-based assessment environment in w…
Stability of social support during school transitions: Associations with truancy and not completing upper secondary education in normative time
2022
Not completing upper secondary education is often presignaled by truancy from school. Student-perceived social support from family, peers, and teachers can prevent truancy and the risk of not completing education. However, prior studies have not focused on the stability of social support across school transitions. This longitudinal study of 1901 Finnish students examined the extent to which social support was stable or specific to primary, lower secondary, and upper secondary schools. Moreover, we examined whether support was associated with not completing upper secondary education in normative time and whether truancy mediated the relationship between support and not completing education. …

EU Projects Going Virtual : The ONE Meeting Approach
2022
The ONE meeting approach aims to equip EU project managers and HE leadership with skills and competencies needed for making EU projects more efficient, greener and more sustainable. Our target groups can pick out what is relevant for them: The ONE Business Case provides evidence and offers tools to check the potential benefits for the environment; the ONE Virtual Toolkit offers a systematised collection of tools for virtual collaboration; and the ONE Guide presents a proof of concept and a step-by-step approach for switching to a ONE meeting only format. In the long run, we hope to impact project work on a regional, national and international level to become more sustainable and effective, …

Varieties of universalism : post-1990s developments in the initial school-based model of VET in Finland and Sweden and implications for transitions t…
2017
The Nordic countries are often referred to as a group even though their education systems and training models are very different. The aim of this study is to advance understanding of those differences and compare the developments and organisation of initial vocational education and training (IVET) in Finland and Sweden since the 1990s as examples of school-based models of IVET in statist regimes. The research questions address the following: how these two countries have institutionalised school-based IVET since the 1990s; the kinds of legislative reforms that have been decisive for the construction of school-based IVET; and how the models of school-based IVET in these two countries allow ac…
High Entropy Alloys for Energy Conversion and Storage: A Review of Grain Boundary Wetting Phenomena
2022
This research was funded by the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education (contract no. 075-15-2021-945 grant no. 13.2251.21.0013). Support from the University of the Basque Country (project GIU19/019) and from the Basque Government (project IT1714-22) is also acknowledged.
People power : the role of civil society in renewable energy production
2018
The engagement of civil society actors in energy generation can be defined by the term community energy. Community energy initiatives have increased in several countries. This thesis aims at better understanding how this phenomenon emerges and how it can contribute to the decarbonization of our economy. For this purpose, a multi-level perspective on socio-technical transitions and strategic niche management theory were employed as theoretical lenses. The research material consisted of 75 qualitative interviews, a survey of 26 distributed energy experts, and a panel data study of 66 large electric utilities from various countries. Thematic, narrative, regression and descriptive statistical a…
Kuvasta valoon : lavastettava valokuva menetelmänä turvallisuuden paikkakokemukseen
2015
Käsittelen tutkimuksessani itse kehittämäni lavastettavan valokuvan mahdollisuuksia taidekasvatusmenetelmänä. Menetelmälleni ominaista on, että se hyödyntää siirto-objektia, eli trasitionaaliobjektia kuvan päähenkilönä, jonka kautta teemaan perehdytään. Menetelmälleni on erityistä se, että ryhmääni osallistuva kuvaaja pysyy koko ajan kameran takana ja saa päättää itse kuvaan kuuluvista symbolisista elementeistä. Kuvasta valoon -projektin aikana olen taiteilijana itse määrittänyt transitionaaliobjektiksi mallinuken jalat, jotka aseteltiin jokaiseen paikkakuvaan. Tutkimuksesnäkökulmassani perehdyn raportoimaan saamistani tuloksista työpajan aikana, suhteuttamaan omaa tutkimustani suhteessa mu…
Developmental dynamics between young adults’ life satisfaction and engagement with studies and work
2017
The present five-wave longitudinal study investigated the cross-lagged associations between young adults’ life satisfaction and study/work engagement over the transition from post-comprehensive studies to higher education or work during the second and third decades of life. Gender, educational track, academic performance and family socioeconomic status were also examined. The study is part of the longitudinal Finnish Educational Transitions (FinEdu) study, and used data from secondary education onwards, following 821 participants from age 17 to 25. The developmental dynamics showed that, in particular, young adults’ life satisfaction predicted their study/work engagement both during their p…
