Transmission of Genetic Properties in Permutation Problems: Study of Lehmer Code and Inversion Table Encoding

2021

Solution encoding describes the way decision variables are represented. In the case of permutation problems, the classical encoding should ensure that there are no duplicates. During crossover operations, repairs may be carried out to correct or avoid repetitions. The use of indirect encoding aims to define bijections between the classical permutation and a different representation of the decision variables. These encodings are not sensitive to duplicates. However, they lead to a loss of genetic properties during crossbreeding. This paper proposes a study of the impact of this loss both in the space of decision variables and in that of fitness values. We consider two indirect encoding: the …

Effects of (+)-tubocurarine on [3H]acetylcholine release from the rat phrenic nerve at different stimulation frequencies and train lengths

1987

The effect of (+)-tubocurarine (TC) on the release of [3H]acetylcholine from the rat phrenic nerve-hemidiaphragm preincubated with [3H]choline was investigated at different stimulation frequencies and train lengths. At 0.5 Hz (100 pulses) TC failed to modulate the evoked acetylcholine release. A slight (30%) inhibition was observed at 1 Hz (100 pulses). Release of acetylcholine evoked at 5, 25 and 50 Hz (100 pulses) or 100 Hz (200 pulses) was markedly reduced by TC. The degree of inhibition (60%) was similar between 5 Hz and 100 Hz. A concentration of 1 mumol/l TC was a maximal effective concentration at 5 Hz whilst at all higher stimulation frequencies a 10-fold higher concentration was ne…

NO as a signalling molecule in the nervous system

2002

The discovery that nitric oxide (NO) functions as a signalling molecule in the nervous system has radically changed the concept of neural communication. Indeed, the adoption of the term nitrergic for nerves whose transmitter function depends on the release of NO or for transmission mechanisms brought about by NO (Moncada et al., 1997) emphasizes the specific characteristics of this mediator. The physical properties of NO prevent its storage in lipid-lined vesicles and metabolism by hydrolytic degradatory enzymes. Therefore, unlike established neurotransmitters, NO is synthesized on demand and is neither stored in synaptic vesicles nor released by exocytosis, but simply diffuses from nerve t…

A light and electron microscope study of spherical structures in the test cells of an ascidianCiona intestinalis L.

1984

Spherical structures in the test cells that surround the embryos of the ascidianCiona intestinalis L. (Tunicata, phylum Chordata) were studied by both light and electron microscope. Our data support the view that these structures are microorganism-like cells living in symbiosis with the test cells. Their possible role is discussed.

Evidence that ATP or a related purine is an excitatory neurotransmitter in the longitudinal muscle of mouse distal colon

2007

Background and purpose: This study analysed the contribution of the purinergic system to enteric neurotransmission in the longitudinal muscle of mouse distal colon. Experimental approach: Motor responses to exogenous ATP and to nerve stimulation in vitro were assessed as changes in isometric tension. Key results: ATP induced a concentration-dependent contraction, reduced by 4-[[4-formyl-5-hydroxy-6-methyl-3-[(phosphonooxy)methyl]-2-pyridinyl]azo]-1,3-benzene disulphonic acid (PPADS), suramin, P2Y purinoreceptor desensitisation with adenosine 5’-O-2-thiodiphosphate (ADPβS), and atropine, but unaffected by P2X purinoceptor desensitisation with α,β-methylene ATP (α,β-meATP) and by 2,2-dimethyl…

NANC inhibitory neurotransmission in mouse isolated stomach: involvement of nitric oxide, ATP and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide

2003

1. The neurotransmitters involved in NANC relaxation and their possible interactions were investigated in mouse isolated stomach, recording the motor responses as changes of endoluminal pressure from whole organ. 2. Field stimulation produced tetrodotoxin-sensitive, frequency-dependent, biphasic responses: rapid transient relaxation followed by a delayed inhibitory component. 3. The inhibitor of the synthesis of nitric oxide (NO), l-NAME, abolished the rapid relaxation and significantly reduced the slow relaxation. Apamin, blocker of Ca2+-dependent K+ channels, or ADPbetaS, which desensitises P2y purinoceptors, reduced the slow relaxation to 2-8 Hz, without affecting that to 16-32 Hz or the…

Tachykinergic neurotransmission is enhanced in duodenum from dystrophic (mdx ) mice

2005

1 Duodenal longitudinal muscle of mdx mice, an animal model for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, showed a decrease in the electrically evoked nonadrenergic, noncholinergic (NANC) inhibitory responses associated with a reduction of the participation of nitric oxide (NO). In this study, we investigated whether the impairment of NO could also lead to alterations in the NANC excitatory transmission. 2 Nerve-evoked responses consisted of an inhibitory phase followed, at the end of stimulation, by an excitatory response characterised by an increase in amplitude of the spontaneous contractions. In mdx mice, the amplitude of the nerve-evoked contractions was significantly higher than in normals. 3 N(om…

Structural modulations and phase transitions in β-eucryptite: an in-situ TEM study

1999

Beta-eucryptite as grown by the flux method has been investigated by in-situ cold- and hot-stage transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Using electron diffraction and dark-field TEM imaging, we found no evidence for the merohedral twinning that accompanies structural collapse at the β-to-α-quartz transition, suggesting a true hexagonal symmetry for the aluminosilicate framework of β-eucryptite. Selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns exhibited a variety of incommensurate structures along the three a axes with an average modulation period of about 6.5 a. These modulated structures arise from superperiodic stacking parallel to (100) of two structural units with different Li config…
