Ridge-enhanced optical transmission through a continuous metal film

Optical transmission through a continuous (without holes) metal film with a periodic structure of metal or dielectric ridges on one or both interfaces was numerically studied. The dependencies of the transmission on the ridge width and height as well as the ridge arrangements on the opposite interfaces were investigated in weak- and strong-coupling regimes. The transmission enhancement was shown to depend on the relative position of the ridge gratings on the opposite interfaces of a film, confirming the role of resonant tunneling processes involving states of the surface polariton Bloch modes.
Quantifying the limits of transition state theory in enzymatic catalysis

Significance Transition state theory (TST) is the most popular theory to calculate the rates of enzymatic reactions. However, in some cases TST could fail due to the violation of the nonrecrossing hypothesis at the transition state. In the present work we show that even for one of the most controversial enzymatic reactions—the hydride transfer catalyzed by dihydrofolate reductase—the error associated to TST represents only a minor correction to the reaction rate. Moreover, this error is actually larger for the reaction in solution than in the enzymatic active site. Polymeric drug delivery micelle-like nanocarriers for pulmonary administration of beclomethasone dipropionate

In this paper, the potential of novel polymeric micelles as drug delivery systems for Beclomethasone Dipropionate (BDP) administration into the lung is investigated. These nanostructures are obtained starting from α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-D,L-aspartamide (PHEA), which was subsequently functionalized with O-(2-aminoethyl)-Oâ-methylpolyethylenglycole (PEG2000), ethylenediamine (EDA) and lipoic acid (LA), obtaining PHEA-PEG2000-EDA-LA graft copolymer. Enhanced Thermal Stability of Gold and Silver Nanorods by Thin Surface Layers

Using in situ transmission electron microscopy, we find that a carbon shell governs the morphological transitions of gold and silver nanorods upon heating. Encapsulated Ag nanorods show a surprising nonuniform sublimation behavior starting from one side and leaving behind the shell. Uncovered gold nanorods transform their shape to spheres well below the bulk melting temperature through surface diffusion, which is prevented by a thin carbon shell.
Diffusion-Driven Formation of MoS2 Nanotube Bundles Containing MoS2 Nanopods

MoS2 nanotube bundles, along with embedded nested fullerenes, were formed in a gas-phase reaction of molybdenum carbonyl and H2S gas with the assistance of I2. The amorphous Mo-S-I precursor particles obtained by quenching a modified metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) reaction in a large temperature gradient were annealed at elevated temperature in an inert atmosphere. Under the influence of the iodine, the amorphous precursor formed a surface film with an enhanced mobility of the molybdenum and sulfur components. Competition between surface reaction and diffusion of gold deposited onto ZrTe3

Abstract Surface reaction and diffusion of gold, deposited onto the (0 0 1) ZrTe 3 van der Waals (vdW) surface, is studied by transmission electron and scanning tunneling microscopy. It is shown that both processes compete at temperatures as low as room temperature. In case of diffusion the deposited gold mostly disappears from the surface and intercalates into the vdW gaps of the substrate. Residual unreacted gold agglomerates are rather mobile and are often displaced by the scanning tip along the [1 0 0] direction of the substrate. During the last three months, COVID- 19 pandemic had led to a serious backlog of operations globally, and plans for restarting operation are imperative. Recommendations for surgical activities were studied, aiming to protect the surgical staff from being infected. In the meantime, it is also important to give attention to the surgeon’s personal feeling during work. We conducted a survey to investigate global surgi- cal practices during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the surgeon’s personal feeling was also investigated in the sur- vey. In this special letter, we performed multivariate analysis to explore factors that associated with surgeon’s fear of getting infected by COVID-19.

The square of ultrasound transmission velocity in a material is correlated to the modulus of elasticity, which is an indicator of its mechanical properties. This might make the measurement of ultrasound transmission velocity useful in the noninvasive diagnosis of bone diseases. Synaptic bodies (SBs) are dynamic synaptic organelles of afferent synapses of the retina, inner ear, lateral line organ and pineal gland in vertebrates. When investigated in a transmission electron microscope, their electron-dense rod-like, round or irregular profiles are surrounded by electron-lucent vesicles. The three-dimensional structure of pineal SBs is not precisely known.
