Using evaluation criteria and rubrics as learning tools in subtitling for the D/deaf and the hard of hearing

2018

This paper focuses on the use of evaluation criteria and rubrics as tools for training in an audiovisual translation mode: subtitling for the D/deaf and the hard of hearing (SDH). Following an introduction to the current conception of and research carried out on quality assurance and assessment both in the translation industry and academia, a brief overview of the assessment processes and instruments used in SDH university training and in the professional sector is provided. This is followed by a case study of SDH assessment practices in Spain. Two questionnaires were filled in by five service providers and 12 university trainers, and the data gathered has enabled a better understanding of …

Barbara Godard, a Translator's Portrait: Analysing the Reception of Québec's Roman au Féminin (1960-1990) in Anglophone Canada

2021

The current dissertation is not only concerned with nourishing the Feminist Translation Studies field with an interdisciplinary perspective into Feminist Translator History. It strives for an understanding of Translation Studies, and Feminist Translation Studies in this particular case, as a cross-disciplinary space where the aims of various disciplines may converge (see Castro 2012). In the particular space of Feminist Translation/Translator History, and in line with Rundle's proposed synergies between Translation Studies and History (2014), the limitations of the so-called "discursive turn" in Feminist History" (Canning 1994) which, despite showing interest in how ideologies operate via h…

Why we need TI-Oriented Language Learning and Teaching

2021

The teaching of foreign languages to students in Translation and Interpreting (TI) programmes should be framed within the field of Language for Specific Purposes (LSP). This would make it possible to pinpoint specific curricular content and methodological traits that contribute to the enhancement of the communicative competence and initial development of TI competences. This paper analyses the students’ perspectives on L2 teaching in a TI programme and how it should be undertaken to best comply with the linguistic demands imposed by translation and interpreting. A thematic analysis of 117 open questionnaires returned by students from Austria, Slovenia and Spain identified five areas to whic…

In Other Words: The Ethics of the Translator in 17th-century al-Andalus. The Perspective of Aḥmad Ibn Qāsim al-Ḥaǧarī al-Andalusī

2015

This study focuses on a particular aspect of the Translation Studies orDirāsāt al-tarǧamah, i.e. the ethics of the translator.Starting from the analysis of concepts like “cultural otherness” or “linguistic hospitality”, theorized by Antoine Berman, Lawrence Venuti and Paul Ricoeur, and concerning the translator’s process of mediating between languages and between cultures, it will be taken into account the specific case of a muslim traveller and interpreter, Aḥmad ibn Qāsim al-Ḥaǧarī al-Andalusī (d. 1051/1641), author of theKitāb Nāṣir al-dīn ʿalà l-qawm al-kāfirīn, who was asked, by a Christian authority (the Archbishop of Granada), to translate some Arabic manuscripts. In such a context, t…

Analysis of documentary and terminological needs of doctors and medical translators as a basis for the development of a next-generation multilingual …

2014

The objective of this study is to develop a multilingual lexicographical resource aimed at doctors and medi…

Latvian Translation Scene at the Turn of the 19th and 20th Century

2020

The paper looks at the Latvian translation scene at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. It is a continuation of the study of translation history in Latvia reflected in previous issues of Vertimo studijos (vol. 7, 8, 11). These decades are marked by a huge growth of translation, especially in periodicals. German was gradually losing its dominant position as a source and intermediate language, Russian was advancing, so was also the scope of other languages. In contrast to previous periods there was a particular interest in the quality of the originals and modernity. This period also saw a change of generations among translators, and women became visible in translation sc…

An LSP Framework for Translation and Interpreting Pedagogy

2021

In this article, we present a pedagogical framework for foreign language teaching in undergraduate translation and interpreting programmes. Within Translation Studies, many scholars support the idea that TILLT (Translation- and Interpreting-oriented Language Learning and Teaching) should be framed within the teaching of Languages for Specific Purposes (LSP), as students will use language as a professional tool in their professional lives. Based on insights from LSP research and practice, the area of Translation Studies dedicated to the development of language competence and expertise research, we have selected and described the key aspects for the development of professional language use in…

English translation of the Quran by women: the challenges of “gender balance” in and through language

2011

This paper aims to explore and discuss how women translators of the Quran have dealt with the patriarchal linguistic elements in the source text by focusing on two main challenges of translation. First the problem of gender agreement differences between the target and the source language. Because Arabic is highly gendered and English is not, many feminine nouns, pronouns and verbs become invisible in English and as result the “gender balance” created in original could be lost in the translation. The second challenge they face lies in the use of masculine nouns and pronouns in the generic sense, which as many feminists argued assumes generic human to be male and excludes the “human woman.” T…

Positivism on the move: translators and publishers in Mexico and Argentina (1850-1950)

2013
