Split-Way CVTs: Parametric Analysis and Design

The thesis provides a parametric analytical method for the analysis and design of power-split continuously variable transmissions, which represent the state of the art for heavy-duty vehicles and hybrid electric cars. The functioning of any driveline is described by mean of a simple set of kinematic parameters, regardless of the constructive scheme. The calculation of the control torques remains straightforward even when both inertial effects and mechanical losses are taken into account. A simple design procedure is described and generalized in order to address any order of driveline, including multimode transmissions. The final layout is generated additively, without the need to analyze hu…

Size dependent light absorption modulation and enhanced carrier transport in germanium quantum dots devices

2015

Quantum confinement in closely packed arrays of Ge quantum dots (QDs) was studied for energy applications. In this work, we report an efficient tuning mechanism of the light harvesting and detection of Ge QDs. Thin films of SiGeO alloys, produced by rf-magnetron sputtering, were annealed at 600 degrees C in N-2 to induce precipitation of small amorphous Ge QDs into the oxide matrix. Varying the Ge content, the QD size was tailored between 2 and 4 nm, as measured by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements indicate the formation of pure SiO2, as well as the presence of a sub-stoichiometric Ge oxide shell at the QD interface. Light …

Oral health knowledge in pre-school children: a survey among parents in central Italy

2019

Background The aim of this survey was to evaluate the knowledge and awareness of parents about potential oral health risk factors and correct management of oral hygiene of their preschool children. Material and Methods The participation to the survey was proposed to all parents of 3-5 year aged children attending a kindergarten in Campobasso. A self-administered questionnaire was completed to obtain information regarding demographic and education variables, knowledge about caries and its transmission, infant feeding practice, maternal oral health during pregnancy, parents and children's oral hygiene habits and risk behaviors (e.g., sharing cutlery, tasting of baby food, nightly using of bab…

Mirror imaging of impacted and supernumerary teeth in dizygotic twins: A case report

2015

Background: Mesiodens is the most common type of supernumerary tooth found in the premaxilla. It might be discovered during the clinical examination as a casual finding on a radiograph or as the cause of an unerupted maxillary central incisor. The genetic transmission of supernumerary and impacted teeth is poorly understood. Mirror imaging in twins has been reported frequently in relation to several unilateral dental anomalies including mesiodens. This phenomenon is the appearance of an asymmetrical feature or anomaly occurring on the right side of one twin but on the left side of the other twin. The event of mesiodens mirror imaging in monozygotic twins has been described in literature. Re…

The Role of Striated Sphincter Muscle in Urethral Closure Under Stress Conditions: An Experimental Study

1987

Decisive for urethral closure under stress is an increase in intraurethral pressure. This pressure increase is significantly affected by urethral tonus, passive pressure transmission and reflex pressure transmission. Approximately half of the urethral tonus is produced by the striated sphincter muscles (Rud et al. 1981; Tanagho 1979).

Silver nanoparticles stabilized by a polyaminocyclodextrin as catalysts for the reduction of nitroaromatic compounds

2015

Abstract Silver nanoparticles stabilized by means of poly -(6- N , N -dimethyl-propylenediamino)-(6-deoxy)-β-cyclodextrin were synthesized, characterized by different techniques (UV–vis spectroscopy, Dynamic Light Scattering, High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy, Fourier-transform IR Spectroscopy) and used as catalysts for the reduction of various nitrobenzene derivatives with sodium borohydride. The nanocomposites obtained appear to have an organized structure, with a metal core surrounded by a layer-structured coating shell. Kinetic data, rationalized in terms of a modified Langmuir–Hinshelwood model, evidenced a non-linear dependence of the reaction rate on the concentration …

Control of Programmed Cell Death by Distinct Electrical Activity Patterns

2010

Electrical activity and sufficient supply with survival factors play a major role in the control of apoptosis in the developing cortex. Coherent high-frequency neuronal activity, which efficiently releases neurotrophins, is essential for the survival of immature neurons. We studied the influence of neuronal activity on apoptosis in the developing cortex. Dissociated cultures of the newborn mouse cerebral cortex were grown on multielectrode arrays to determine the activity patterns that promote neuronal survival. Cultures were transfected with a plasmid coding for a caspase-3-sensitive fluorescent protein allowing real-time analysis of caspase-3-dependent apoptosis in individual neurons. Ele…

Phospholipidosis and down-regulation of the PI3-K/PDK-1/Akt signalling pathway are vitamin E inhibitable events associated with 7-ketocholesterol-ind…

2007

International audience; Among the oxysterols accumulating in atherosclerotic plaque, 7-ketocholesterol (7KC) is a potent apoptotic inducer, which favours myelin figure formation and polar lipid accumulation. This investigation performed on U937 cells consisted in characterizing the myelin figure formation process; determining the effects of 7KC on the PI3-K/PDK-1/Akt signalling pathway; evaluating the activities of vitamin E (Vit-E) (α-tocopherol) on the formation of myelin figures and the PI3-K/PDK-1/Akt signalling pathway and assessing the effects of PI3-K inhibitors (LY-294002, 3-methyladenine) on the activity of Vit-E on cell death and polar lipid accumulation. Local spectral theory for Drazin invertible operators

2016

Abstract In this paper we investigate the transmission of some local spectral properties from a bounded linear operator R, as SVEP, Dunford property (C), and property (β), to its Drazin inverse S, when this does exist.
