Effectiveness of nonlinear optical loop mirrors in chirped fiber gratings compensated dispersion-managed transmission systems
2005
International audience; We show that nonlinear optical loop mirrors can dramatically suppress the side peaks induced by the group delay ripples in chirped fiber gratings compensated dispersion-managed systems and significantly improve the system performance.
Analysis of the new submarine interconnection system between Italy and Malta: Simulation of transmission network operation
2016
In this paper, some simulations of the interconnected Sicilian and Maltese transmission systems are performed, in order to assess this new system configuration. The HVAC submarine interconnection between Italy and Malta came into operation in 2015 and is part of a European programme for transmission grid interconnection improvement. This new line has been built in order to allow a better management of the power system of both the islands. Firstly, a brief description of the interconnection system is given. Moreover, the transmission systems of Sicily and Malta are depicted and their structures are shown. The simulations are carried out by means of a model of the interconnected system create…
Comparison of conventional and dense dispersion managed systems for 160 Gb/s transmissions
2006
International audience; In this paper, we carry out, by numerical simulations and experiments on recirculating loop.. a comparative analysis of the performances of two types of dispersion management techniques for 160 Gb/s transmission systems, which correspond to short-period dispersion maps (dense dispersion management) and long-period dispersion maps (conventional dispersion management), respectively. We show that the dense dispersion management system suffers performance degradation by the effects of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and fiber splicing losses, in a more dramatic manner than in the system with long-period map. We experimentally find that, at constant PMD, dense dispersi…
TCSC allocation based on line flow based equations via mixed-integer programming
2007
Summary form only given. Research effort has been given to locate the optimal locations of thyristor-controlled series capacitor (TCSC) and their initial compensation levels using mixed-integer programming (MIP). As a useful technique for combinatorial optimisation over integer and continuous variables, the MIP approach can provide robust performance as well as high computational efficiency while solving complex optimal problems. Previous work using MIP employed DC load flow model ignoring reactive power balance, power loss and transformer tap ratios. In this paper, a new planning method is developed based on recently reported line flow equations and basic linearisation of binary-continuous…
Recent Developments in Cladding-Pumped Doped Fiber Amplifiers for Telecommunications Systems
2020
This paper aims to review recent developments in the field of doped fiber-based optical amplifiers and serve as a reference for promising optical signal amplification techniques that may be useful for practical implementation in high-capacity and cost-efficient telecommunications systems. The main focus is put on different rare-earth dopant elements, double-clad fibers, and optical couplers for cladding-pumping technique. It is found that codoped double-clad fiber-based amplifiers currently have attained the main research interest and show possible application also in multichannel fiber optical transmission systems. Additionally, we have compared different free space and waveguide construct…
Multiobjective design of distributed reactive power production in a deregulated electric market
2005
Abstract Reactive flows compensation optimal design for losses reduction in MV automated distribution systems is a problem deeply studied in literature. In this paper, the design problem is formulated considering the new deregulated energy market. These new operational conditions allow the MV grid operator to consider the generation of reactive energy also as a service that can be sold to the transmission system above. In this case, the transmission system would be helped in all the working conditions in which a strong modulation of the reactive flow through the HV/MV node is required. Then, for the MV grid operator, the compensation system optimal design problem is therefore that of the se…
Optimization of wavelength division multiplexing in N×160Gbit/s terrestrial transmission systems
2005
Abstract We analyze, from an engineering viewpoint, the prospects of an exploitable upgrade of terrestrial fiber systems based on standard monomode fiber and dispersion compensating units, for future N × 160 Gbit/s transmission systems. We show that dispersion swing, average dispersion and input pulse power are the key parameters that govern the system performances. We show that whenever the dispersion swing is arranged in a symmetrical setup and the compensation ratio is optimized accordingly, one may obtain a significant improvement of the transmission performances.
Unified mapping of the dynamics of solitons in fiber-optic waveguides
2013
This thesis examines the dynamical behaviour of solitons which are affected, when entering a fiber-optic waveguide, by a slight distortion of profile as compared to the stationary profile in the guide. Our theoretical model combines the propagation equation of the electric field (Non-Linear Schrödinger Equation) and the system of equations of evolution of the physical parameters of the pulse (derived from the collective coordinates theory). We establish a general mapping which reveals an unsuspected diversity of dynamic behaviour around the stationary state of the pulse, in relation with the initial perturbation of the pulse's profile. This mapping establishes a classification of solitons i…
Economical evaluations of reactive power supply as an ancillary service offered by distributors
2006
Reactive power supply is one of the most important ancillary services in the field of transmission systems safety. In the current market assets, at international level, this service is differently regulated and sometimes with criteria that are not market driven. The present work is focused on the perspective to realise a reactive power market to which also the distributors can take part injecting reactive power into HV/MV connection bus bar. Under this hypothesis, the paper proposes a methodology to evaluate the economic convenience limits that the system operator would have buying the capacitive reactive power offered by distributors.
Comparative Analysis of Natural Gas Pipeline Interconnections
2021
The paper shows a comparison between two intervention methods for interconnecting two gas transmission pipelines within a natural gas transmission system. One intervention implies shutdown of pipelines, while the other one in-service pipelines. Each method is described in detail along with the main technological issues, as well as the related advantages and disadvantages. The technological procedures imply special working techniques such as welding or hot tapping in service pipelines.
