Irish-Italian Studies-New Perspectives on Cultural Mobility and Permeability

2018

The volume gives new insights into aspects of Irish-Italian Cultural Studies, while offering a new cultural perspective offered by academics from different countries as well as a homage to William Butler Yeats on the 150th anniversary of his birth. Keywords: Ireland/Italy relations; literature; liminality, Irish culture and identity; translation studies. The position of Ireland – historical, as well as geographical and cultural – and the moments of change through which Ireland has passed and is passing have made it a liminal space. The legacy of the past is intersecting with the present. Traditions are questioned and future outcomes are thrown into doubt. Furthermore, physical and social mo…

Functionally-defined recurrent multi-word units in English-to-Polish translation

2022

This study uses both parallel and comparable reference corpora in the English-Polish language pair to explore how translators deal with recurrent multi-word items performing specific discoursal functions. We also consider whether the observed tendencies overlap with those found in native texts, and the extent to which the discoursal functions realised by themulti-word items under scrutiny are “preserved” in translation. Capitalizing on findings fromearlier research (Granger, 2014; Grabar & Lefer, 2015), we analyzed a pre-selected set of phrases signaling stance-taking and those functioning as textual, discourse-structuring devices originally found in the European Parliament proceedings corpus…

Comparing the Effect of Product-Based Metrics on the Translation Process

2021

Characteristics of the translation product are often used in translation process research as predictors for cognitive load, and by extension translation difficulty. In the last decade, user-activity information such as eye-tracking data has been increasingly employed as an experimental tool for that purpose. In this paper, we take a similar approach. We look for significant effects that different predictors may have on three different eye-tracking measures: First Fixation Duration (duration of first fixation on a token), Eye-Key Span (duration between first fixation on a token and the first keystroke contributing to its translation), and Total Reading Time on source tokens (sum of fixations…

Sergiusz Piaseckis Roman "Kochanek Wielkiej Niedźwiedzicy" und dessen deutsche Fassung - Versuch eines Übersetzungsvergleichs auf lexikalischer Ebene

2020

Translation ‘going social’? Challenges to the (Ivory) Tower of Babel

2010

The discussion of “turns” or “paradigmatic shifts” which we can witness in the last few years in Translation Studies undoubtedly testifies to the discipline’s increasing establishment and recognition within the scientific community and of the increasing practice of a transdisciplinary research. These shifts also include what has been called the “sociological turn”, which comprises the cluster of questions dealing not only with the networks of agents and agencies and the interplay of their power relations, but also the social discursive practices which mould the translation process and which decisively affect the strategies of a text to be translated. This paper seeks to foreground some of t…
